Bring back Compass Pant!

Compared to the Compass Pant this doesn't cut it....not even close. While I like the fabric of the Trailhead...since it's not as shiny or noisy as the Compass Pant....there are several things lacking. First, the pockets are pretty useless, several times things.....important things like my wallet and cellphone.....have fallen out. The pockets aren't deep enough and open easily (poke out) when sitting or even standing/walking.....the Compass Pant had a velcro closure on the pocket and it was deep enough and didn't open (poke out), plus it had a tiny pocket within the main pocket that also had the velcro closure. The Trailhead has a little pocket outside the main pocket and it's OK, but not as discreet and certainly no velcro closure. Pockets are VERY important to me with my career and travel, they're NOT a fashion statement but a functional necessity. Next, the belt issue which has been mentioned by others. Thank goodness the Trailhead has belt loops because I must wear a belt with them. The Compass pant came with it's own, easy buckle belt that could go through the TSA x-ray without problems and didn't need to be removed for washing....great belt, stayed put, fast release buckle. And finally, with the cargo pockets so visible on Trailhead when I wear them to work it's quite noticeable that I'm wearing cargo pants (a bit too casual). At least with the Compass Pant I could wear them to work because they didn't have this issue. BRING BACK THE COMPASS PANT, but consider using the Trailhead material and color variety.

Trail or town

The fabric of the Trailhead "feels" thick, but they are a very light and breathable pant. Personally these would be better for cool weather hiking for me as I heat up pretty quickly and prefer items with more layering possibilities. The roll up cuff option is neat, but not sure how useful I will find it, unless I'm at the beach. (Now there's a thought...)
So far have just worn them to the office (its pretty casual), but would actually take them out on the trail. Fabric seems durable enough to offer protection without pulling or tearing from every day trail obstacles.
Rise is a bit high giving me a gap at the back, but this is a problem I have with most pants. Rest of the fit is fine.
And huzzah for a 31 inch inseam! Long enough to touch my shoes without dragging in the dirt.
Looking forward to getting these out of the office and into the woods.
Oh, and normally color isn't a bit thing to me, but the Pelican color fabric is too transparent. Everyone would know I'm wearing my Sunday undies on a Tuesday.

Performance & Comfort In One

I bought these pants prior to a summer vacation in which I wasn't sure what activity I would get myself into. I was impressed by the fit and stretch of the material and the pockets were an added bonus. I also liked that they could be rolled to capri length. I actually ended up wearing these pants on a 3hr horseback ride in hot weather in July in the OBX. They were perfect! They were cool/comfortable/stretchy and also allowed for a few stashed essentials in the pockets (zippered on the back and side leg good for a key and cards/ID/cash) and the velcro pocket good for easy access to a camera) and protection from abrasions and bugs while riding. These pants would be great for hiking as they have a lot of stretch. They also look like they could go from adventure into the casual evening and be dressed up a little while traveling (I bought them in black). Very pleased with my choice.

Nice pant

I wear this type of pant in cool weather and when traveling. I travel to Scotland a lot and the quick dry fabric is so helpful and lightweight to pack. I have not taken these on a trip yet. They are extremely comfortable with the stretch fabric and the blue color is a nice option. I anticipate that I will get baggy knees fairly quickly though. I am 5'3" and 3/4 and had a bit of trouble finding a happy inseam. I seem to be right in between the regular and the short....no fault to the pants. I find that the entire pant gets smaller not just the length when going short. I ended up with the regular and can always take a small hem in needed.

Great pants

I went in looking for the Compass pants like lots of other reviewers, but found these instead. They feel a lot less sporty/hikey and more like a casual pant, but I gave them a try and am now not sure I would go back. They look better, can go to a restaurant without wondering if I'm dressed enough etc., and they're a lot more comfortable running than I expected. As in totally comfortable, not noticeable! They're also quite tough, where the Compass would pull and not retain shape, these stay true to shape. My only complaint is colors - none of them go with my skin tone. I went with black, but really wish there was a khaki and a gray in the selections.

Love these pants!

I recently went on vacation to Ireland (cool, rainy) and Paris (warm, sunny). These pants will convert from long to capri length so were appropriate for both climates. We were traveling two weeks and I took three pairs, two black and one beige, and just kept washing them in the hotel sinks and drying them in the shower stall. They would dry overnight if I rolled them up in a towel to get out excess water before hanging. Also, I work in a casual setting and wear these pants long with a nice shirt. They are very comfortable with nice material and style.

