Great upgrade from old hiking boots!

I've been wearing some Merrell hiking boots half a size too big I bought at an REI garage sale for the past 3 years of hiking through Red Rocks Canyon, Mount Charleston, NV and Havasupai, AZ. I bought these beautiful shoes on sale in addition to my member fall discount, a much needed upgrade!
I wore these out for the first time a few days ago and the grip on sandstone is incredible! Such a huge difference. Have not tried limestone or granite but I know other climbers/hikers who wear these 24/7. They are much lighter than my clunky boots and I was able to scale boulders on the approach no problem. I wear a 7 or 7.5 and I bought a size 7. They fit great, true to size, snug but not too tight.
The color happens to math my REI day bag, didn't realize it until I paid for them. But that's a plus if you are trying to get matchy-matchy with your outdoor attire.

The only downside I've found so far to these is there isn't any protection when you roll your ankle. I am used to running/doing ballet in dirt similar to beach sand, rolling my ankle is common and I'm used to the feeling. But for those who aren't, this is something to consider if you do a lot of scrambling on uneven approaches. I did roll my ankle and it's sore, but not a deal breaker by any means.

My Feet Say Ahhhhh and Then Smile

I love these! I bought them with the intention of replacing a pair of Keen Hiking boots that I really dislike, not because of the Keen brand but I didn't like how my ankle wasn't supported well enough. I decided that I was better off not relying on the nonexisitant ankle support of the mid hiker and going for an approach shoe that had greater foot support and durablilty than my Nike trail running shoe. They arrived within 2 days of my online purchase and I've been in love. I've been wearing them to work a few days a week and there was absolutely no break in time. My only reason for 4 stars is they really don't have the greatest running design. Forgot my running showes for teh weekly fun run last week and was pretty sore in my heel and ankle area for the next few days. But since thats not what they are designed for, it's my own fault ;) Great Shoe, Thanks Five.Ten!

Awesome Traction

I love to hike. The reason I bought them is because I had lost traction and fell into a giant prickly pear cactus in the Franklin Mountains. I was with my Navy buddy and did not loose traction at all. He recommended the shoes he was wearing and told me that they made them for women too. I am more than happy with the results. The shoes are comfortable have excellent traction. I have not fallen off any mountains lately and into any cactus since. So I am very happy with my new shoes!! (Smile!) The only drawback is the shoes are a little stiff at first but they are fine once you break them in.
Libbie the adventurer! at Eastern Mountain Sports (EMS) on 07/07/2011

These shoes do what they were intended for and more! I have scrambled up super sketchy approaches on all different kinds of rock. Hiked more miles than I care for. Climbed wide cracks and alpine routes in these babies! They have saved my rear from taking some major falls. Forgot them once on a climbing trip. Was so upset I almost cried! They are a part of me when I'm out there. They have a hole in the side and the dot soles are almost completely gone, but they STILL stick and are still awesome!

redp901323 at on 11/28/2013

I got these shoes mainly for low grade climbing but they are so comfortable I wear them hiking and for every day stuff. I have a narrow foot and they fit me great! The dot rubber is the stickiest sole money can buy. :) Keep in mind however that dot rubber is not a good sole for snow/ice, but they are my go to shoe for spring/summer/fall. 5.10 lives up to it's name, it's one of my favorite pairs of shoes! AND, they're super cute.

I've had this shoe and put it through the wringer! Wear them all the time. Contrary to what most of the reviews are saying about the shoes fitting a narrow foot, I have a wide foot and they fit really well. It was so long ago that I first broke them in, it's hard for me to remember if they were ever uncomfortable. I love the dots! Solid shoe for the outdoors and mine are still in super great shape. They definitely hold up!

Super Comfortable

Very comfortable shoes. I had to put an insert in for my very high arches, but then they were great. The only drawback on these shoes is that they have black rubber soles and they leave scuffs all over the floor in the house. Take my advice: take them off before you go inside, or you will have lots of scrubbing to do! Otherwise they are perfect.

Great Shoe

These are climbing shoes that I bought because I liked the way they looked and felt. They are very comfortable and well cushioned. If used without socks they are true to size; if used with socks choose a half size up.
They come with a second set of laces in case the orange isn't your thing.
Another plus, they were on sale.
AnAnAz at REI on 12/12/2013

I would use these shoes for boulder scrambling and as a warm up climbing shoe. I might go up to a full size down if you want to use them for climbing. The C4 rubber is ammazingly sticky! Also comfy enough to wear around town. The orange laces are a great touch, but they also come with grey ones. Overall, super shoes!
whit at Rock/Creek Outfitters on 03/03/2009

I've used this shoe for almost everything. For approaches to a climb or even on Canyoneering trips. It sticks incredibly well to sandstone and granite. When when wet. When they get wet they will shrink (because it is leather) but they will stretch out as you use it.

Neutral Reviews:

These are really tight and narrow, but come to think of it, aren't all approach shoes tight and narrow? At least all the ones I've tried on are. Just a heads up these have the round dots on the sole (I only bring that up because I know some people that don't like that style tread), but like all Five Ten's they are super grippy!
