The Evolv Men's Rex Approach Shoe includes a full-length EVA midsole for comfort on the hike to the cliff, and the sticky TRAX rubber outsole gets the job done on moderate climbing. Whether you're cruising up a steep alpine ridge or need footwear that can take on a long aid climb, the Rex Approach Shoe has you covered. Evolv added a rubber toe camp to decrease abrasion when you're jugging a pitch, and a flat edging platform helps you crank out a few 5.9 moves between your last piece and the anchor.

Great Approach shoe!!

Rating:****

First off sizing...runs BIG!! I had to go down to a size 10, and I typically have 10.5 with morton's toe (longer 2nd toe). Also the instep is a bit narrow so if your foot pronates or turns in you'll feel like your foot is hanging over nothing. As the other reviewers stated the sole is marking on some types of floor as well. That being said I've worn them constantly to see it they are a fit, and as I've broken them in they are becoming a great all around shoe. Sticky sole, stiff enough to hike in. Wide toebox for those with a medium size foot. Not much in the way of ankle support (low cut), but there is alot of padding somewhat like a skate shoe. Lacing goes far down the toe box like a climbing shoe to adjust the fit. All in all, I've found that I really like these shoes and am glad I bought a pair. So far the durability is fine and they seem like they are a great approach shoe.

Nice shoe, good comfort and sticky.

Rating:****

I agree with others that the fit is a little large, using two pair of socks and it's not bad. Have done a lot of off-trail scrambles in desert thrash zones that rip and shred, a good pair of shoes lasts maybe a year. These ripped near the lacing but the liner kept it from mattering (I sewed it up). The terrain is really bad on shoes, sand, gravel and rocks and a lot of basalt slopes on the angle of repose where the sticky sole makes it less chancy dancing through sections of cacti. I really like the cushioning in the shoe, I do 5-9 hour circuits up to 15-miles with a lot of vertical so comfort is important. A little more stiffness in the shank would be cool but the styker looks like it's more that style.

Great All Around Outdoor Shoe

Rating:****

I'm a old guy who looks for comfort and durability. I have used them in AZ and MT and they are great outdoors at both places. I bike in them as well. I have to admit that I also bought them for looks. It was cool wearing them around as casuals with jeans or shorts when I first got them. Lots of nice comments as dress. However, the black marks they left on the floor was not cool. Yes, I know the tread is made for grip outdoors and if you get lost while hiking you can use the sole to write SOS on a rock! Make this Evolv with a floor friendly sole and you will sell thousands for casual wear!

Bang for the buck

Rating:*****

Great look, much stiffer than I was expecting which is a plus. I get tons of compliments on them. nice sidewall cushion like that in a skate shoe. A little slick when walking on grass or tile but then again thats not really what they are for. For the price you cannot go wrong. True to size I thought. I wear anywhere between a 12-13 depending on the brand and a 12 in these works I do wear them unlaced most of the time though. Buy them

Beefy

Rating:*****

I bought these shoes after my other approach shoes fell apart. They are sturdier than they look in the picture and the toebox is ultra reinforced. I like the high rand around the toe and the insoles are cushy and better than any other approach/hiking shoe insole I've found so far. They climb decent and stand in aiders well - they are fairly stiff shoes.

comfy

Rating:*****

these shoes rock. They do exactly what they claim to do. I wear these shoes all the time now because they're so comfy and when i went out to teach my girl friend how to belay at a local easy crag (5.6-5.9), i didn't even bother putting on my more technical climbing shoes. Easily the best pair of approach shoes I've purchased.

Bargain approach shoes

Rating:****

I'm a fan of these. I bought them primarily for canyoneering and they have served me well in that realm. I've climbed some moderate rock routes in these shoes too and found they edge and stick well. They have held up well, they're comfy and very sticky. The size is true to sizing. I'd buy another pair.

Odd, did I get a one off?

Rating:****

The fit is large? I have very narrow feet, and have found that I can only wear very thin socks with these or they feel too tight - particularly at the end of the day. Other than that, they've performed well - good all around travel shoes as well.

Better than I expected

Rating:****

I really like the Rex shoes. They are very comfortable and fit the foot snuggly. They are pretty stiff like the others said. Haven't used them on a wall or rock yet but I could see how they would hold up well.

Negative Reviews:

These shoes SUCK!!

Rating:*

These shoes held up 5 days till the toe piece started peeling off. Add another week and the soles started peeling...I am not so sure that I would ever recommend Evolv shoes to anyone I like.. I also have a pair of Defys that blew out after 10 pitches. I guess if you put Sharma's name on something its suppose to be good... well I wonder if he has the same problem.. maybe he is so rich now that he uses a pair once then throws em away!! Don't buy these.... they suck!!

bottom fell apart

Rating:*

I have had these shoes for 4 weeks now and only worn it to the office. I haven't had a chance to use them on the rocks yet and already the bottom of the shoe is starting to come off from the back part. if I could do it over again I would pay a little extra and buy a better shoe. this is as cheap as you can get for an approach shoe and the quality reflects the price

art2557510 at Backcountry.com Outlet on 05/13/2009

modified skate shoe

Rating:**

this is a street shoe - as such, it is not bad. the problem is that it is touted as an approach shoe. the fit is mushy at best. support is non-existent and i don't trust it on ground that isn't completely flat. i guess it was meant to be worn to the gym or something. think twice about going with this shoe - be sure to try it on before you buy it.
