Great field pants.

I am a biologist working in Florida and I own 3 pairs of these pants. I wear one pair a week and in the course of a normal workweek I really put it through its paces.
My job has me frequently covered in sweat, sand, dirt/mud, animal excrement, and soot. These pants have withstood cactus barbs, tree limbs, serrated palmetto stalks and waist-high water. I especially love the larger-than-normal pockets, which is my favorite thing about these pants. These were the ONLY field pants that I could find in a size 16.

My biggest complaint is the unnecessary pocket buttons. The back pockets are fine, but the buttons on the side and hip pockets are more annoying than anything. Most of mine on the side/hip pockets have since been popped off, either from getting caught on things or from me hitting them whenever I put/pull things in/from my pockets.

I did have one pair rip down the side of the back pocket. It was an older version of the pants (w/2 front buttons) that had a couple of pinholes in the butt before they ripped. I plan on fixing them to continue wearing in the field.

Great Pockets; Comfortable

I bought these pants because I just bought a smartphone, which doesn't fit in women's jeans pockets. I wasn't disappointed! The pockets on these pants are enormous, but they're darted nicely to fold into the body when not in use. The knee pockets are 5"x6"x1" and the front hip pockets are significantly larger than they look in the photo (they extend past the middle seam).

They do chafe slightly, but it seems like the kind that will disappear after a few washes and a little use. Otherwise, they're very comfortable.

Size is a little large for me; I bought a 2 and wish they were sold in 0, but they look fine with a belt.

I'll be buying another pair soon.

My favorite pants!

I love these pants and bought two pair in each color in a year's time. The only downfall, and I am not sure why, is the difference in length, as there wasn't any sign on the tag that the pants were long or average. I can deal with the length issue-as only 2 pairs were significantly different than the others. What I like most is the comfort of the pants, but I also enjoy that I can dress them up or down depending on the top I wear. My oldest pair did drop a button on the back pocket but I wear these everywhere! Camping, hiking, traveling, shopping...doesn't matter...and all seasons, too! I only wish the length issue could be addressed. Love EMS!

Great Pants:Ads show 2 Styles-confusing

I like these pants. They are breathable and fit very well although I had to order a 2 instead of the 4 that I ordered on the original pants from the same company. They are neat and professional looked coupled with right top and useful for research in war zones as well as casual wear to work etc, The problem that limits them in terms of use in research in war zones is largely color. I got a dark color because that was all that was available. They should come also in military green and a brown that is not too dark and suited for hot weather.

These are my favorite pants!

I just adore these pants! The fit is super, though probably run a tad large in the seat and waist. (I'm not complaining. I ordered a size 2 instead of my usual 4 and they fit just fine.) The fabric has a soft hand and is durable without being stiff, scratchy or bulky. I'm a wildlife/nature photographer who often crawls through the muck and pushes through the brush. The comfortable, relaxed yet not baggy, fit and the ample pockets provide me with plenty of places in which to stash lens filters, etc. without binding up the pant. Yep, I highly recommend these great pants by EMS!!

great pants but too short

these are my favorite casual pants. with the exception of hot hot weather, i wear them all the time. i bought a second pair in a different color thinking 'no need to try them on,' however this pair was at least an inch shorter than my first pair. i'm 5'8" with a long torso (not legs). sadly i returned them with no luck finding any in the proper length. you may want to reinforce the buttons - they tend to fall off rather easily (faulty thread?). despite the flaws, i still love these pants.

Good pants, but need different buttons

I like these pants. I love that I can get them in "short" lengths. I like the cargo pockets. My main complaint is that the buttons pop off all the time. I even cut the buttons off the hand pockets, as they really werent necessary, and sewed them on the back pockets with heavy quilting thread. I think they lasted for a day before I lost them. They catch on everything. I have 2 pairs of these, and no buttons on any of the pockets.

great cargo pant, with caveats

My staple wardrobe!

But I miss the nylon zip-off pants from 5-6 years ago!!! Much better fit, light weight, better color (stone) almost worn out now.

The front pockets should start higher -- no need for buttons.

The leg pockets - wish they were stitched down, with no gusset.

I always run a seam up the back of the legs, as they are way too wide.

I wear a size 6-8, but in these, a size 2-4.

Great pants!

I was looking for some great cotton cargo pants that could be worn casually or on a day hike in the woods (I don't like wearing synthetic pants to hike in!). These fit great; they don't sit too low, like some women's pants these days; and they are really comfortable. The back pockets accentuate the rear area! Great colors, too; I got the shale & olivine. The shale is a nice dark grey-brown and the olivine is, well, light olive. Would recommend highly!

Great pants!

This is my second pair of these pants. They fit really well, true to size, they are long for me but I'm only 5'2". I wear them to work (casual environment), weekends, working around the house. Plenty of pockets (love the side pocket for my cell phone). Waist is perfect - not too low when I work around the yard, and not too high that they look like "mom-pants". They wash and dry well, no shrinking.

Negative Reviews:

Did not withstand first day of travel

I purchased these pants to wear on a 10 day backpacking trip to Central America. I wore them for my flight and first day of travel, but when I took them off upon reaching my first destination, I realized that the seam along the inner edge of the back right pocket had torn all the way through. The pants were completely ruined--there was a several inch long tear which went all the way through the pants and allowed my underwear to be visible. My first day of travel was very casual and did NOT involve any activities that should have caused the pants to break. I am very disappointed. Luckily, I had another pair of EMS cargo pants (the lightweight ones that convert into shorts) that held up well for the remaining 9 days.

