Gregory Sage 55 Reviews:

ALMOST Perfect Pack

I did A LOT of research before purchasing this pack and am very pleased with my decision. I recently used it for a 16 mile overnight trek over some very rocky terrain. It was very comfortable! Even though I could feel the "weight" of my pack (about 20 lbs) it was well distributed onto my hips and did not irritate or put any pressure on any specific area.

There are 2 reasons why I did not give this pack the full 5 stars. The first is the design/placement of the side-stretch pockets, normally used for waterbottles. I am 5'5, 120LBS and was measured for an XS pack. While it fit perfectly, I could not reach my waterbottle AT ALL. The entire trip I would need to ask my husband to help me get my bottle and then put it away for me(annoying!). This issue will be solved once I get a hydration pack, but it is something to consider when purchasing.

The second reason I gave it 4 stars is for the airflow/ventilation on the back padding. While comfortable, there is ZERO air flow and it can get VERY hot and sweaty. During the trip I took (mentioned above) the hottest it got out was about 75 degrees and my back was soaking wet.

All in all, though, I would highly recommend this pack.

This is a backpack well made for a woman

I got this pack for my wife last year after an REI Expert sized her in the store and recommended it.

The pack is certainly big enough to carry plenty of gear. We packed a 21L REI Serrana sleeping bag, iPad, Big Agnes Insulated Air Core, extra clothes, 2 days food, box of wine and some other odds and ends in the pack.

Most important was the fit. We had her Sage 55 loaded to a little over 25 pounds and she wasn't bothered at all by the weight during or after the hike.

The only downside to this pack is the weight, as it approaches 4 pounds. However, we have to acknowledge that the extra weight in the pack has been put into building a solid pack support system for ladies. If Gregory was able to shave a pound off, it would be a 5 rating.

perfect multi-use pack

Disclaimer: I haven't actually used this pack yet, but I spent a lot of time trying them on in the store, soliciting advice from friends, and asking zillions of questions of the poor REI staff across multiple store visits. I was looking for a pack that can be used for basically everything that a casual adventurer would need, especially comfort and versatility without much extra. This pack fit the bill in every way. Having recently moved from Minnesota to France, I felt strong enough that this was *the* pack to justify paying international shipping and ridiculous taxes to get it here and I'm excited to put it to use for long weekend trips by train and hopefully a few summer camping getaways.

Good Pack

My primary reason for getting this pack was that it fit, finally! (Those of you with 14in torsos take note: The XS is actually small enough.) So while I do with it was more feature heavy (more compartments, more access to the main compartment, more gear loops, etc), it rocks at fit and adjustability, which makes up for just about everything else. It also makes carrying a pretty heavy load comfortable (my climbing rope, al my gear, food and clothes for 3 days), which is great for someone small like me. So all in all, a good pack!

Perfect pack for my trip

I used this backpack for a 2 week trip around Costa Rica. Though I did not use it every day due to leaving it in various hotels/hostels the movement between locations was easy with the pack. I did have some shoulder bruising from the straps, I think that was just due to getting used to holding the weight (about 26 pounds when I left), because the actual straps were comfortable. I'm looking forward to using this as a replacement for luggage on future much easier!

Handled the situatuion

I am petite by pack measures and had to use the extra small size. I did feel limited to my movements but was using the pack for a 4 day hike. I highly reccomend filling H2O reservior prior to packing everything else to get full usage.