Stylish, Light Weight and Utilitarian

With a flattering fit and a variety of sizes and lengths to fit all body types, these trail pants are a wonderful addition to anyone's closet who is serious about hiking. These pants have enough stretch to move with you but not lose their shape, are water resistant and lightweight enough for a hot long day on the trail yet versatile enough to wear over long underwear on colder days. So...run to EMS and grab yourself several pairs while they last!

Great pants!

The color is appealing and the versatility of these pants is awesome. They do stretch out after a day of wear but come out of the wash like new. At 5'3 and 138 with a curvy backside, I am between a 10 and 12 so I sized up and they fit great: flattering back, no gapping, a little long but not ridiculously so, and capri length fits just right. Great pants.

Great slacks

Bought these slacks for a trip to Europe and started wearing them right away. They are by far the most comfortable casual slacks I have ever owned. The fabric has just the right amount of give, yet they hold their shape. They fit comfortably just below the waist and the pockets are just right - not too many and not too big. I would definitely buy more.
Marytripper at Eastern Mountain Sports (EMS) on 04/04/2013

Best pants i've ever owned, period!

I got two pair of Trail Pants in black and ivory, and got loads of complements on the fit and style. My partner went out and got a pair for herself. We both love them so much, that we purchaced additional pairs in blue, kakhi and black online. The length option S-R-L makes these the ultimate perfect pair of slacks for so many occasions.

Negative Reviews:

Poor replacement for the Compass pants

I went to the EMS store in search of the Compass pants and found these to be the replacement downgrade. The back of the pants buckle out a bit and there's no belt or drawstring to close the gap. My biggest peeve with these pants is there is only one attachment on the pant legs (rather than the two on the Compass pants) to secure the pants when rolling them up. When hiking with such a design half the pant leg unravels. Very disappointing

Not what I hoped for

Having just returned from a great hiking vacation where I wore my EMS Compass pants nearly everyday, I headed to EMS today to get another pair only to be told they were discontinued and the Trailhead pants were the new replacement. While the Trailheads look nice, they don't fit at all the same. They sit lower and are not nearly as comfortable on the leg when rolled up. Please bring the Compass pants back! You can't improve on something that is already perfect.
Mollie the hiker at Eastern Mountain Sports (EMS) on 06/06/2013

too bad you changed the product

I bought this product's predecessor late in last year's season and loved it. Really looked forward to buying more this year but the product changed. I bought 2 believing they would be similar and they fall significantly short. BTW, some other reviews said as much. They are not as warm, less room for layers, no water resistant belt (big loss)and the cut does not fit as well (opens in back, tighter in hips). PLEASE bring back old product !!

Want my compass pants back!

I tried this replacement for the compass and I'm throughly disappointed. The material feels slightly heavier, there is no built in belt so it gapes away from my back, and the pockets are now at a spot that they part open unless you are standing perfectly straight. I've tried all the other pants in the EMS store and none fit like the compass pant. Hope they come back because I won't buy these pants. Definitely not an improvement.
Birdiewatcher at Eastern Mountain Sports (EMS) on 05/05/2013

Bring back the "Compass"

Tried the NEW "Compass Pants Replacement," and all I can say is, "Not the same pants at all." Material is too thick, pants gap in the back and they do not fit the same way at all. So disappointed since I wear my Compass pants all the time and have recommended them to all of my family and friends. Please bring back the Compass!

Bring back the Compass Pants!

1) Miss Compass. Unfortunately, you didn't make sizing comparable to Compass, so when I ordered the Trailhead to try it, I had to return it for a larger size.
2) Fit poorly. Was psyched to get more Compass pants, but won't get more of these.

Bring back the Compass Pants!!

1) Meant to replace Compass Pants. You made a new pant, though, that I had to return for size, because your sizing is not consistent with Compass sizing.
2) Less tailored than Compass. Disappointing.

Size does matter

Purchased two pants in the same size and only one pair fit. Sizes are not made the same. Must try on for fit.

Comfy but not Flattering

I wanted some lightweight comfy pants for walking my dog and doing yard work in the summer. They are definitely comfortable and cool. They are long enough to tuck into my socks for tick prevention. The fit is a bit awkward, as the waist gaps in back and the side pockets stick out and don't lay flat. Good enough for what I needed them for.
Miss Joy at Eastern Mountain Sports (EMS) on 06/06/2013

Not as good as what they replaced!

I purchased because I really liked the previous version of these pants (or the pants that they replaced). I'm happy that the belt was dropped. But the waist line and "slimmer" fit doesn't feel right all all.