Button, Button, Who's got the Button?

Within a couple weeks of buying, was loosing buttons all over the WORLD! Literally, Lost first from front pocket in Holland, second from back pocket in Iceland and third and fourth from waistband in US.. Noticed threads appearing down the inside seam of right leg as well as seams on legs appear to shrink up considerably more than the rest of the pants material..bad thread? hmm... love the look, nice pockets for travel, but not sure I can reccomend due to poor craftsmanship. Sent a note to EMS as I did buy them online, hoping they will redeem themselves.

Comfortable but poor quality

I bought 2 pairs of these pants because they were so comfortable and they allowed me to move well. Plus the great side pockets, were perfect for work. However, after the first wash/wear the buttons started to fall off both pairs. Then within the next few weeks I had a huge rip in them. Torn around the pockets, backside. Disappointing. Too bad b/c they had potential. Not worth the money.

I have to agree with the other review about the buttons falling off all around the world. I managed to lose the first two of the buttons in Nepal, another in Amsterdam, and a fourth in the US. I really like these pants, but for some reason all the buttons fall off...
Traveller at Eastern Mountain Sports (EMS) on 03/03/2011

not as sturdy as I thought...

After slightly less than a month buttons are falling off, the double stitching down the leg is pulling apart, and the pockets are separating from the butt at the flap seam. They were comfy, but I'd like durable too.

Maddening buttons!

On the up side: these pants fit great and are comfortable. The rise is not too high and I like how they sit on my hips rather than narrowing ridiculously at the waist or flaring out at the hips. Cuffs fit over my hiking boots nicely. I would not recommend them for backpacking as the fabric is fairly heavy cotton and not breathable, so you would get cold and wet. By the end of the day they are a bit saggy. Most importantly: THE POCKET BUTTONS ALL POP OFF ALL THE TIME! Only the fly button stays on, which is because it's actually a rivet style. I have been wearing my pants for about a year and I am constantly losing the pocket buttons and sewing them back on. They get caught on everything and come right off. Finally I have given up on them and will try to replace them with flat buttons or rivet style buttons. The pants themselves are holding up fine.

Good style, poor construction

I have been looking for a long time for a traditional 100% cotton hiking cargo pant and this is it. While I love nylon, I like the durability of a cotton hiking pant. The overall design of this pant is good but the construction was poor. The fly was not completely sewn in and I only realized that about 1/3 of the way into my hike - embarrassing to say the least. Also the button closures on the cargo pockets are annoying and difficult to open/close when you need to reach for something quickly. A sturdy snap would be much better. I'm returning these for an exchange but would also like to see more 100% cotton pants and capris offered.

I love these pants so much that I have 4 pairs. I think they run a bit short, because they fit me pretty well and I'm usually a petite size. Like one of the other reviewers, I have had tears on ALL 4 pairs on the inside of the back pockets. There is a definite problem with the way the pocket is attached. I am too lazy to go back to exchange or return them, so I keep using iron-on patches to repair them. The pants are so comfortable, I'm considering buying more, despite the poor construction.

live in these, a few drawbacks

i am ordering my sixth pair of these. I live in them, work, play, and travel. I have learned that as soon as I get them I resew the buttons on with fishing line, as they WILL pop off on first wearing. The shanks are like little knives that will cut through regular thread. I also wish they were longer as I will only wear them with boots, otherwise they appear too short. They need to have several lengths. That said, I love their comfort and the fact that they are 100%cotton.
pam at Eastern Mountain Sports (EMS) on 06/06/2012

Even hipless women will need a belt with these. They are not sized for hippy women with smaller waists. But the thing I really disliked is the buttons on the front pockets. Even when they are unbuttoned the lump from the button makes it unpleasant/hard to get your hands in your pockets. The material has a nice feel and the green is a little brighter olive than appears on my computer.
River Walker at Eastern Mountain Sports (EMS) on 10/10/2011

NOT Classic Rise :(

I was very disappointed to find that these pants are not Classic Rise, as described--they are definitely low-mid rise (waist falls at least an inch below naval.) I need these for hiking and being active and they are just not comfortable/free moving enough for that. Really too bad as they are nice looking pants with the features I wanted, but they are going back.
World Traveler at Eastern Mountain Sports (EMS) on 06/06/2011

So short.

As much as I'd like them to, these pants just don't fit right. I'm 5'8" and thin... size 2 long (which of course they don't make) would probably fit perfectly. The size 4 is too baggy and about an inch and a half too short for my liking. It is too bad, because they are really nice aside from that.
Naturalist at Eastern Mountain Sports (EMS) on 04/04/2010

Like the style but mixed results

These are so comfortable that I wear them for everything - camping, hiking and casual wear. I liked these pants so much that I bought a second pair. Unfortunately, the quality is not consistent as the 2nd pair shrunk after the first washing. I was disappointed.

I would recommend them if I was confident that they wouldn't shrink.
Amejo at Eastern Mountain Sports (EMS) on 02/02/2010

too short and material by pocket ripped

I loved these pants, however, the material by the left rear pocket just ripped a 5 inch rip during washing after 4 times wearing. No warning at all. Not repairable either. I bought another pair. So far so good. Also, they shrink up to short.

Not as good as the old style cargos

The cut is not flattering nor are the pants as comfy as previous pairs of cargos made by EMS.
