Eastern Mountain Sports Thunderhead Jacket Reviews:

Keeping Sandy Away

I got this as a waterproof shell over my clothes for hiking/camping after a 6-hour hike in Iceland where it rained steadily for the last 3 hours and I got destroyed in my yellow poncho. Haven't gotten to use it while in the woods yet, but I used it during Hurricane Sandy and I walked around outside the day the storm was coming in. It took a consistent beating of wind and rain over the course of a few hours and when I got back to my apartment, my upper body was totally dry. The hood also has adjustable straps so I was able to tighten it over my head just right, so that the wind couldn't blow into it and create an air pocket around my head (as happens with nonadjustable hoods). Even with the hood in-place, I could still pivot my head normally to see around me. All the water beaded and there was no seepage. Plus it kept me somewhat warm by really doing a good job keeping the wind out and retaining some of my body heat.

At the same time, there are some cons. Just as it does a good job retaining heat, that's because it doesn't breath at all, its a solid shell, so if you begin to sweat, the inside of the jacket literally develops condensation which, unless wiped away or unless you're also wearing non-absorbent materials, could result in clothing taking on moisture and cooling you down. This really is not a winter jacket at all, and while you could technically wear it in a snow environment, you'd have to have serious layers underneath. I'd only really recommend it for 3 seasons as it also does not have a snow skirt. Also, if you don't want the hood out, there really isn't a good way to fold it down and secure it inside the jacket. There's a velcro strap that allows you to keep the hood in-place along the collar, but that makes the contours of the jacket awkward and lets air enter through the neck area, so I'd recommend just keeping the hood out at all times. I also have not yet figured out how to pack the jacket into itself for easy storage in a hiking backpack, as I believe you're supposed to be able to do that this with jacket.

My new favorite rain jacket

I took this to Scotland with me. I carried it every day. Some days I didn't need it, and it packed up and stored in my backpack very well. Some days I needed it for the wind, others for rain. Indispensable equipment.

Better ones would cost 2X or more.

I am really tempted to buy another color but my wife says I have too many jackets already. I may have to give away my older ones.

Excellent jacket

Great jacket--I use it primarily for a shell while running in rainy (and/or windy) weather. Good breathability, and the easy to adjust hood and collars work well.

Perfect for College

This is the second one I have purchased. Now each of my sons has one for college. Perfect for stuffing into a back pack.
