Diawa Silvercast

I personally use the Diawa Goldcast for my spin fishing rods. However, the Diawa Silvercast reels, coupled with a pistol grip rod is ideal for my grandchildren, nephews and nieces ages 5 through 8 years with their beginning fishing adventures. The pistol grip style rod helps with their aim in those pesky beaver ponds with some snags sticking out of the water. The Silvercast has an easy drag for them to remedy those situations where they have too much or too little drag, and a smooth running ball bearing system for smooth, easy retrieves. The Silvercast is much, much better and smoother than similar reels of other brands - and believe me, we have tried them all. Well worth it for a beginning and intermediate fisherman or girl for trout and panfish, once they outgrow their Snoopy poles !!

Great Reel

I was sick of cheep reels on my boys poles. This reel is smooth. The Diawa Silvercast is easy to reel in and is easy to cast out far to catch the big one. My older son loved it so much, I bought a second for my younger son. My younger son is left handed. Easy fix. Just unscrew arm and move to other side! Awesome reel!

Nice reel

Bought this for my wife to fish for hybrids. Seems very well made, good heavy reel. Can't waite to see her catch a fish with it.

Negative Reviews:

Not a great reel

Reel will perform well out of the box, does a good job of casting light weight lures and does ok with medium lures. After one summer of medium time fishing it breaks down and by the second summer it is no longer working. I guess from reading other posts in other areas this seems to hold true to these reels. So, it depends on what you are looking for but do not expect this reel to hold up for a long period of time.
