Awesome all around hat
Gave it 5 because you could take this thing anywhere and it would hold its own (well except for cocktail or formal wear)
Well I used a Cypress Hill style bucket hat for normal hiking, but the sun nabs my neck sometimes.
So I wanted a hat with a wider brim. I loved the Tilly one, but too expensive. And the Aussie Oilskin one got consideration, but no strap in case the wind goes nuts. I was considering the REI explorer vented but I noticed in rain, it'd be like wearing nothing, so I got this one.
I like my hats loose, because I'm a head sweat-er so I can fit a head band or a do rag, something to catch it before it hits me my eyes and glasses. So the large was a bit loose on my head, but its good.
Price could be in the 20 range (and this would sell like hotcakes) but for what I got it, its worth it.
I works great in heated conditions, but it doesn't have ventilation like the REI explorer vented, so if its really hot. The plus side is it does have two small round vents and it can keep water off you. Which I want in a hat for places with quick weather changes *cough* Mt Whitney *cough*
It's a leather hat, so when it got wet the leather felt sticky, but dried fine. I tried out in drizzle at SD's famous Cowles (mini) mountain and worked fine.
Not only that, its its pretty tough, someone sat on it and the top can be smoothed back to normal. There is a wire on the brim, so you can adjust it, a nice touch.
I tested it out on a long hike up at San Gorgonio, it was very hot in the beginning of the hike but as we got closer to the the peak it got cold, and my head was warm. The hat worked great.
The main cons is it doesn't have mini compartments inside near the top or a band to tuck things in or one of those modular hats, excessive water / rain or in constant desert heat, you'd definitely want something more specialized, and its not as fashion cool as the Aussie oilskin hat. It also doesn't soak up any sweat so if you're sweating it'll wet your hair, run down your face.
But this is an all around hat in all aspects of wet, cold, sun / heat.
Not only that is everyone kept complimenting it. This girl called me Indiana Jones. Great hat I'd get another one next year just cuz its good to have two of a good thing.
In closing this is all around for weather (hot sunny, or cold, rain). It does not excel as specific type headwear (like vented ones for desert or triathlete bill caps with neck flaps). Very stylish and cool. Rugged and price is bit high but worth it overall.

awesome hat!
I just got this hat last week. Already it's kept me warm, kept the sun off, and seems to have some sort of forcefield to keep the rain away. The brim has a wire in it so you can shape it however you want. I guess that the down side to that is that if you toss it in a corner you need to re-shape it. But this really is a great hat that I can see wearing for many years to come. And I've already gotten a lot of compliments on how nice it looks.

Love this hat!
Looks like leather but it's not. Brim can be shaped, has chin strap to keep it on in high winds and keeps sun and rain off! I have had it for two years and periodically apply mink oil to help with the waterproofing, never have had a wet head! Keeps snow off (I wear glasses so hiking with snow falling in, on and around my glasses is annoying) and because it's some kind of cotton/canvas it's fine in the summer months! I love this hat!
