Garmin Rino 610 GPS Radio -

You already know that a GPS can be a full-fledged life saver, but what if you're trying to coordinate multiple people or groups? With the Garmin Rino 610 GPS radio, it's no big deal. The tracking feature allows you to track the locations of other Rino users in your area, and share your location with them. The radio feature means that getting ahold of them is a breeze, and you can send text messages as well. It all adds up to a convenient way to keep tabs on everyone in your party.

Tucked into the durable body is a 2.6 inch, glove friendly, backlit color screen, which is easily visible in all light conditions. In addition to the included worldwide basemap, you can load the Rino with TOPO 24k maps, BlueChart marine maps, and CityNavigator maps, and Custom Maps via the MicroSD port. If you still need more information, you can download BirdsEye satellite images, and overlay them on your map. Waypoints can be selected off of the mapping feature, or by importing them wirelessly from compatible devices. It's easy to save, modify, and index your routes for future trips. By downloading a geocaching .GPX file, you'll have access to hidden caches, for more options on your next outing. And you're able to select the profile of your trip, which helps you to organize your information between recreation, driving, boating, and training.

The GPS features alone make the Rino a worthy companion, but it’s the communication features that really set it apart. The included software allows you to track other Rino users in the area, making it easy to keep tabs on your friends. The radio feature makes it easy to stay in touch, and you also have the option of sending and receiving text messages if you'd prefer. By using both GPS and GLONASS satellites, the Rino is able to determine your location 20% faster than GPS alone, and maintain it with greater precision. To ensure that your information is presented in a way that works for you, the dashboard is customizable with a compass, digital altimeter, and configurable data fields, among other tools.

The Garmin Rino 610 GPS is available in the color Black, and includes a USB cable, and user manual.

Positive Reviews:

Feature packed. Very easy to use the basics

Am very pleased with this Garmin. I'd rate it a full 5/5 if the more advanced features were a bit easier to use and/or if the help screens were any good. It does not seem that Garmin did much user based design, or, if they did, they used very experienced power users, not newbies or people stepping up from simpler GPS's. The touch screen is OK and the PC software is also very useful. Following. and creating trails is easy as is using waypoints. I'd like to see a social feature so I can optionally share waypoints and paths via social media - seems like a no brainer but again it appears like Garmin is not very customer focused yet. When my son gets older and joins me in the woods more often, I will buy him a unit like this as well so we can communicate easier and see each other's positions.

I like it

We have a few of the older models and I find the touch screen lots easier to use. Very quick to mark and name waypoints. Being able to track my son and dad's location is awesome. And being able to identify that this finger ridge is not the one that dumps me out at my truck saves lots of steps...

Negative Reviews:

plastic paperweight

I purchased the 610 for a hunting trip. i opened it only to find it was useless for hunting unless you downloaded a VERY expensive map program. Why dont they just charge extra money upfront and have it on there as a standard feature. There was nothing in the description that said it would need the map update to work. It said there was a base map. This base map consists of topo shading when zoomed to 2 miles. Anything closer than that and the map is a blue dot (you) on a white screen (the world). no roads, no elevation, no streams, nothing. The 610 is pretty much a useless expensive paperweight.

RINO 610 a step backwards for Garmin

Only transmits up to 1W vs. the 530HCX at 5W? USGS Map download into the 610 does not allow SD card, memory is built in and a CD is required. The map tracks are too thick on the display. The lithium ION battery back does not work with this unit. All of these features are in the older model 530HCX but not in the newer 610 model.
