As cycling technology continues to evolve, shoes are now becoming included in the trickle-down effect that we've seen with hard goods over the past decade. This is good news, as the materials and designs we see on pro racers' feet have become available to us, and more importantly, at prices that're manageable to swallow. Take, for example, Diadora's new Speed Racer 2 Carbon Shoes. Diadora built the shoes around its top-end last using lightweight breathable upper materials. It then mated this to an ultra-stiff full-carbon outsole, and threw in a closure system that lets you dial in the perfect fit. It sounds fairly simple, but in doing so, Diadora created an affordable, race-ready package that blends the most important 'pro' qualities that we look for into a single pair of shoes.
For the shoes' upper, Diadora built the Speed Racer 2 Carbon Shoes around its Shape Race last. This last shape forms precisely to your foot, combining just the right amount of arch support with forefoot and midfoot hold. Additionally, this design lends itself to securing heel retention as well. This comfortable cradle on the foot is achieved using Diadora's Suprell-Tech and Morpho Cage design. Essentially, this is a leather/polyurethane and lightweight mesh 'space frame' construction that's been designed to support pedaling motions with its ultra-stable and breathable composition. At the heel cup, Diadora designed the Speed Racer 2 to perfectly contain the rider's foot in its seat by armoring the delicate Achilles tendon with a two-part composition. For structural rigidity, the pre-molded thermoplastic polyurethane heel cup uses a firm composite around the back, with softer and more flexible plastics along the sides.
The closure system incorporates three separate straps that each perform specific retention functions. Across the forefoot, Diadora added its V-Fit hook-and-loop strap that allows you to easily control the volume over the forefoot. Moving up from that is the dual-ring 'Double Speedlace' strap. This is also a hook-and-loop strap, but you receive two options for customizable midfoot retention. If your feet are narrow and you have a low arch, use the second ring. Do you have wide feet with a high instep? Take the first ring. In either case, you'll be able to get a supportive and comfortable fit that matches your individual foot shape. At the top of the closure, Diadora added its reliable Four Points buckle closure. This durable buckle was manufactured with an aluminum chassis and a large release button that's attached to a strap with four different adjustment positions. Combined with the two lower straps, this EVA-backed top strap provides you with the ultimate customizable retention and support.
Diadora chose to mate the Speed Racer 2 upper to its Carbon G Technology sole. This full-carbon platform incorporates its new Power Flow Breathability System. Essentially, this is a ventilated design that allows the maximum change of air within the shoe when perspiration and heat buildup are at their worst. In addition to the airflow properties achieved with this sole, the design also keeps stack height and weight to a minimum, while maintaining a high level of rigidity for a direct transmission of power to the pedals.
The heel pad is made of a firm replaceable rubber compound known as Duratech, which provides excellent surface grip and high abrasion resistance. Hi-Vent insoles complete the Speed Racer Shoes, giving you maximum support, ventilation, and comfort in all weather conditions.
The Diadora Speed Racer 2 Carbon Shoes are available in odd and even sizes ranging from 37.0 to 47.0 and in the color Anthracite/white.
