Eastern Mountain Sports Trailhead Shorts 9 in. Reviews:

Positive Reviews:

perfect fit, comfortable and flattering

These sit below the waist, but are still very comfortable, which surprised me. I have put on weight (mostly muscle from hiking) in my backside, but they are still very flattering. They are amazingly breathable during hot, humid weather. I now have four pairs and wouldn't trade them for anything.

Comfort is number one for me. I can't tolerate anything that is tight or pinches in the waist or hips. In addition, I am in between a petite and a regular, so I typically have a hard time getting pants that fit well. This style- as well as the full-length back beauty pants- are incredibly comfortable and fit like they were made for me.

Have purchased several

These shorts fit me well, don't stretch out during wear, and look nice. They run a bit snugger than the old compass shorts and don't have a belt, so the fit is less forgiving and may not fit all. The fabric isn't quite as nice or stretchy as the previous ones but they keep their shape better on hot sweaty days and for hikes. I have all three colors and am not as fond of the green as it is brighter than expected.

great fit, versatile, comfortable

I have a long rise but I don't like pants or shorts that fall right at my navel. These fit perfectly (about 1.5" below my navel), and they gap at the waist only enough to tuck in a shirt if I want to. I didn't have any problems with the zippers, as some mentioned, though you do need both hands to open the vertical zipper on the left side. I'm 5'5" and weigh 115 and the size 4 is just right.

Comfortable, cool, and flattering

I wear these for everday casual wear and they will be great for hiking as well, the fabric stretching with the movement of your legs. I like the simple, clean design of these pants....like the hem length.....and they flatter my rather straight, small hipped physique. I wish they were a little bit smaller in the waist. The 4 is too tight, and the 6 is a bit bigger than I need....but they are still wearable, feel good and look nice.

Nice Shorts

I ordered the Trailhead Shorts for a several reasons: I couldn't find hiking shorts in my size locally; I wanted hiking shorts in black; and hiking in Florida means wearing anything that wicks away moisture. That's what I found in the Trailhead Shorts. These shorts are great! They fit perfectly - exactly as described. They're stylish, so I could wear them to run errands if I chose to. I like them so much, I'll be ordering another pair soon.

Love them!

I don't like clothes to be too big on me, and I like them to flatter my figure...these fit the bill. A lot of outdoorsy clothes are not feminine, but these look nice with a nice shirt, and they are suitable for outdoor excursions! Pack small, lightweight, great all around product.

Good for every occasion

The shorts wear great and look great. I wore them on vacation and they were easy to wash by hand and wear. They went from exploring caves and markets to dinner in a nice casual resturant. Now I wear them at home for work as a massage therapist.

Negative Reviews:

Terrible

I too was looking for a Compass Short replacement and was directed to the Trailhead. Everything that was great about the Compass shorts is missing. Every spring I would buy the Compass shorts because they were perfect for hiking but dressy enough to go out in. The rise of the Trailhead is much too short- they ride very low on the hips. They may look more stylish to some people this way, but from a utility standpoint they fail. Wake up call to EMS- you're an outfitter for enjoying the outdoors, not just another place to buy everyday clothes. I don't like the zip pockets- I have to have both hands free and articulate the zipper with fingers. With the Compass shorts, the Velcro strip held the pockets closed very nicely and I could reach into my pockets by just pushing one hand in and breaking the Velcro tab open. Over all the years I wore the Compass shorts, I never lost anything out of my pockets no matter what strange positions I was sometimes in on the trail. I also don't like the waist of the Trailheads at all- it is not adjustable thus uncomfortable and as I mentioned, the rise is way too short and the "waist" sits on my hips like low riders. With the Compass shorts I could adjust my waist very nicely with the belt provided and the shorts sat at my waist. With the Compass short, when I was on the trail and would bend over or be in other awkward positions you didn't have to worry about revealing your bottom. With the Trailhead, showing one's bottom while bending over is a sure thing. It is just not a hiking/outdoor short like the Compass Shorts AND pants were. I strongly urge EMS to bring back the Compass series.

Not the fit I was hoping for.

I thought these shorts were very well made and nice to look at. Unfortunately, I had to return them, because the waist was too low and the rise too short for my comfort. I am looking for a short to replace the Women's Compass Shorts 9", but these were not as comfortable for me.

EMS trailhead shorts

Did not like this year's styling. Have a pair from last year and love the style and the fit. Wish you would go back to that style. would likie to buy another pair . Last year's style had a belt and a casual fit.

Replaced a much better short

Trailhead shorts replaced a much better short that EMS had last year...not as nice looking. Have a 'boy's pants' look to them. Larger waist band than most women want.

Poor Substitute

They have taken a wonderful product , the Compass line and replaced with a product with inferior details.
