As advertised

I got this pair of pants and wore them for a trip to Yosemite. They were perfect. The mornings were cool and a bit chilly too start in just shorts. As the day warmed up, it was very easy to unzip and take the legs off over my hiking shoes, roll up the legs and put them in my pack not taking much room. I've always been afraid of wearing nylon clothing as I fell I get overheated, but these are breathable. Lots of pockets, nice for the little things. I'm 5'3" and ordered the short length, they were perfect for me as when I've tried other zip off pants, they're always too long. I did order another pair of these pants in another color. My next big trip will be a safari in Africa and these pants will be perfect! They pack nicely and don't take much room.

Best zip off pants yet

After 15 years of another retailer's Sahara pants, it was great to find some zip off pants that aren't quite so bulky and move with you climbing over large logs, scrambling off trail. Also work well with backpack. Zippers work better too but still plenty of room to get bottom pant leg over boots. Most "fashion" zip offs don't go off over boots. Like, what's the point? You don't wear zip off pants for fashion. I wish more companies would fire their fashion designers and hire more real outdoor gear designers that understand the constraints and needs of the sports they supposedly design for. These pants need a belt since the waist is a little large and my waist is not small - like 29".. I'm 5' 1" with short legs and the short length works well.

Best hiking pants EVER

Being only 4'11 and a size 12, it is not fun trying to find pants that fit. These pants feel soft, not scratchy. The color is very light like a soft sage tint. They are extremely comfortable, easy to move in and lightweight. They have ample pockets everywhere you want them, deep ones, zipped ones, vertical and horizontal. There is a fabric hoop inside the waistband to hang your pants up. The waist is comfortable and rides right below belly button. My inseam is only 25" so the pants are about 2" too long but they will fit someone who is 5'0. They are very comfortable in the thigh/butt and not overly baggy in the back thigh. To me, these pants are absolutely perfect and money well spent.

Everything a hiking pant should have!

I have a collection of convertible pants from many companies and have wanted a length that was normal, shorts that were a 7-9" length, slim pockets, enough stretch to not bag after a couple miles and secure pockets. These pants hit everything on the tick list. Took them on a long hike and loved them - articulated knee was in the right place, they had great give, never bagged and looked great going for a bite to eat later that night. Washed well and keep their shape without much fuss. Didn't need it, but they come in short and long lengths as well. You'll want every color!

Too low on waist

Bought these pants for a trip to Costa Rica. Really wanted something quick drying for the humidity and that converts from pant to short for the heat. The fabric is really nice and I liked the look, but when I tried them on, they had a very low rise waist, more around my hips then my waist, and they rode up in the crotch so were not very comfortable. Can't imagine wearing them to zipline or hike. I will be returning them and hope to find a pair of convertible pants with a waist that is actually a waist.

A happy backpacker!

Love these pants. When I first got them in the mail and tried them on, I immediately ordered two more pairs because the 2S fit me perfectly. Sometimes when I try on a short size, they're still too short, but these are great. They zip off into shorts about 2-3 inches above my knee. They are very breathable, lightweight, and easy to move around in. I would recommend them for hot weather rather than cold. I am backpacking through Panama right now and am so glad to have them. They are worth the money!

Best hiking/safari pants for petite girl

I was looking for pants for my safari trip in South Africa. As a petite woman (5'3, 105lb), It is really hard to find a pair of pants that fits you well. And this EMS pants was perfect. They have regular length and short length, and I chose size 0 short. No alteration required and it fits me perfectly. It looks a little big before you try it on, but it does not look big at all when you wear it. And it is very stylish compared to other hiking pants you may find.

Awesome fit!

I've been searching for a long time for a zip off pant that "fits well." I recently went on a Bike and Barge Trip and they worked out great - room enough for a pair of thin long underwear underneath; room in the knee for comfortable biking; and yet they look good enough for a casual dinner in the evening. Didn't get to use the shorts but know I will when hiking this summer. Great for travel. I'm buying another pair.

Good travel/hiking pants

This is a fine pair of pants for casual wear - hiking or travel. Great material for packing. Dries quickly. I got caught in the rain while walking in them one day, and the water just beaded up and was easily wiped off the pants. They bagged out a little after wearing them for a long time, but not nearly as much as another pair of zip-off pants I own.

Great for Hiking

I'm usually a regular pant length so I tried the 8 Regular in the store, but they were too short, so I ordered 8 Long online - perfect! I've only worn these as shorts so far, but they've been through 20 plus miles of hiking so far and have held up great. Very comfortable and great pockets!

Negative Reviews:

not worth it

I have narrow hipbones so need pants to fit snugly on my hips so they don't slide down. I bought a smaller size so they would fit snugly but due to the higher waist it was too tight on my waist because the hips were too loose and the pants would slide down. The worst part is that the the zipper was too tight on my thighs.
The length was great, I'm 5'2" and 113lbs and bought a size 2 short.
Next time I would choose lower waisted pants with no zipper in the leg portion. I really liked the EMS Compass Pants in a size 2 short and really hope they will make them again soon!!!

Great Outdoor Pant but....

Previously owned the Cargo pants and thought I would try the Trailhead style. This style of pant did not have enought pockets for my active lifestyle (hiker and backpacker) and just didn't look as good on me as the Camp Cargo pants. Returned them for a few more pairs of Camp Cargo, which rock, by the way.

These pants were badly designed. Back pockets puckered around the buttocks. The color was a blue grey instead of a real grey.
Lljett at Eastern Mountain Sports (EMS) on 09/09/2013

low riders

Pants looked great, nice light weight material, but for hiking, the low waistline surprised me. Unfortunately, I had to return them

Great except for stitching

I took these on a 7 week trip to South America, with plenty of day hikes. Over all I really liked them. I am petite, yet they fit well. They were really easy to wash and would dry very quickly. Although I did not realize it when I bought them, they provided great wind protection, even in Patagonia! As others have commented, they are still comfy with a layer underneath. The one down side is that a week into the trip, the stitching on the inseam started to give. I borrowed some thread to fix it. A bit disappointing that after so little use they started to fall apart. Not withstanding this, I would buy them again!

Waist too low

I really liked these pants, but cannot wear pants where waist is below my natural waist. I wish these came in natural waist height with back elastic like my Columbia Titanium convertible pants which fit GREAT and I love. The quality of the material of these pants is great and I like the colors, but had to return them because of the waist issues. I now have the EMS Isabella pants which I like very much, but they are not convertible.
