Fisher 'Gold Bug' - First day Outing

I bought my Fisher 'Gold Bug' last week and spent the week-end reading & rereading the manual before I even turned on the machine. It really paid off when going out the first time. I highly recommend anyone who buys this machine to do the same as it really helped me to understand how it works and, most importantly what NOT to dig up !
I first tried it out on my rock garden, where I know for certain specific rocks hold a variety of metals. I have rocks which contain streaks of Gold, others contain Platinum, Palladium, Silver & Copper which I picked from the river bed near my home. They are mixed in with a variety of other 'Pretty' rocks.
Each known sample registered exactly where the manual said it should.
I live in an old western pioneer town and they are doing some sewer work throughout town. I decided it might be a good hunting ground for old relics since, over time as the town grew I'm certain things got buried. I can say one thing, I literally got my two cents worth ;>} Along with a old pioneer-style nail and the top of a pencil.
I wish to stress again, read the manual over and over until you understand all the functions as it helped in discerning between junk targets which I was able to pass by and those signals which seemed promising. I did dig up a few of the least promising signals which only served to confirm what I already knew from reading the manual.
Once I receive the can of Bear Spray i ordered, I intend to head out to the known locations up in the Beartooth Mountain range (SW Montana) and try my luck.
This is my first detector so I can't say how it fares against the competition but, I believe it is well worth the money invested. It is well constructed and functions exactly as described.
I believe you will be equally impressed.
Good Luck & Good Hunting !

Superb gold detector

You can't find a better gold detector in this price range. Very sensitive, handles the mineralization well for a vlf machine. Paid for mine and then some the 4th time out with a 1/4 ounce nugget. I use an older pulse induction unit as my primary machine and have done well metal detecting for gold in central Az. The Gold Bug sold here at Cabelas is a superb gold detector in this price range. Very easy to setup and get used to it's operation even for a novice. I got one for a friend of mine and just last week he got, not only his 1st nugget ever, but 1-7 over a 2 day period. He got a total weight of 4.2 grams with the largest at 2.2 grams and the smallest being just a few grains. Great start to a new year!!! I highly recommend this gold detector for anybody, experienced or novice, for the purpose of nugget hunting. Also a great unit for kids since it is light weight and simple to learn it's operation. I use mine to compliment my heavier unit. I like the light weight for longer hikes into unknown areas and for cherry picking on exploratory prospecting trips. I even helped a friend find a lost ring in her front yard with this unit, so it would be a good relic hunter as well. I have found multiple nuggets with mine now and am quite fond of this unit. I have no complaints and highly recommend this superb gold detector.

Fisher 'Gold Bug' by Cabela's

Bounty Hunter, Fisher, Teknetics, and other manufactureers have produced products for specialty stores like Cabela's for a long time. This particular product is extremely interesting in that the faceplate says Fisher but, for all the world, it has the appearance of a Teknetics Omega 8000. Of course Fisher & Teknetics are both made by 1st Texas, who also make Bounty Hunter metal detectors, so it's not unusual to see a 'custom faceplate' sold by Cablea's or other retailers that resembles a product made by 1st Texas. What is interesting is that the 'Gold Bug' appears to have the same basic design, appearance, and ability of the Teknetics Omega 8000! Some of the features of the 'Gold Bug' are a bit different in that they are arranged in a different manner than the Omega 8000 are arranged but appears to be an Omega 8000 clone. If in fact this is an Omega 8000 with a 'New Skin', then it's well worth the asking price. If, in fact, this is what I think it is, the Fisher/Teknetics 11"DD coil may well fit this 'Gold Bug' making it an awesome product at a very good price.

Very impressed

I have used this metal detector enough that it is my go to unit. It was simple to learn to use and works well for a novice. I have been impressed with it's ability to detect small objects such as bullet fragments several inches down in heavily mineralized soil. Many people say it is a great unit for gold nugget detecting, but alas, I have not found a nugget with it yet!
