Excellent Product

I used this product to repair a few dime sized gouges in the gel coat on my canoe. It's so easy, rough up the surface around the damaged area with sand paper, wipe area with solvent that is in the kit. Squirt resin into the provided cup, add very small amounts of colors to get the right shade. I found one drop of color went a long way. Finding a deep green was one drop of red, 2 drops of blue and one drop of black. The color is a paste so my term "drop" is about the equivalent of a drop. One the color matches add the hardener, mix well and apply with provided squeegee. There is a plastic film in the kit, it's recommended to put it over the patch during the cure cycle. I used the film on the 2 gouges, then noticed I had some serious wear on the keel so with the leftover resin I smoothed a layer over the wear spot. In a previous review someone wrote this product did not dry to a sandable finish and stayed tacky. Where I used the film the product dried great. Where I did not use the film it was still tacky and loaded up my sand paper right away. After educating myself on this I've learned that you have to block out oxygen during the cure time to get the best results. If it is not blocked there is a wax base ingredient in the resin that will surface. This wax is the tacky stuff. All you need to do is wipe down the area with acetone to remove the wax. Easily sandable after that. Sand paper is the only thing I had to purchase besides this kit. Use a high number grit paper(higher the number the smoother it is). I blended the repair in with 220 grit (dry sanding), then went to 600 grit to smooth it( wet sanding). Final was 1600 grit to get the scratches out. I used polishing compound on my repair spot after that and seriously, you cannot even see where a repair was made.
Screw this, I'm opening up a body shop, this is too easy. haha
You have all the time in the world to get the color mixed right. The hardener is the final ingredient to mix in a. Then you have a good 15 minutes of work time.
I recommend this product to anyone that needs to patch a blemish.

Gel coat has to go over ...

Gel coat has to go over resin. Manufacturers use a resin (such as Ebbtide, they use Ashland's AME 5000 resin) after the gel coat (after because boats are manufactured from the outside in ... the gel coat is sprayed on the mold first, then the matting and resin are laid up in layers inside the gel coat, which is the outermost layer). If you're repairing gel coat in reverse of the manufacturing process, you have 3 choices of what to lay the gel coat on, and none are epoxy. You can (1) use a laminating resin that will not dry when exposed to air. To get it to dry, you have to seal if off from the air by taping plastic over it.2. Use a top-coat resin (Boat US sells this).3. If the repair is to be made on top of gel coat only (i.e. the repair does not go to the fiberglass), wipe the gel coat with styrene, which will partially reactivate the existing gel coat, then fill the scratch with the gel coat paste.

I would recommend

I used this product to repair my gel coat on a 26 ft Doral. Easy to follow instructions and easy to use product. Sanded and buffed to a great shine after the repair was complete. I wish the color chart was more in depth, for example maybe have a color wheel to match to the boat then specific amounts to add of each color to achieve the desired color, but my color match was close enough, maybe my wife was right and I'm a perfectionist. Otherwise great product, just make sure that you thoroughly mix the hardener into the resin before applying. Would definitely recommend.

love it

Great. I had a couple big Chips in my Gelcoat, actually through my gelcoat. I mixed some up and was really happy with the color match. I had a few extra minutes so I filled a couple small scratches also. looks great. I am very verya happy.

Easy to use

Used to repair a few chips and small scratches thru the gel coat. The black and red were good matches so I did not have to custom match by mixing colors.

Negative Reviews:

Not sandable!

Did not dry to a sandable finish! I mixed it the way the instuctions said and it did not harden to a sandable finish. Mixed another batch with more hardner than called for and the same problem. After two days it still is tacky and not sandable. Now I have a big mess!
