Ok, I bought this primarily for hiking this coming spring and summer but have used it for hunting a few times this fall. Getting the bundle is the way to go, the topo 24k loaded fast and easy for me when connecting to the pc and going to the website. I like that I can go online for updates at any time. I have a gps on my boat, and for the car, but this is the first handheld I have ever purchased. I'm impressed!, and wish I had bought one sooner. It changes the way one will hunt in the very large state parks here in upstate NY, including the Adirondacks. My old method of not getting lost in new areas, was to take a reading at the road, and know which direction to head when I wanted to get back to the road. Worked for many years, but also means sometimes coming out a mile or more from the truck. Now I can mark the truck, and look at the topo. See a nice ridge a mile in? I can go to it. If I like it when I get there, I save it for future. I can "still" hunt all day and never have to worry about where I am. I can hunt till dark far from the truck and either go back the way I came, or just tell the unit to to go to the truck. Lets face it, we all get a little nervous when its pitch dark and the coyotes are barking and we're at the beginning of a swamp in the direction to get out. Not with this unit, it gives you a comfort level I never had before. The unit picks up the satellites fast, in thick canopy, something I wasn't sure of. I would suggest anyone buying this to take the time to learn it completely before going out. I use lithium batteries and have yet to use the initial 2. I've found it nice to check it, then turn it off to save battery life. Can't wait to take it on a hike, I'll still have the TOPO map and compass with me, but hey, if the technology's out there to make it easy. Why not use it.

top notch

I bought this unit 2 years ago to upgrade from an old GPS. The technology in these newer units compared to what I was used to is amazing. It locks up the Signal quickly and NEVER loses it under any conditions. Easy to use and navigate through the menus even for someone as non tech savvy as myself. The topo map is very helpful and I have found some great hunting spots because of it. I have come to rely heavily on cabelas reviews before buying more expensive items and recommend this unit highly. After 2 years of hard use this unit still looks and works like new. Definitely one of my better purchases.

Know where you are

Easy to use...and love the detail on where I am. Had features I didn't know it had: travel log is far you traveled, avg speed, time you were moving, time you were not moving. Waypoints easy to set and label. I also loaded in the regional maps and knew exactly whose land I was on and who was next door. I was far back in national forest and it even showed old logging roads long since discarded. I think this is a must have for anyone who does any public land hunting and wants to wander off road with confidence.

The gps it's self seams ok, but the soft wear included with the bundle is the Pitts. The Birdseye download takes forever.. The 24k topo maps is ok but not great. The available private property maps are way over priced
