Great product. Installation is key

We have this on each of our 2 sailboats. With 15 years of service between the 2. No failures due to product design.

The set screw fits into a groove on the windex base. It is very easy to screw the set screw and miss the groove. If you do not set it right, the windex will fall off in strong wind. If you get the screw in the groove, it will survive all reasonable wind conditions. Has survived many 40+mph blows on our boats.

It is not strong enough to survive if a large bird decides to sit on it. There is an optional spike that should help with this.

Excellent Product

I use the Windex 15 for my 25-foot sailboat, attaching it atop the mast. In addition to its accurate indication of wind direction, I'm also pleased with the metal spire that towers above the indicator and discourages birds from trying to land up there while the boat's in its slip. Having used Windex indicators for some 25 years, I find them to be very reliable and long-lasting. I highly recommend Windex indicators, and I'm enjoying this 15-inch version because of it's increased visibility above my 34-foot mast.

Just One Problem

The Windex Wind Indicators by Davis Instruments is an excellent product that I have used on my boats for over 15 years. However, this time I had trouble lining up the threading on the wind vane with the post. It did finally work.

Good Wind Indicator, cheap base

This is a great wind indicator for sailboats up to 25 feet. Installation was easy (replacing same model lost in trailering). The plastic mounting base tends to crack when the set-screw is tightened, but a little glue can work around this.

The Windex 10 Windvane is ...

The Windex 10 Windvane is ideal for my 26 foot sailboat. It clearly shows apparent wind direction and is an ideal tool that helps you tune your boat to maintain the maximum profile in any wind condition or direction.

wouldn't be without

Have one on both of my current sailboats. It gives a quick wind direction reference. As a relative beginner, it makes finding the wind and setting your point af sail a "breeze".

Would buy again

Accurate wind direction indicator when placed at top of mast on an aftward extension so as not to be visually blocked by the mast.

A very good wind indicator

An inexpensive wind indicator that is very useful for inland lake day sailing.

The best wind indicator for a small boat
25 feet.

Perfect size Windex for my Catalina 22.

Great in very light air. One very sensitive indicator.

Mounting problem

The mounting is of poor design. It uses a set screw to hold the unit into the base. It cautions to not tighten the set screw to tight otherwise it will crack the plastic base. I installed per instructions using lock tight. In the first 40knt wind the unit flew off. I was told at the store "yea, that happens". I epoxy'd my replacement together to avoid a repeat.

They eventually break

I am having to replace a Windex 15 where the entire rear end broke off, rendering it completely useless and swiveling around aimlessly. I am suspecting the plastic eventually became brittle due to sun exposure. For this amount of money I expect a unit that will last indefinitely. Do you want to be dropping your mast to replace something like this?
