Deuter Lite 40+10 Reviews:

Positive Reviews:

I had a Deuter ACT 50+10 for years and traveled with it all over BUT I carried a daypack jammed into the 50+10 and threw the whole assembly into a duffel at the airport and checked the pack.
I ditched the daypack and duffel to carry just one pack with me; the ACT 40+10. I use a foam insert for my camera gear (a Nikon DSLR and a couple lenses). This way I carry it all on the airplane with me. The 40+10 fits into overhead compartments when you do not extend the pack.
I strip out the camera gear insert when boarding and the pack looks like a daypack and I am carrying a handled foam box.
The 40+10 is that perfect crossover size, fit and comfortable - small enough to carry as a daypack, small enough to fit in overhead compartments, comfortable enough to carry in the tropics loaded with 30lbs (I rarely carry more than 18 pounds). I carry it on trains, buses, tuk-tuks and of course, my back.
The only thing I question is the long term durability of the stretch fabric. I try not to use the back pocket because of that. Oh, and that I had to locate a suitable silicon nylon rain cover. They should include a cover for a pack that works so well in the tropics.
Lastly, I am 50, 6' and 210 and this pack ( and the other Deuters I own) is a truly comfortable pack for all sizes. They figured out the suspension system that works for nearly any back length or body. My wife, who was using my 50+10 has now picked up one of these AND my son wanted his own new 50+10 (he will check his)! I have a lot of backpacks in my usage collection, from daypacks to my Bora 80 and Lowe SAR pack - and this pack wins, hands down for everything from a daytrip to overnight to, well, a three week trek in SE Asia. Expect to see it on the Camino Santiago in the near future!

Durable, comfortable, and great design

I initially bought one of these for work. I drive buses for Metro, and needed something to carry around work required materials, two liters of water, lunch (with ice packs), plus some minimal first aid and other supplies. And a collapsable contact staff to play with during breaks; the design of the inner pocket accomodates something that long! And I needed something I could strap a portable seat cushion to. Even with as much as I carry on a daily basis, with the seat cushion strapped on the back, this backpack still balances very well ergonomically. The straps are very adjustable for many body styles and sizes, and well padded. I liked it so much, I bought a second one a year later for non-work purposes. I've packed it full for overnight trips, including strapping a mattress pad and tent onto it using the cinch straps, and stuffing a sleeping bag inside. Not a single tear on either pack, nor a single problem with the zippers. The mesh in the back even holds up to my cat scratching on it if I leave it on the ground too long. Easily the best backpack I've ever purchased.

Awesome Product

I am a young adventurer. I bought this product a few months ago to use as my overnight pack at a hiking camp I attended over the summer. I am tall and skinny and this pack fit me just right. It was very comfortable to wear and didn't chafe at all. I used it for everything from shorter day hikes to four day extended trips. I was able to fit all my gear in easily without any problems. The water bottle pockets could easily fit a nalgene and even more. The pack held up wonderfully through its heavy use. It's red color may be a bit duller but otherwise everything still works perfectly! The only thing I wish it came with was a built in rain cover, but one can be easily purchased from REI. This pack is perfect for anyone who is too skinny for other packs and is looking for a solid pack.

great pack, but it's a little too small

We set out to get a pack for my 12yo son for a weekend backpacking trip, but keeping in mind future trips including a week long trip to New Mexico with the scouts in a couple years! For the weekend, I split our gear, mostly food and cooking equip between myself, my 12yo, and my 8yo...keeping the 8yo pretty light. I took the brunt of the load, but even so the 12yo's pack was LOADED! And this was only for a weekend and we packed pretty sparingly! I had an 80L pack and I was very loaded, but it fit what we needed much better than the 50L. In hind site, we should have gone with a bigger pack...probably the 80L. I was less than thrilled about the tie on points. I was much happier about tying onto my external frame pack. Much easier.

Big Pack in a Small Packge

Have hiked with this pack on the AT for 628 winter miles so far. It can carry enough gear to operate down to zero F with five days food. It's a profoundly comfortable pack to carry with ample room for essential gear, but no extras. Compartments facilitate organization. Has only one hip belt pocket into which you cannot see while wearing the pack. Needs more, larger and better pocket placement on hip belt and outside of pack. This pack leaks like a seive even with a rain cover on. Seam sealing and water resistant zippers would be a huge improvement. The buckles and keepers need tabs that would enable them to be enable them to be operated while wearing gloves or mittens.

This Pack Rocks

Started out wanting to downsize from a 55 liter to 40 liter pack for our 3-4 day trips. Didn't like the Osprey and Gregory options for ventilated packs that move the weight way too far off your back and make the load unstable. Dueter has a nice option where they allow for enough ventilation while keeping the load closer to your back in a more stable place. Love having a smaller lighter pack. Not as many access points...but it is a balance of benefits.

Lots of adjustability

Great adjustability. I'm 6'2", 165 pounds and I had to return my other pack for this one because I couldn't cinch it tight enough around my hips. This one has enough adjustability for me and even more in case I ever get skinnier :)

Only con is that it's only available in red and black. Black is too hot and red is not the greatest color, but function over fashion, I guess....

Packing the Milky Way

My wife and I each had the same pack and used it for the first time on the Camino de Santiago in Spain. Very versitile, but needed to constantly adjust the straps. Worked great with our Osprey water unit. Lots of places to store and attach stuff. Easy access to bottom of the pack. Also, easliy stowss in airplane overhead luggage compartment.

Daypack for Kilimanjaro

Used as a day pack for Kilimanjaro. Usually most backpacks hurt my back, but not this one! Was adjustable, easy to throw on your back and stable. Used it hiking 7-8 hours a day and barely felt it on - even though I have 4 liters of waters and heavy camera equipment.

Perfect for any day hike or extended adventure.

ACT Lite 40 + 10

Let me start by saying that I am a minimalist. For my purposes this pack is perfect, I can fit all I need for a weeks long treck in the woods. If you like to bring equipment and clothing that you don't need, then this pack may not be large enough for you. Good job Deuter the pack is lightweight, cool and comfortable

Neutral Reviews:

I got this pack and used if for about two weeks and ultimately returned it. It is really easy to adjust the shoulder straps to match your torso length and after you get over the weirdness of how the shoulders feel it works really well. The waist belt is super beefy for the size of the pack and makes the load feel really secure. I ended up returning it because it was not sturdy enough for my taste. I noticed that the straps to hold down the lid were stretching at the stitching where the webbing meets the lid (it seems to be some sort of synthetic leather). Additionally I was tightening one of the side straps and the clasp snapped. The only way to fix it would be to cut it off and sew on a new one.
I ended up getting the Osprey Exos 46 which is lighter and seems more durable even with smaller straps.
