Add 3-1/8 inches easily and cheaply.
The amount of rise is adjustable within a range of about 2-1/4 inches to about 3-1/8 inches. The packaging says it will raise the stem up to 3-1/2 inches, but I think that is a mistake (maybe add spacers?).
This extender also moves the handlebars slightly closer to the seat (due to the head tube angle). On my bike it is about 1/2 inch closer when set to the maximum rise.
Installation will affect the adjustment of the headset bearings, so follow the installation instruction sequence carefully to avoid problems. The front brake cable on my bike was just barely long enough so that I did not have to change it to another one. Installation was not especially difficult. Your front wheel should be on the ground when you remove the stem or the fork could fall out of the head tube. The hardest part was getting the handlebars in perfect alignment with the wheel again. You will need two different sizes of allen wrench, and maybe a third to fit your stem, and one must be long enough to reach through the extender.
I am tall and leggy, and I have to raise the seatpost quite high even on larger frame sizes. This usually puts the handlebars too low for comfort for me. This product has improved the fit of my bike significantly. My handlebars are now about level or slightly higher than my seat. I can ride without my hands going numb and I get less muscular tension in my shoulders. Riding is more enjoyable now. If your handlebars are already level with your seat, adding this will give you a more upright position like with a comfort bike. It can be transferred easily to your next mountain bike.
Matches Novara Safari
I had ordered the Novara Safari touring Bicycle after much research online, and at local bike shops. The bicycle was 99% of what I was looking for, perfect in all aspects but one. Handlebar height. All reviews I have seen mention this fact on every size frame of the Safari.
Due to the thread-less stem design, there was no way to adjust this problem, so a riser was the only way to correct it.
The Delta Thread-less Stem Riser is a perfect match for the Safari, and without any adjustment of the gear or brake cables, I was able to install this item and raise the bars to the height I require. While the bars did move back a fraction closer to the seat, it is of no difference.
I recommend this item to anyone that purchases a Safari and needs the height of the handlebars raised without any changes to the bicycle other than loosening and re-tightening of some allen screws. From the 99% perfect bike, it is now 100% for me.
Great quality and price
I'm 6'3" in bare feet and even my 62cm Motobecane Mirage Pro road bike was causing lower back pain and neck stiffness about 45 minutes into my ride.
The problem was I was was too hunched over in the saddle when in the riding position due to the bars being too low. I was constantly also finding my elbows in a straight locked position rather than bent.
This stem extender put my bars at an ideal height for me. Install is easy but, yes, you do need a long 5mm allen wrench like a "T" handle one in order to reach the restraining bolt at the bottom of the extender for tightening.
Biking is all about comfort. If you're not comfortable even on a long ride then something isn't right and you're not prone to keep at it.
I would definitely recommend this produce and REI's price was the lowest I could find.
For most of us as we get older the riding position aboard a mountain bike needs to be a bit more upright in order to avoid neuropathy in the hands, cricked necks and low back discomfort. This stem riser straightens you up just enough to make things more comfortable without rendering the bike unuseable for off-road travel. It does not require installation of new cables. You get a lot for just a little bit of money.
I installed these on both my wife's and my own mountain bikes just a couple of weeks ago and now we're spending more time riding. Imagine that!
5 stars all the way. Good idea, good design, quality product, simple to install and affordable.
Works for me.
alternative to new stem and handlebars
like some other reviews i enjoy my bike except for the handlebar height. on my bike, the delta stem extender raised my handlebars a tad over 2 inches.
this small difference made my riding comfort much better. itsaved a stem-o-rama test and new handlebar purchase. my elbows, wrists and back feel better and my bike has better handling characteristics (2009 rocky mountain metropolis).
somehow the more upright position feels better taking off from stops as well.
some configurations may need spacers to properly secure the stem extension. in my case, i had a stem cap light mount that need to be palced on another part of my bike but this didnt turn out to be a problem.
Does Its Job
I commute to work almost every day on a mountain bike and I always wished my handlebars were just a tad higher to take some pressure off of my wrists, arms and back and so I could sit a little more upright in the saddle. I was looking at changing out the stem but I saw this Delta stem raiser and figured I would give it a try. It was very easy to install and it does exactly what I hoped it would. Now my commute is much more comfortable! It looks a bit odd the first few times you look at your bike, but I will sacrifice looks for comfort.
Back and shoulder pain disappears
After riding my new touring bike for over a year averaging 100+ miles weekly, I began to develop pain between my shoulder blades with occasional numbness in my lower arms and hands. I wanted to raise my handlebars up to relieve pressure on my back/shoulders, but the threadless type stem didn't allow for any more height. I discovered the Delta riser at REIs website and then rode my bike out to Redmond, WA store, purchased and mounted it at the store. I set it up so the handlebar was level with my saddle. On my 16 mile ride back home, pain/pressure disappeared immediately. Highly recommend it.
I cycle 210 K per week mostly on paved bike paths. I have had spinal fusion at several locations so I am no all that flexible. I have to ride in a more upright position and this allows almost any modern bike to be modified so a more upright position is possible. No complaints, I have installed it on road, mountain, and city bikes. If the stem matches it will fit but you may have to make all the cables that are routed to the handlebars longer. This is a somewhat more difficult job that installing this riser.
This product worked great on my mountain bike(now commuter bike). I try to commute to work 3 times a week so extrat height on my handle bars made a big difference. At first, I thought the stem riser would make my bike look "silly." However, since it's all black I couldn't notice a difference. The only issue with this product was on the install. It should have been simple, however some reason I needed an extact spacer to ensure a solid fit. After I had a bike shop install the stem riser correctly I had no issues.
Simple fix to raise handlebars
I purchased this stem raiser for my wife's bike. She was having problems with pain in her wrist and neck after long rides. This adapter brought the handlebars up enough to eliminate her discomfort.
The riser is fairly easy to install. I did run into a problem with the shoulder of the supplied Allen head screw bottoming out on the Star nut before taking up the slack in the stem. An additional 5mm spacer was added to raise the assembly up enough to keep the screw from binding.
