Eastern Mountain Sports Zen Daypack Review:

a lot of thought went into this design..

The Zen daypack makes it easy to stay organized and gives you quick access to all your stuff. All compartments are accessible thru separate zippers from the outside, not little dividers inside big compartments like some bags. The bigger zippers start on top and run down alternating sides so it's easy to find the right zipper every time, and with the big flaps supported diagonally from above they can't flop wide open and spill their contents while you fish for something on the move. Glasses compartment is top center, suspended over main load, big enough to hold cases for both sunglasses and regular glasses and easily accessed for swapping when going indoors or out; also has a cord pass-thru for music. Big central compartment easily swallows a change of clothes for bike commuting, rain jacket, lunch, and lots more, also has hydration bladder pouch with tube pass-thru. Computer pocket has sling bottom to keep computer from banging on ground, and all spaces have light-colored liners to help you see what's inside. All padding and straps are well placed and work well; bag is very comfortable, snug and balanced when loaded, looks tidy, and slips easily under an airplane seat.

I travel a lot and grew to hate my old pack's identical parallel zippers and deep, dark compartments that would dump their contents if unzipped far enough to see the bottom. I just lived out of my new ZEN pack for 2 weeks of travel to a professional conference and it made everything easy. Only negatives - pack won't sit upright on its bottom, needs to hang, lean, or lay down; and the big central compartment has the only weatherflap-covered zipper. All those unprotected zippers are great for quick access, but I'd like my computer to have as much weather protection as my clothes and lunch. But overall this is a very cleverly designed, practical bag that's easy to live with.
