I have the version with the adz instead of the hammer. It's very light and with the T rated shaft I'm not afraid of bending it or causing damage. Works great and is easy to throw on a backpack whenever I'm heading up into the snow and ice. The leash has a nice rubber cover for the point. The point on the pick is pretty darn sharp. Pick up one of the Black Diamond Ice axe covers for the pick and/or adz to protect you and your gear.
This is a great 2nd axe for steep snow/glacier ascents. I don't believe the pick's angle is agressive enough for vertical ice. The description for the adze version of this axe says suitable for ice climbing, but I would reccomend dedicated tools for ice.
I have the earlier version with the standard leash.
This hammer and its matching axe make a perfect pair for almost any alpine climb short of hard technical ice and mixed. Liberty Ridge...N. Ridge of Baker? Perfect!
Pickets or pitons this hammer will do it all and it is decent as a single tool for self arrest.
