Eagle Creek No Matter What Flashpoint Duffel Reviews:

Full Carryon Size. Trolley Slot.

Eagle Creek duffels are thoughtfully designed and well-assembled out of first-rate, but light, materials. Has handy outside flat zippered pocket, and a trolley handle pass-through on the other side. Compression straps; no Velcro to rip your clothes on the handle wrap - it uses snaps.

This one is Medium, and is maximum carry-on size. So don't mount it on a wheelie (it has a slot, a panel on the back for carrying on a wheelie) and expect to pass muster at strict ticket counters and gates.

They make a Small one which is more suitable as an accessory bag ("personal item," in carry-on parlance), and the Small version also has the wheelie mounting panel.

This Medium version is perfect if you are bumping against a carryon weight limit, like the 15.4 pound limit on most Asian carriers. When you have a weight limit like that, you don't want to waste 7 or 8 of your precious carry-on pounds on the bag itself. Hence, the utility of this duffel. It is lightweight, since it has no heavy "frame" like a wheelie.

On the other hand, the lack of wheels means you'd better be hale enough to carry it.

I packed mine full of clothes, and it was pretty heavy even going downstairs to the shuttle (I was using it as a checked bag that trip). Remember that a puffy winter jacket doesn't weigh much, but tightly rolled jeans and other dense clothing quickly add up.

The bag is made of sturdy, but thin, material. Thus in its original package, it will fit in your other luggage with ease, to use as an overflow bag when flying home. BUT once you unpack it, it's unlikely you will ever fold it up as neatly as it was shipped. I just lay it out in my other bag like a liner, instead of trying to fold it into a tidy square. The weight and bulk of the clothing on top of it flattens it out nicely (and efficiently).

This comes in basic black; but I bought it in burnt orange so I could spot it on the luggage carousel.

I have the Small one as well, and use it as my personal bag with a wheelie sometimes. A testy ticket counter agent threatened me with a "second carry on luggage" fee one time - but most times the Small will pass muster in lieu of a small backpack.

REI has these on display at the end of the counter, making it much easier to get a feel for which size works better for you.

The shoulder straps on each are grippy, comfortable, and lightweight and not bulky.

As a traveler who often makes trade-offs based on weight, bulk, and perceived durability, I think Eagle Creek did a fine job here.

Premium priced. REI's own line is plainer, less functional, but a lot cheaper.

Perfect Duffel

I traveled all around Europe for almost three weeks with this. It's perfect for a long trip if you pack fairly light. It's definitely the most durable bag I've had. Lightweight, and really good zippers. It's also nice because it will slide over standard roller luggage, so I was able to slide it over my wife's luggage and roll it around (that way she didn't have to carry anything).

Great duffel, great price!

I used this bag on a supported bike/camp trip. I also used it as my carry-on on the plane. It kept my gear dry during a torrential downpour while camping, and held more than I expected. It transported well with all the other gear in the truck, sustaining no tears or injury. This is a great all purpose bag.

One tough duffel

I used this bag because of weight limitations and the need for a bag that would be durable as it was moved from vehicles and airplanes. It held up to some pretty tough conditions. It's dirty, but intact now. It is a very well constructed duffel that held two weeks work of gear that I needed for my trip.

Just right!

I have several, one is for general travel, the others are used to keep gear organized and ready for travel. (One has my sailing gear, another for fly fishing). They last, and last. Only draw back is that the kids keep wanting to borrow them.
