First time purchase of a GPS Device to use on a 23' Sailboat for navigation on the Great Salt Lake. I was satisfied with the different options to create way-points and plan routes, as well as view tracks for each sailing venture. I'm sure it will take some time to learn how to setup my preferences and access the different menus efficiently. To reset the trip-computer for each venture, requires at least 10 menu actions. Why why ten, why not one or two? The battery life is advertised at 18 hrs., whereas I have found 50% battery life left after tracking for only 6 hrs., during the day, w/o need to use the back-light. I do like the ability to enter all my way-points and plan new routes, review tracks and print maps using the BaseCamp Software (the owners manual is wrong, which indicates use with MapSource).

A Must Have

The Garmin 72 was on it's own the next best uppdate from my basic Etrex H. Find it very usefull and friendly when you want to return home while boating on coastal foggy days in which you hardly see your bow.

For newbies, the best way to learn how to use it properly is printing user manual while doing small sea trials along with manual testing different menus and options untill you learn how to set them all, or if preffered, the ones you need to have handy.

Best replacement for a GPS 48

The 10 year memory in my GPS48 finally gave out and the Gps 72 and GPSMAP 76 are far to complicated for my use. The GPS72H with the high sensitivity receiver and easy to use program make it the best substitute. I will say this though, if I could get a new GPS48, I would opt for it due to being familiar with it already. It would be nice but not necessary to have tides.

Cheaper was better!!!

I can see no reason to purchase a more expensive GPS.

Product is great; has many useful features and is very reliable.

Easy to use; however, read the manual.

A "must have" for any boater looking for spots offshore.

Great back up to built-in chart plotter

We use it both as a backup on the big boat and as a primary GPS on my son's Whaler. The screen is easy to read and we are very happy with this unit.

Negative Reviews:

No good as anchor drag alarm, BEWARE!

This a basic decent GPS and draws very little power. It has one major programing flaw though. In the anchor drag alarm mode if the distance is exceeded it will only beep quickly a couple of times (not very loud either) then stop. Not long enough or loud enough to wake you. The GPS 76 was this way until Garmin fixed the programming, but the GPS 76 has been discontinued unfortunately. I just contacted Garmin service by email and they confirm the current GPS 72H anchor drag is still like I described above. Very poor programming! Do not buy this unit if you want to use it for an anchor alarm to get a restful nights sleep. We've been sailing for 15 years full time and have always used Garmin GPS's, we anchor most every night so the drag alrm is important to us. If it's not important to you then this is a fine unit.

Garmin GPS 72H

Manual useless, customer service does not seem to know how the instrument works. Too many bells to go wrong.
