Garmin Montana 600 GPS -

The Garmin Montana 600 has become something of a staple for adventurous outdoors people. One look at its generous 4 inch screen and rugged body will expose one of the main reasons-- these things are ready to be put through the ringer. The worldwide basemap can be overlaid with a handful of different map options to give you all the information you need to get to your destination. Your routes and waypoints can be shared wirelessly with other Garmin GPS users. Plus, it's proven to be a reliable way to pinpoint your location, even in areas where lesser units lose their bearings.

Tucked into the durable body is a large 4 inch, glove friendly, backlit color screen, which is easily visible in both low and high light. In addition to the included worldwide basemap, you can load the Montana with TOPO 24k maps, BlueChart marine maps, and CityNavigator maps, and Custom Maps via the MicroSD port. If you still need more information, you can download BirdsEye satellite images, and overlay them on your map. Waypoints can be selected off of the mapping feature, or by importing them wirelessly from compatible devices. It's easy to save, modify, and index your routes for future trips. Your waypoints and routes can be shared wirelessly with other users of compatible Garmin GPS devices. By downloading a geocaching .GPX file, you'll have access to hidden caches, for more options on your next outing. And you're able to select the profile of your trip, which helps you to organize your information between recreation, driving, boating, and training.

By using both GPS and HotFix technology, the Montana is able to determine and maintain your location, even in deep canyons and around tall buildings. To ensure that your information is presented in a way that works for you, the dashboard is customizable with a 3d compass, barometric altimeter, and configurable data fields, among other tools. It's compatible with a number of aftermarket mounts, making it highly adaptable to nearly any outdoor activity. And it's helpful that you have the option to power the Montana via the included rechargeable lithium ion batteries, or using standard AAs.

The Garmin Montana 600 GPS is available in the color Black, and includes a USB cable, lithium ion battery back, AC charger, and user manual.

Garmin Montana 600 GPS Reviews:

True love at last!

I am an avid paddler who loves to explore new waterways by Kayak. The Jacksonville, Florida area is a paddlers's paradise with an abundance of lakes, creeks, as well as the St. John's River, the Intracoastal Waterway and Atlantic Ocean. A handheld GPS is essential in planning and tracking adventures on the water.

Before I bought the GARMIN Montana 600, I had spent a lot of money and wasted a lot of time using other devices. The GARMIN Montana 600 is the first unit that lives up to its description and my expectations for a convenient and dependable on-water guide. The screen size and clarity, touchscreen input, and downloadable (by subscription ) satellite photos combine to make this waterproof navigation device perfect for my purposes.

When I called tech support on an unrelated matter, they informed me that although waterproof, the GARMIN Montana 600 should not be exposed to salt water. No problem! The touchscreen works perfectly through a waterproof bag.

The only con is the expense of the device, especially considering that it does not come with loaded maps.

great GPS receiver

I bought the Montana about a month ago. I wanted a larger screen than most GPS units seem to offer, and the 4-inch diagonal screen of the Montana is great. I didn't want a built-in camera or 100k topo maps, I bought the 24k topo maps for my region at a reasonable price on the Internet, and they are fine. I also got the Birdseye subscription and downloaded one small image of my neighborhood, and it was a very fast download (contrary to some reviews I have read). I also got a bike mount that lets me use the Montana when riding my bike; it also works great. I do wish there was a comprehensive printed manual available describing all of the Montana's features, and how to use them. The Internet does have lots of info about it, including wikis, but I prefer a large printed manual I can read at my leisure. It is a powerful unit with lots of great features, and the performance is terrific. I'm looking forward to taking it on hikes in national parks and forests.

I just got this GPS a few days ago but figured it all out in an hour. Very easy to use and many nice features. The only part I didn't like and I was told this before I bought it is that the base map is very basic. If you want to see things more clearly you need to purchase additional maps. The birds eye view maps are really cheap but awesome. Keep in mind as GPS's warn do not use this as a primary source for navigation that will only get you in trouble. But if you know where your gone and use it as a refrence when its dark or foggy its an awesome tool. I also use mine to scout out new ponds on giant public swamps around home.

Garmin Montana

Used it on a trip to canada with Topo maps. Had one issue where it would keep rebooting the entire trip, seemed the battery was overheating. Hasnt had the problem since though. Dont like that you cant use a standard USB to power while driving in auto, must use their automotive adapter to view the screen. All in all a good all around unit, for atv, auto, boat. Not too bulky, good screen size to read while traveling
