Garmin eTrex 20 Bundle

I bought the GarminTrex 20 GPS to avoid getting lost when walking in Europe on vacation. I got the bundle since all items could be used to familiarize myself with the eTrex 20 before leaving. The large US topographic map in the bundle includes Hawaii and is on a micro SD card. The level of detail is much greater than the built in base map, and goes a long way toward making the eTrex 20 usable on a daily basis. The unit will show on-going changes in location when carried at a walking pace. The map was dated January 2010 and a more recent map would be an improvement. The shortfall in the bundle is the lack of any detailed instructions on how to set up and use the individual features of the eTrex 20, and how to install the micro SD card map. I used the internet extensively to get a basic understanding of how to use the capabilities built into the eTrex 20 and advice from a friend who owns a Garmin GPS Map 62. After 2 weeks, I am slowly learning how to use it. The bundle was worth buying, and would be even better if detailed instructions and a newer map were included.

Excellent unit for ATV use.

Picked up this GPS for my ATV. Quite happy with it so far. Construction is solid and the color screen is nice. The menus do take some getting used to though. You probably will want to load some topographic type maps if you are going to be biking or off-roading. You can find some free websites that have these available. Make sure to also download the free Basecamp software from the Garmin website so you can load them up. Some others have reported an issue with the map not updating when moving at slow speeds but I have not seen that problem on my particular unit. Just update the firmware if you have that problem.

Good GPS for My Needs

I determined that I don't need all the sophistication that goes with the more advanced Garmin models. On a recent hiking trip to the North Dakota Badlands I found the e-trex 20 to be more than adequate. The screen size is not too small or hard to read. An occasional rain shower had no effect. Basic features were easy to use. I need to read some more on using this GPS, but I feel it will certainly satisfy my needs in the future. The bundle makes it an excellent buy because of the US TOPO map, case, and clip -- all items that are needed.

Great product

This is a great hand-held GPS for the casual hiker. The best features are the stats: time moving, distance hiked, average speed, time to sunset, etc. It even provides the heading and elevation based on the satelite signal. The screen is a little small, so reading the maps is not that easy. The toggle button makes it easy to scroll through the menus. The unit may need to be on a lanyard to maintain contact with the satelites, so I would not put it in your backpack while in use.

Hard to operate

I have had the e trex out for four outings so far. One set of AA's lasted through three hikes. It is loaded with features, stopwatch, calculator, determine the area, but only has a few buttons... difficult to use. I still can't get to see the maps of any of the hikes I have archived displayed on my computer.

Wise purchase

Once I was able to work with the gps it was easy to understand. I also purchase the Calif version of the hunting gps map for Calif. it is very detailed and helps find public land and hunting boundaries.

Great GPS

Great GPS, I use it with the 24k topo maps. I use it mostly for hiking and hunting, the way points are amazing and let me easily navigate back to views, tree stands, etc

Don't expect a Topo Map experience right

Topo maps cost 1/2 the price of the unit!
I expected to use my new etrex 20 for hiking right out of the box which the adds tend to indicate.
