Diamondback Mason Comp Bike -
Diamondback Mason Comp Bike 2014.
As 29er bikes become more prevelant, bike companies continue to push the envelope with new designs for the 29er market. Located in the Pacific Northwest, Diamondback needed a 29inch offering that was a bit more capable of handling local terrain that can often be aggressive if not also wet and muddy. Enter the Mason Pro All Mountain hardtail. This rig is slack and low slung—meant for today’s shredder who wants efficiency on the pedal uphill but also the freedom to charge down the other side with aggressiveness.
The Mason Pro features an All Mountain 6061-T6 Weapons Grade Aluminum frame with a formed top tube, a formed and butted down tube, a tapered head tube, a direct mount front derailleur mount, ISCG tabs and a 142×12mm Maxle drop out.
Loading up the front end is a ROCKSHOX Sektor 29 Gold fork with 140 mm of travel, a 15mm Maxle, Solo Air, external rebound adj. w/turnkey lockout, magnesium lowers, and an alloy 1.5 tapered steerer tube. This also lends to a slack, 66.5 degree head angle. Combine this with 433mm/ 17.05" long chain stays and you can clearly see where this is going. This keeps the bike maneuverable, easy to manipulate in downhill and aired out sections, and easier to get the front end of the bike up with the slack head angle. Because the long travel fork lifts the front end of the bike up pretty high, Diamondback designed a formed, low top tube for better clearance over the bike.
32h AM290 29” double wall disc specific rims are laced to sealed cartridge bearing hubs and SRAM Maxle QR for a stout yet light weight wheelset. Some benefits of a 29” wheel include:
The drivetrain is dialed with a RACEFACE Ride w/ NEW Narrow-Wide 32t single ring 10 spd crankset and a Raceface outboard bearing bottom bracket. Combine this with a SRAM X-7 Short Cage 10spd rear derailleur, X-5 trigger shifter, and a SRAM PG-1030 10spd Cassette (11-36t) and you have a minimalist approach with a variety of options to get you up the hill with ease. AVID Elixir 1 Hydraulic Disc brakes with 180mm front & 160mm rear G2 rotors offer more than enough power to stop when and where you see fit. Diamondback made sure the cockpit was ready to roll with the customized DB 6061 Aluminum 3D forged stem with Raceface Ride 710mm Handlebars, a 30.9mm Crank Brothers Kronolog Dropper post, and the DB MASON Signature saddle.

  • Surface Contact – 29”wheels are less prone to sinking in soft material such as sand and mud due to the larger contact patch causing lower ground pressure. The longer contact patch increases cornering and straight line traction.

  • Taller Riders – 29" bikes tend to offer taller riders a more “natural” frame geometry.
  • 6061-T6 weapons-grade aluminum frame boasts an array of formed and butted-and-formed tubes along with a tapered head tube to deliver a strong, stiff and responsive ride

  • Tire Clearance – with more tire choices than any platform, the 29”wheel easily accommodates off road as well as commuting tires.
  • 140mm-travel Rock Shock Sektor Gold fork includes a tapered steerer, magnesium lowers and a 15mm thru axle for precision; lockout and rebound offer easy adjustment
  • Specs on the Diamondback Mason 29er hardtail mountain bike are subject to change
  • Angle of Attack – Larger wheels decrease your angle of attack by allowing you to roll over obstacles easier and faster. Bigger wheel = smaller obstacle.
  • Momentum – A larger wheel enables one to carry momentum easier though obstacles.
  • Stability – The relative position of the bottom bracket/cranks to the axles in the wheels also means that your relative center of gravity is lower. This results in a feeling of riding “in” the bike rather than on top of it.
  • SRAM X5 shifter guides the SRAM X5 rear derailleur quickly and precisely through the 10 gears
  • Diamondback AM290 rims spin smoothly around sealed cartridge bearing hubs and are wrapped with Kenda Nevegal 29 x 2.2 (front) and Slant 29 x 2 (rear) tires
  • RaceFace Respond single-ringed crankset with MRP chain guide is paired with 10-speed, 11-36t cassette for good all-around gearing; ISCG 05 tabs make an upgrade easy
  • Slack 66.5° head tube angle offers stable, confidence-inspiring handling on aggressive trails; 16.77 in. long chainstays make it easier to get the front up over obstacles
  • Avid Elixir 5 hydraulic disc brakes deliver responsive braking thanks to a 180mm rotor up front and 160mm rotor in the back
