Echo Ion Fly Reel -
Made of a hybrid of cast and machined aluminum, the Ion has all the benefits of a fully machined bar-stock reel without the high price. Maintenance-free Rulon® disc drag delivers backlash-free, instant drag reaction from a one-way roller clutch bearing. The drag’s low start-up resistance protects light tippets. Stainless steel internal components are primarily designed for freshwater use. They can be used in the salt, provided extra care is taken to clean and lubricate them after each day on the water. Positive position, click-drag knob. Incoming/outgoing audible click. Fast line-pickup large-arbor spool. Impact-resistant matte-black finish.

Right on!

I use the 8/10, for musky hunting in the Northwoods. This reel has taken a beating(on and off the water) and I am yet to find fault. I fish this reel hard every day, and it has never let me down. For the price I am quite impressed with the quality and performance. In fact, I would pay even more for this reel if I had to. It's rugged performance is equally matched with attractive construction. I will buy another one in a heart beat if I ever have to replace this one.

very good reel for the price

I use the ION 6/7 for bonefish on calm (little wind) days. It has worked great. I have not experienced the issues others mentioned regarding spool wobble or the drag issues and I am using this in the salt/tropics. I immediately put it in a fresh water tank after each use as I suspect the metal parts would corrode pretty quickly if I didn't. But after 2, 2 week trips to Belize it has already paid for itself in my book.

Not good

I just spent a week on the Kenai using this reel for reds for the first time. It worked okay for about a day, then the drag somehow stopped working. By the third day, there was absolutely no drag, and the knob was stuck. I eventually hooked a fish which I couldn't stop with no drag, and ended up losing (all of) my fly line because of it. I eventually managed to loosen the drag knob, but this was only b/c the screw holding it on broke! Don't buy this reel. I can handle cheap, but not if it doesn't even live up to cheap expectations!

I purchased the 8/10 model to match onto my switch rod as the price was enticing and could hold line needed. Thats about all the good features i have found out this reel has. The drag system blew up the first day out fishing for kings, the reel wobbles to extremes, the screw holding the foot come loose, makes a grinding noise even after cleaned, the drag knob slips just by casting. I WOULD RECCOMMEND TO NOT BUY THIS REEL THERE ARE BETTER REELS EVEN FOR CHEAPER.
