Gerber EVO Junior Fine-Edge Locking Knife Reviews:

Dependable and Sharp!

This knife lives up to the Gerber name! I got it cheaper somewhere else and I had my doubts about it, then as I used it, it proved itself to be a very good knife. I brought to Okinawa on a Scout trip and it performed splendidly. My coating did not come off and it stayed sharp even though I use it to shave wood everyday.

The only thing that is a cause for concern is the grip. The finger guard does its job, but it isn't that comfortable after use for long periods at a time. This is also a horrible knife for survival or hunting since it is so small. I would recomend this knife to any scout that is starting to use knives.

Impressed

I got this product about 1.5 yrs ago. I have used this knife for everything! I skinned and quartered a 70lb feral pig with this knife alone on a hunting trip and it was still very sharp in the end. I then went to work in West Africa and I brought this knife and a Leatherman with me into the rainforest. I never used the Leatherman. I tied the knife to a thick branch and made a home-made Hawaiian sling for spear fishing which worked and used it to hack down vines and saplings when building a base camp for our research it remained sharp. Needless to say the blade is pretty nicked up but still serviceable. Definitely buying another when I head to the field again.

So nice, I bought it twice.

This is my go-to knife. It is always clipped to my pocket or in my hand. A few weeks ago I lost it. Searched everywhere at work and at home. I was heartbroken when I couldn't find it; forced to use inferior knives or *gasp* scissors. I knew the only way to find it was to buy another one. Sure enough, the day after I placed my order I found it. Getting in my car, I tried to adjust the seat and something was jamming the track....
Oh happy and joyous day!
So when the new knife arrived, I took it to the local REI and traded it for a Flash 18 day-pack.
Things happen for a reason!

Perfect Knife

This is the best knife I ever had (I have not had that many though). I have small hands but it fits me perfectly as if it was custom made. It feels like a more expensive knife but it is so inexpensive. Now this isn't perfect...I have dropped it several times and it has lost a little bit of coating, but I like it a lot.

Perfect Size

Just the right size for my hands. Gerber is one of the best knives I own. This knife has two 1-handed way to open. The thumb and the forefinger. The width of the blade also allows me to stash it in my pocket and still allow me to dig for change, keys , and the like without being an obstruction.

One of the Best!

This knife is definately one of my favorites. I use it every day for some of my toughest jobs. The easy to use finger flip enables you to open it with one hand easily, and the treaded linerlock feature allows easy closing, even if it does scratch your thumb a bit. The serrated blade is just as good. Buy it!

Great Knife!!

I have this knife and it's full sized brother. I keep this one in my field pack for work. It's great for all kinds of little cutting jobs. It's just a great little knife, hands down. You can't go wrong with this thing.

Great knife.

I'm on my second Evo Jr. (lost the first one), and I'd buy another in a heartbeat. Always handy, useful, and easy to use. Works and cuts just as well now as it did several months ago when I bought it.

Love It

I'm not a knife person, but this thing is wonderful. Super sharp, durable, easy and quick to use, and small. Perfect for any use you can think of.

Great first whittling knife

Got two of these guys for my nine-year old cub scouts. Straight-edge blade is perfect for whittling. Great first knife.

Negative Reviews:

Gave up on this knife

The thumb studs break or unscrew themselves. This negates the blade locking as those studs help to lock the blade as well as help in opening. This happened to me twice with this model.
I was delighted with the feel, size, convenience and razor sharp blade. Under hard use like stripping electric wire sheath, shaving down tool handles, etc. it just did not hold up.
REI was very good about replacing the first one and issuing a store credit for the second one. If I could have figured a way to use the knife without the thumb studs I would have kept it.
It is a very good product for the price. I need a more rugged product.

Not Worth it

The knife has a nice weight and blade to it. My main problem is with the thumb studs. The stick out past the body of the knife and are rough at the top . That makes hard to get in and out of my pocket. I removed the studs and smoothed them down.
pdxguy503 at REI on 05/05/2013

looks great lousy blade

everything about this knife is perfect except it will not hold an edge. That is of course their most important thing in a knife. I have 3 dollar knives that are much better blades than this. It almost seems to be a Chinese knock off of a gerber

Blade Wouldn't Take an Edge

This blade was not sharp out of the packaging and I couldn't get a decent edge on it.

Neutral Reviews:

Okay for the price

I use this knife for every day carry, especially at work and in situations when I want a small knife that will not be cumbersome to carry.

It is a very lightweight knife and small yet sturdy. Be careful if you decide to remove the pocket clip. One of the torx screws stripped with the slightest turn of mine, so I guess my pocket clip will remain on it.

The top finger flipper opens the knife fairly well but the thumb studs are positioned too far forward to open the knife one handed with them. The knife is also very difficult to close one-handed.

Overall, if your willing to spend even $10 more you may find a better small pocket knife.

Good, not great

I use this for a backpacking knife. It works ok, but was dull upon arrival.

Pros:
Can open & shut easily with 1 hand.

Cons:
1. the blade is very dull upon arrival:
- I bought a Spyderco ladybug straight blade (0.6 oz), & it came shaving sharp on arrival. The Spyderco drawback, is it can't be CLOSED one handed, & there's no pocket clip.
2. This Gerber, will cut your food, but was unimpressed with the sharpness.

Still looking for a knife that has all the features, light/ open-close with 1 hand/ shaving sharp on arrival.
