Every time that GoPro launches a new generation of cameras, we're left confronting the age-old adage, how do you improve on perfection? Well, how about reducing housing size and weight by 20%, reducing distortion by 33%, speeding up Wi-Fi, a SuperView mode, and increasing battery life by 25%? We thought that would get your attention.
For the HERO3+ Black Edition - Adventure, GoPro reduced in size and weight of the camera by 20% in comparison to the old HERO3, and the camera weight was reduced by 25%. In fact, the HERO3+ tips the scales around 2.08 ounces. The camera body has retained the black backing treatment and the progressive user interface at the front. Additionally, the lighter housing boasts an impressive waterproofing, 131ft/40m.
As with the HERO3, the HERO3+ continues the use of what GoPro calls a six-element aspherical lens. What does this mean? Simply put, the lens has been designed to operate evenly across more light conditions than ever before. For the camera nerds: it's an f/2.8-6.0 lens. So, you'll experience sharper image quality whether it's blisteringly bright or the sun has nearly disappeared. The lens also allows Ultra-wide, Medium, and Narrow field of view modes, and you can operate the White Balance in either auto or manual modes (3000k, 5500k, 6500k, Cam Raw). Now, you're able to expect crystal clear resolution from sunrise to sunset. Possibly more important for your mounted shots, the lens has made huge gains in decreasing distortion. In fact, GoPro asserts that the new iteration of the HERO3 improves reduces distortion by 33%. And as an added perk, image sharpness has been enhanced by 33%, as well.
And speaking of resolution, the HERO3+ Black Edition boasts ultra-high resolution video modes of 4Kp15, 2.7Kp30, 1440p48, 1080p60, 960p100 and 720p120 fps. Basically, if you love slow-motion shots, the HERO3+ is a godsend. And did we mention that all of these rates can be run from Ultra-Wide mode? Awesome. And new to this model, GoPro has added its SuperView video mode to capture video with a more vivid wide angle perspective. Further along the lines of improvement, the HERO3+'s new Auto Low Light feature automatically adjusts the frame rate for an enhanced quality in low-light conditions.
For time lapse, the Hero3+ features seven lapse intervals ranging from 0.5 to 60 seconds. And like the HERO3, this model still mode shoots at 12 megapixels and up to 30 photos per second. You're able to select blasts of 3, 5, or 10 photos-per-second concurrently with any video mode. You also retain camera settings like looping video, continuous photo, and Protune Mode.
Not to be one sided in the improvement department, the HERO3+ also made dramatic gains in sound quality. By engineering a new wind-noise reduction system, the redesigned sound recording will capture all of the subtleties and profanities of your gnar. And now, you also have the option of recording your sound in Mono, 48kHz, and AAC compression w/AGC media formats. This means you don't have to eat up your cards' storage if ambient sound is only going to make a cameo in your edit.
The HERO3+ is not only Wi-Fi ready, but GoPro has gone to great lengths to increase its operations speed.but included for this package, at a $79.99 value, is the Wi-Fi Remote. The new go pro is about more than just the camera. It is about the whole package! This is especially true when you consider the free software you get from Go Pro, which is the awesome and easy to use GoPro Studio 2.0 Edit Software. You will need a fast computer to run your high resolution/ high frames per second clips. The computer I am running this software on has an older GPU (a 9800 GT with one Gig of dedicated ram). I have noticed other video programs on my computer lag the raw GoPro footage, while the GoPro Studio 2.0 seamlessly plays the video without any lag. This is extremely valuable for low budget editors like me. Even if you are using programs like FCP, It would be a good idea to pull out the maximum FPS from Modes like the 720p 120 FPS in GoPro Studio 2.0, and transfer the lengthened footage to your other editing program. What this does is prevent you from losing valuable "between" clips you might want to use for later, and prevent you from losing it after your Vimeo upload is choppy and interlaced. I have also noticed a few upgrades from my original HD Hero. Number One! No more sifting through preview clips that always start with fisheye views of you and your friend's snotty faces. This is made possible because there is now a blinking red recording light on the front and the back of this new GoPro. So you don't have to point the camera at your face to see if the recording light is blinking. The second feature I noticed was the up-graded clip, which closes the water proof GoPro case. I really appreciated this because I have had the clip pop off while working with my old GoPro, in the middle of the Gallery at Snowbird aka "A bad place to drop anything". I am very happy with my new GoPro and I am testing and learning new things about it every day!
