David Miller AWOL On The Appalachian Trail -

In 2003 David Miller, aka AWOL hiked the 2170 mile Appalachian Trail. This is his story and it's a good one. This is a very detailed account of AWOL's hike and the people he meets along the way. There is a wry, dry humor that will make you chuckle and a disarming honesty that will make you smile. This book is sure to become a favorite among long distance readers and hikers. This is a well written book that shows David's love for the trail and his craftsmanship with words.

David Miller AWOL On The Appalachian Trail Reviews:

One of my favorite AT books

This is a great account of a trail hike from someone who doesn't fit the typical mold of a thru-hiker, that being someone in mid-career with a family. I relate to his situation but lack the inspiration to do the hike at this point in my life.
He touches on why he took the hiatus from his career, and how he dealt with missing his family (and his family missing him). He does cover the usual hiker story of sights along the trail, history of the trail and various areas it traverses, strange charachters he met, dealing with bad weather, and the numerous health ailments that occur during an extended trip.

Almost a Frommer's for the AT

An easy to read and understand step-by-step travelogue of the AT. From the terrain, the views, wildlife, and crazy characters this book covers it all.

Absorbing book

I read lots of books on the Appalachian Trail. This book brought back memories of our 2000 hike from GA to ME.
