Giro XAR Helmet -

It's not that road helmets are substantially less durable than helmets made for mountain biking, it's just that the three-way balance between ventilation, weight, and durability is readjusted for off-road purposes. The Giro Xar Helmet gets the same expert engineering found in the top-line road helmets. That means the same In-Mold process that make Giro road helmets some of the strongest and lightest on the market is also used for the Xar. The In-Mold construction process fuses the outer shell to the EPS foam liner. This process enhances the effectiveness of both parts. In fact, the fusion process actually reinforces those formerly vulnerable spots around the vents and ribs. It makes them lighter, more durable, and better ventilated than helmets with shells that are glued to the liner.

Where the Xar differs slightly from the road helmets is in the focus placed on the ventilation. With 17 Wind Tunnel vents and internal channeling, Giro has hardly skimped on ventilation, it's just that by reducing the number and size of the vents, slightly more emphasis has been put on durability. You'll also have the benefit of the P.O.V. visor to deflect the sun, rain, and twigs. The visor has a patented internal clutch system that allows for 15 degrees of vertical adjustment without the need for any tools; just give it a quick whack with your hand. And if you'd rather not have it on at all, you can easily remove it without tools.

Giro's development of the Roc Loc 5 Fit System makes it possible micro-adjust your helmet on the fly, with just one hand. Though other helmet manufacturers have similar adjustability options, none of them even come close to the weight savings that the Roc Loc system offers: it is almost 40% lighter than comparable systems.

The Giro Xar Helmet comes in Small, Medium and Large. It is available in Matte Black/Grey Bars, Matte White/Grey Bars and Black/Cyan/Lime.

  • In-mold construction fuses a durable polycarbonate outer with the helmet's impact-absorbing foam liner to provide better ventilation in a lighter package
  • A web of tough, stiff and lightweight nylon is molded within helmet to provide an extra measure of strength and integrity

  • Roc Loc 5 retention system makes adjusting fit tension and vertical position easy and comfortable; loosen/tighten with a simple twist
  • RocLoc 5 provides a comfortable fit with unrivaled adjustability (easily adjust vertical and horizontal positioning), stability, and weight savings

  • Removable and machine washable X-static® pads offer antimicrobial properties to deter odor development

  • Seventeen wind tunnel vents provide internal channeling to keep your dome cool
  • 17 vents work in conjunction with internal exhaust channels to thrust cool, fresh air over and around head while moving heat and stale air out

  • Suggested uses inlcude all-mountain and trail riding, endurace/marathon XC riding or Super D
  • Visor on the Giro Xar helmet offers 15° of vertical adjustment

Giro XAR Helmet Reviews:

A flashy, comfortable, excellent helmet

After wearing an Atmos for the past five years, I decided to switch it up and migrate to the Mountain side of life.

This helmet has been a delight so far. The fit, as has long been my experience with Giro lids, is great, and the changes they've made in the RocLoc system seem to be good ones. The helmet is the most comfortable I've ever worn, the internal pads are robust and cushy, and I dig the wild color options.

I can't speak to the trail worthiness of the helmet, as I use it primarily for urban riding, bike commuting and road cycling. That said, it's been great for all of those endeavors, and I'm supremely happy with my purchase.

I just replaced my Fox Flux helmet which for years has served me well. I was hesitant to switch back to Giro specifically because of the fit. The Xar is by far the best mtn biking helmet out there now. The one finger adjustment in the back is perfect. Simple dial in adjustment. Plenty of vents for airflow. Durability (I already crashed) is sound. It looks great, feels good. Antimicrobacterial padding is a plus. Visor is adjustable. I look forward to many epic rides with this helmet and know my head is protected.

Likely Saved My Life!!

This helmet likely saved my life 2 days ago. As I write this review, I am still in the hospital with a broken back, but my head on has abrasions despite being hit by a car and going through the windshield. My head hit something hard while I was on my way through the windshield because there is damage 4 inches in diameter extending about 3/4 inch into the helmet foam. The total helmet system seemed to absorb a lot of the energy which likely contributed to saving my neck etc.

Bought this helmet around 6 months ago. I ride around 50-60 miles per week, mostly on road and some off, and this helmet is one of the best I have ever worn. Love the fit and the antimicrobial & machine washable padding is a definite plus. The Roc Loc adjustment is simple, fast, and makes the helmet extremely customizable. It is fairly light weight, and the vents seem to be well placed and allow a good amount of cooling air into the helmet. Extremely happy with this helmet!

Really like the helmet. Vents well, excellent adjustability, and good airflow and coverage. My only gripe is that Giro is been adding minimal padding to their helemts lately. They're comfy to wear, but soak up almost no sweat. I am extra sweaty and maybe the improved airflow prevents this issue for most people, but I end up using a bandana or sweat band. Seems like that's where all helmets are headed. So with that in mind, this ia a five star choice.

Bought my Xar helmet in exchange for a 661 helmet that I had previously purchased and didn't like. This helmet is one of the most comfortable helmets I have ever owned. I would highly recommend this helmet to anyone looking for a helmet that is really comfortable and a great fit.

This is my first high end helmet so I may be biased... but its a great helmet! It moves a lot of air so I dont really sweat, I bonked my head on a tree and it didnt even dent and everyone sees me and my bright yellow helmet.

My head shape fits well with this helmet, have had a few over the years from giro. Easy strap set up. Rocloc is nice. Would like more vents, but the ones with more look less appealing. Use it for mtb so I like the visor. Weight is ok.

This is my second Giro helmet for mountain biking. It fits great (minimal movement while on), and keeps my head cool. The "RocLoc"makes adjustment super easy, and the visor stays in place. Highly recommend this helmet, and am a big fan of Giro gear.