The Hero3+ Black is hands down the best camera in its class. Photos and video are noticeably sharper than the Hero3 Black, battery life is longer, the wifi is faster, low light shooting works better, and the continuous photo mode is one of my favorite new features. With continuous photo, you can change the number of frames per second you choose to shoot (1,3, or 10 I believe), and then you can hold down the record button for up to 30 seconds and capture action the entire time.
Camera aside, the GoPro App and GoPro Studio 2.0 give tremendous support.
Favorite features on the App:
Being able to change all the camera's settings and modes on one screen.
Saving photos or videos to your camera roll and instantly uploading to insta.
Being able to see what the camera is seeing.
Remotely hitting record.
GoPro Studio 2.0- An easy to use editing platform.
Studio "speaks GoPro," which means video playback is easier and more continuous than just watching it straight off your drive.
Selecting ins and outs and exporting just the parts of your clips that you want.
Full resolution screen grabs is a big bonus- maybe you didn't stomp that 60 footer and ruined the video... just export the sickest frame, and count it!
I see a lot of complaints about people's cameras being glitchy (not on the Hero3+), and have found that as long as my firmware is the most recent version, I have zero problems.
I've owned a gopro HD camera and seen my friends gopros and if you're a filmaker looking too get unique shots then ya get one for sure. however... this is going out too almost every kid out there on their birthday. dont waste your money. the footage you see on go pro sites have all been professionally edited by filmmakers too make them look that good. I see so many kids rocking go pros anymore that there not even cool anymore. just save that $400 and go on a cat skiing trip with your friends, or buy astro turf for summer shredding, buy a new board, save it.
if you're one of those people like no i want to film sick parts with my friends you're better off buying a camcorder with a bubble lens or 35mm, buying a used dslr for $400 which takes amazing photos and videos and are way more versatile. Gopro is makes the best wearable action cam on the market. so if you want a POV this is the one you want.
The Hero 3+ is a good step up from previous models. I have tons to say about it, but I'll keep it short and just list my favorite improvements and features of this camera:
-The lens is slightly bigger than the regular Hero 3 black. This increased the sharpness of the image quality a fair bit.
-Audio recording has been improved
-It is much smaller and lighter than ever
-The battery length is 25% longer than the Hero 3 black
-It is only slightly delayed (maybe 1/4 of a second) on the live preview on the GoPro app compared to about 3-4 seconds on the hero 3 black.
These are my favorite features of the 3+ black. I have been using GoPros for several years and they just continue to get better. I am a cinematographer and use these all the time, so if you have any specific questions for me, don't hesitate to ask!
GoPro 3+ Black destroys it! The updated software and lens produce crystal clear high resolution footage and photos. Its my opinion this is the best fisheye set up for filming skateboarding and snowboarding under $2000 hands down. At $400 it is a steal. You can watch live or replay clips from your phone or tablet which makes getting the shot super easy. It also has the "Pro Settings" that you can activate which allow you to color correct and adjust contrast and sharpness giving you that professional cinematography look. I prefer to stay out of those particular setting because it films so good in auto. White balance and Low light are both greatly improved over previous models. Super durable too.
I just got the 3+ black edition and haven't had a chance to play around with it too much. This is sadly my first GoPro that I've owned, so I can't compare to previous editions. The reason I went with a GoPro is the size and versatility of it. I can take it anywhere in virtually any weather or environmental condition and still get great video and photo results. If you want something versatile then this is for you. Save your money on the other ones and just get the black, the features are well worth the extra chunk of change.
This camera is incredible! It's sooo small you can just stash it in your pocket. The video and picture quality is really good, with many formatting options to suit your conditions. When edited and exported correctly it will look just as good as most dslr footage.
And the huge thing I love is the convenience of the wifi. Being able to use your phone to review something on the lift, play with settings, export a pic or clip to your phone, etc. is awesome.
I've been using go pro's as my primary action sports camera for years now and i have to say they are making strides. The 3 plus is incredibly small/light and has specs that no one can touch. The bugs from the 3 seem to be non-existent in the new model, no more missed shots! I use this for skydiving and many other sports and I'd be lying if i didn't say I am a customer for life! All hail king Go-pro!
