| I've used the Garmin 405cx for a month. I knew that I wanted a new heart rate monitor and the GPS in this device was a bonus. I like: - that you can customize the training screens to show whatever you want. For instance, *I* decided that I wanted the calories as the main display with distance and hr in the sub-display. - that I can see where I've been in google earth. It's a little gimicky but fun to look at especially after I've done a new hiking route. - that there are a couple of alternative (and free) applications to view/slice/review the data. Most notably SportTracks. - that the watch looks like a watch. Not a netbook on my arm. I don't like: - the touch bezel which is finicky with moisture. If you aren't sure then wet your hands with water and try it out in the store. - the elevation metering seems inaccurate. I work out in the gym and it has been registering >1000 feet in elevation gain. I see a similar inaccuracy sometimes when hiking routes along cliff faces and gorges. I guess the gps doesn't know if I'm at the top/middle/bottom of the valley wall. - the power charging clip. It's okay but a little clunky. When it's clipped on, the watch wants to lay on its face which I suspect will lead to some scratches and scuffs. I wish: - Garmin's PC training software was as robust as SportTracks. The plugins and open API seem to make ST a lot more robust and extensible. - the 'Return to Location' feature was a breadcrumb type where I could backtrack along my original route out. - the screen material was not plastic. To prevent scratches, I've coated it with a screen protector film for a mobile device. Just extra hassle. - the watch came in another color like black or dark gray. Overall I think this is a very good product if you are a outdoor and fitness person. Having a viewable data is pretty interesting especially if you like to know how your performance is per lap/mile and during climbs. | |

| Initial set up took less than 10min and the learning curve is low for most people used to todays gadget laced world. There are two software options to chose from. The stand alone Garmin Training Center and the web based Connect.Garmin.com(will replace [@]) The stand alone software needs significant user interface upgrade. There are no maps included with Training Center, you need to own Topo to create routes at home or run/cycle the route first and then modify it later. It has many workout templates that can be modified to create a variety of training programs. Garmin is however migrating its MotionBased.com site to the new Connect.Garmin.com site. As of this review the site also needed some minor improvements, mainly the ability to create advanced workouts, which Garmin says will be implemented in time as Motionbased.com is migrated over. The user interface is much smother than the stand alone software which is a modified version of Garmin's existing software made for early hand held GPS devices which has never been given a face lift. The user interface of the wrist unit is still the same but the sensitivity has improved over the original 405. However the 405cx may still aggravate those who sweat intensely or are looking for multi-sport triathlon waterproofing. The new 310xt may soon fill that slot for Garmin. Heart rate bands from other popular manufactures will not work with the wrist unit. | |
