Not long ago, the ESI Chunky Mountain Bike Grips were a well-kept secret of elite endurance racers. But, the secret is out, and you're now able to experience the smooth ride and all-conditions control that these silicone wonder-grips have become so well known for.
ESI's grips are built from silicone for a host of reasons. Chief among them is the vibration damping that silicone provides. Basically, these are much more effective than a standard grip at canceling out high frequency vibrations, which ultimately leads to numbness and pain in the hands. It's especially noticeable during long rides, but the benefits will be apparent every time that you hop on your bike. Silicone is grippy stuff, which is good news, because that grip works in both directions. As a result, the grips are secured not only to your hands, but to your handlebars as well. In fact, when installed per the instructions, these grips stick firmly to handlebars, even in the rain. And naturally, they provide a solid hold for your hands, regardless of sweat or dirt. Better yet, because silicone has memory, these grips will break in to the shape of your hand, providing a custom-fit that gets better the more that you ride them.
These grips are offset, which means that they're slightly thicker on one side than the other. So, when installing them, make sure that you have the thicker end facing your palms, and the thinner end underneath your fingers. This will ensure maximum vibration damping, while still providing a direct steering feel. The Chunky grips have a medium thickness that works well for most riders. Riders with smaller hands, or those who prefer thinner grips, will be better served by the ESI Racer's Edge grip.
The ESI Chunky Grips are available in one size and in the colors Black, Blue, Green, Red, and White. Please note that we advise referring to the included instructions for correct installation.
I went from ODI to ESI. Really b/c the ODI's were getting old and I finally wanted to try something different. These grips are really the posturepedic grips. They have a memory foam/cushion feel to them. I wear a large glove and they fit perfectly. I put them on my bar after cleaning the bar and then used denatured alcohol on the bar and rubbed inside the grip. Went on smoothly and instantly dried in place. No wobble or movement. Only problem is the bar end caps. They look cool but they are very fagile. I broke mine just laying the bike down on the ground a few times. Wrote company and they said I could buy more...sort of expected them to send a new set but they did offer to "grind down" a set to help them fit better.
Oh man. I just did a 24hr race on a rigid single-speed and I used these babies. I can't believe how crucial good grips are in this type of situation. These ESI Chunky MTB Grips really did the trick. Naturally people thought I was crazy to not run a suspension fork for an endurance event like this but I have to say the grips saved my hands, wrists, arms, neck, and more I'm sure...It's the Monday after, and I'm not even sore. Take that skeptics! Highly recommend for all types of MTBing...Not just an XC race grip. These babies are light and don't slip a lick...fo real...
I put these grips on all my bikes. They're light, durable, and comfortable. I use an air compressor to mount them on the bars. I've never had them slip, the silicone construction is super durable, and they've never flaked/peeled like previous rubber grips I've used. Sure they're not super flashy, but I prefer a solid, even, surface to hold onto.
I've been running ESI grips for almost four years now. I've tried lightweight foam grips and a variety of lock on grips, but none have the feel that the ESI chunky has. You can't go wrong with these!
Simplicity and perfection. They stick like lock ons yet feel like pillows ! I have them on every rig I own, XC, cx, all mountain, single speed. The only grip I use !
You can't find a better grip around. Great feel, density, and width. Also very light and cheap.
