Gregory Z40 Pack Reviews:

Positive Reviews:

Great pack!

This is my first technical hiking pack, and so far it has been excellent. It came highly recommended by an employee while I was browsing the selection at the West Lebabon, NH store. He took the time to cover all of the features and make sure it fit me properly. Since he is a proud owner of this pack, we even discussed some of the ways that he packs certain items, and just how versatile this pack can be. The pack was then loaded it with some weight and I was instructed to walk around the store for a bit to see how it feels. Needless to say, it felt great and I brought the pack home with me that day. Great shopping experience!

So far I have only used the pack for day hikes. But I do intend on using it for some 2-3 day outings, and I'm confident that this pack is well suited to carry everything I will need. I've been told that one could live out of this pack for many more days, but I think that perspective will require a lot more use and experience.

I really like the suspension system that allows airflow across your back. It's not air conditioning, but it's better than nothing. It's hydration pack compatible, and the Camelbak 100oz Antidote reservoir (sold separately) works perfectly. I also like that there are three ways to access the main compartment; top, middle and bottom. This allows many options when it comes to how you pack items. The final item that prompted me to buy this pack is the fact that it comes with a rain cover that has it's own zippered pocket.

Overall, this pack is great. I highly recommend it if you're looking for a pack this size. I also highly recommend shopping in store to ensure you get the proper fit. Thanks EMS!

the sweet spot for dayhiking

I use this pack for day hikes. For years I used the Gregory Z22 and liked it, but I increasingly added more "survival" gear (bigger medical kit, gaiters, rope etc.) so the Z22 seemed a little cramped. Adding another 1000 cc's with the Z40 added very little weight and really improved the loading. It also seems to have a better suspension or for whatever reason feels more comfortable. My routine load is about 20 lbs.,and the pack could easily accomodate another 10 or so,although I have not yet used it for an overnighter. So I think it's the perfect size for someone like me who dayhikes 30 or so miles a week and occasionally camps out overnight. Great features too-- multiple access points, sleeping bag compartment and especially the two elasticized side pockets (water bottles and bear spray). Finally, EMS put it on sale, so the deal was good also. Very happy with it.

Simply Outstanding...

I purchased this pack sight unseen, but after a lot of research. Not disappointed. The pack is well made with zippers that actually work. The hip belt straps are a nice size and don't fold over and jam like some others. I like that it has a separate bag compartment, although it's obviously sized for ultralights (not surprising given the intended uses of the pack). Also includes a pack cover built into a little pocket underneath...very handy feature. We'll see how it performs after a few months of hard use, but I'm hopeful.

Totally Exceeded My Expectations

I did research for over a month deciding on the best manufacturer and then the best model. The Gregory Z40 was the choice. Today, I took the Z40 out on the trail, and I must say it has exceeded my expectations. Once I put the pack on and tightened the straps, the pack felt like it was custom made for my back. We climbed a 4200 mountain and not once did I feel any discomfort on my shoulders or back. The suspension is top notch.

Perfect mid-size bag

I ordered this bag for a week-long trip to Barcelona. It's sized just right for carry-on luggage, and I managed to pack just enough to get me through 1 week at a hostel in BCN. If you need to pack a bunch of different outfits for the club this isn't for you, but if you're packing light and seeing the sights like I did it's just fine.

Comfortable and functional!

I bought this backpack to take with me from the U.S. for hiking in the U.K. and it has been really wonderful. It is a good carry-on for flying and lovely for biking, walking and hiking around. The adjustable straps allow you to fir the pack to your body really comfortably!

Excellent Pack

This is a very versatile pack. On my hikes I need to carry lots of water and it's very comfortable to carry all that weight with this pack. Gregory packs are designed for comfort along with excellent ventilation on your back.

Negative Reviews:

many decent points but with a fatal flaw

Decent in general, while hiking standing up, but as soon as you bend forward to look at a cool plant or to tie your shoes, watch out! Yikes! Really uncomfortable metal pressing against back. The way the stays are arranged seems nice as far as engineering, but gosh, not on your back! They had it better with the previous year's version, that had a somewhat different arrangement, and was comfy, too bad I don't still have that one.
