Great for Geocaching

I bought the 550 for my parents. They do a lot of Geocaching and they already have several brands and types of gps devices. They were having to manual load each cache into the gps, then after finding it they would have to type their find into the computer. We sat down with the 550 and were able to download caches directly to the gps via a USB connection. We went and found the caches, logged them on the gps, made comments, etc., then were able to upload them directly back to the computer. It saved a lot of time and effort. They also liked the compass which none of their other units had. My dad liked that he could go back and forth from the map to a large directional arrow while searching for a geocache location. Geocaching is just one of the features. This unit would be great for hunting, hiking, or any outdoor activity. Detailed topo maps can be downloaded.

Negative Reviews:

Some good, some glaring probelms

I bought this to replace a 60csx that was wrecked by a burst battery. The Good The screen is very nice, and the gimmicky camera is at least with you and takes fair pictures. Interface seems easy, somewhat different than what I am used to, but easy to learn. The unit is a good size for hauling around in a shirt pocket and the caribiner clip us a nice touch. The not as good Battery life is okay if it is warm, but in cold temps you need lithium batteries or quite a few extras. Battery life seems to be a backward slip with the new touchscreens compared to the 60c and 60csx I have used a lot. The bad I use mapsource a lot for managing waypoints and tracks. This unit does not work well with mapsource. Garmin came up with some new Basecamp program that you can use(have to use!) for retirieving waypoints. I use this unit for work, and adding extra steps to get data out of and into this unit is a deal breaker. If all you do is store data on the unit, you will be fine. This is such a big deal to me that it has made it unusable and I have to replace it with something that works completely with mapsource.

not worth the high price

I purchased this to be used for hunting and on the water ,I have found it to be very quirky and slow.many times it will upon changing zoom level just show a partial map set.it is a very frustrating experience. I think this GPS was released before they had all the bugs worked out. I hate it!
