With a modular design, the Mantle Crash Pad from Edelrid gives you versatility for your many boulder problems, and with 4 inches of thickness and durable construction, you can count on soft falls for seasons to come.
This is a great pad for the money. I wanted a large surface area with a lot of foam and this definitely covers that.
The shoulder straps for this pad are padded and super comfy, they even have daisy chain loops on them to carry things. The hip belt doesn't have any padding but is a definite plus to have. It also has carrying straps on the side and top of the pad which helps to pull it around and to carry it.
The padding is great, have taken some huge falls and not bottomed out. The sit start pad is sweet (I assumed it would be like a carpet mat), it is almost as big as one of the halves of the pad and it is padded (almost an inch thick), so you can always throw it on top when doing high balls for just a bit more padding.
The fact that you can zip this pad to make the two halves connect on the long or narrow sides is awesome. You can make the pad longer for traverses and also for long narrow problems, or even to take a good nap while everyone else is climbing. You can also zip up the bottom half when it is closed (especially when the sit start pad is in it) for when you need to raise or lower it by rope. The logo on the pad and the sit start pad are both made out of carpet, so they are both perfect for wiping your shoes off before you start your problems.
The pad itself is huge even when closed. Couldn't fit it in the trunk my girlfriend's Grand Am. I always have to use my backseat. So be aware.
The only thing that could have made this pad any better was using even stronger material. I haven't had any problems yet with the pad and don't anticipate any soon, but it would just be great to get thicker material just to have that peace of mind.
