Giro Savant -
Giro Savant Helmet 2014.
Boasting authentic style and performance, the Savant is an excellent road helmet for riders who are price-conscious but don't want to sacrifice performance or safety. The Savant doesn't cost as much as Giro's high-end models, but it's built around the same basic technologies that make a Giro helmet unique.
Giro's In-Mold construction process fuses the helmet's outer shell with its impact-absorbing EPS liner during the molding process, making the liner literally a part of the helmet. This process reinforces areas around vents and ribs, creating a one-piece exoskeleton that allows the helmet to be lighter, more durable, and better ventilated than traditional designs. The proprietary Wind Tunnelâ„¢ ventilation system, combines active vents with internal exhaust channels that thrust cool, fresh air over and around the riders head-while forcing heat and stale air out. The significant increase in air ventilation gives you an advantage on tough climbs and when the weather gets hot. Giro spent two years fine tuning the Roc Loc fit system to bring you Roc Loc 5, a groundbreaking fit system with an unmatched level of comfort, stability, adjustability, and weight savings. With Roc Loc 5, you can easily dial-in both fit tension and adjust vertical position with a single hand. Twist the ratcheting, micro-adjusting dial for a tighter fit on rough terrain, and back it off a bit and relax across the flats or a warm climb. A three-position bracket allows for 15 millimeters of up/down movement for easy fine-tuning of vertical positions. Even with these impressive features, Roc Loc 5 is 40 percent lighter than its popular predecessor, Roc Loc 4.

Giro Savant Reviews:

Positive Reviews:

I must admit, when I first got the helmet I thought the strap design was awkward. Rather than fitting flush with your face, there is clumsy strap design that makes a half twist under both ears. Why they did that I have no idea? My best guess is that it's the only feature that separates the Savant from far more expensive helmets. I was truly worried that this would be uncomfortable on long rides but this is just not the case. On rides I basically forget I'm wearing the Savant. I certainly don't think about the strap. The helmet is super lightweight, well-vented and comfortable. I got the white and silver model since it won't heat up from the hot summer sun like a black helmet does. Having various sized helmets also means a better fit than a one size fits all design. From the research I did at the time of purchase I could not find another helmet this light at this price point.

The Savant is an extremely light helmet and offers good protection. The Matte Black finish matches my bike:) The fitting system enables you to put the helmet on your head, turn the dial to your size, and you're set. I also like the ability to take the foam cushions out of the helmet and clean them.

After wrecking and cracking my Ionos, I wanted to find a cheaper replacement. The Savant is a perfect alternative. The fit is very similar, and the vents are nearly the same. Oakley Radars fit in the vents the same too.
Great alternative for 1/3rd the price.

Great helmet

This helmet does everything I need. It is not dorky looking but doesn't break the bank. An excellent value especially if you trust and favor Giro helmets as I do.

Fits perfectly to my shape. Great helmet for the price. Vents on helmet are good and kept me cool for the century ride at Sea Otter Classic.

Negative Reviews:

This helmet seemed so promising. It offers great bang for the buck. Super light. The finish is a nice matte instead of the more common glossy finish on other helmets that I really like. The Roc Loc 5 adjusts up and down, a feature usually only found in higher end helmets and perfect if you have a longer head like me. The only real problem is the straps. The straps are stiff and scratchy and don't lie flat against your head. The material seems like a coarser grade nylon than is usually used in every other helmet I have seen or owned. The problem is that you have to have that touching your face and neck for extended periods of time and with this coarse grade, stiff material it's going to chaff and be very uncomfortable. Sadly this blew it for me and I had to return it.
