A MUST HAVE piece of equipment

I LOVE my GSI pressure cooker. In my opinion, this is a MUST HAVE piece of equipment. I have the 2.8 liter which is perfect for small groups of 2 to three people.

You can use it as a pressure cooker or as a regular pot. it is lightweight and the handles are stubby so it is easy to pack. The pressure toggle screws on, so you can store it with the lid so it won't get lost. This is a good quality piece of equipment, not the junk that is available elsewhere.

If you have not discovered the joys of a pressure cooker, use this opportunity to learn. Pressure cookers are so efficient you will wonder why you have not been using them.

Pressure cookers allow you to be a GOURMET cook in the wilderness with a minimum of fuel and time. With the GSI pressure cooker, you can cook beans from dry hard to soup in 25 minutes flat. It would normally take four hours. You can cook roasts, whole chickens to moist, tender perfection in minutes. You cam make the best cheesecake EVER - you will never do it any other way once you try the pressure cooker method.

The GSI pressure cooker is THE BEST way to cook dried foods like vegetables you might dry in your home food dryer. This unit will even bring dried corn completely back to life in a few short minutes. If you used a conventional boiling pot, reconstiting dried vegetables and meat is time consuming with so-so results. The GSI pressure cooker makes the needed difference.

We use ours for daily use as well as for camping. It is the most important cross-over kitchen/camping equipment we own.

BTW, the GSI customer service is fantastic. I stupidly melted my pressure toggle by my own fault and GSI replaced it free with no hassle. Nice people.

Most useful cooking equipment ever

This is my favorite camp cooking equipment of all time and one of my favorite pieces out of ALL my camping gear... including my canoe that I love.

Unlike the heavier versions from the kitchen section of the department stores, this pressure cooker is lightweight.

This is the only way to efficiently rehydrate food that you might dry in a home food dryer. It will even rehydrate/cook dried corn and meat which are nearly impossible to do with just a pot of boiling water.

This pressure cooker will cook dried beans like Pinto or navy beans without pre-soaking in about 25 minutes.

It is so fast and efficient to cook with that I don't bother to use it with a fire. Before the fire is built, I have dinner ready with the presssure cooker and a small gas stove.

Imagine making chili from Scratch using all dried ingredients including the meat and the beans, onions, corn, carrots and doing it in 25 minutes.

You can literally pack this pot with dried food, pack the pressure cooker pot in your pack, and have about a week's food for one person.

This is a cross-over kitchenware at out house. We use it in the kitchen at home on a regular basis and we use it for camping.

i like it

I like it. small easy to clean. I don't use it much but like having a cooker around.
I did find the pressure button-indicator alittle hard to see. my old one had a red button and there was no mistake when it was up.

Good lightweight pressure cooker

Light weight, easy to clean and fairly easy to use pressure cooker. Rocker valve not as pleasent to the ear as Presto pressure cooker rockers.

Negative Reviews:

Not good

I just received mine from Campmor and tried it out.The first hint of things to come for this pressure cooker supposedly sold as a camping pressure cooker by GSI "OUTDOORS" was the first page of the instruction manual printed in big bold letters; "THIS PRESSURE COOKER IS INTENDED FOR HOUSEHOLD USE ONLY". So, I suppose that is GSI's attempt to claim that if you use it for camping, it voids their liability and warrantee. The instuctions also say you cannot cook rice in this unit. What?? What kind of pressure cooker cannot cook rice?As a consumer, I do not appreciate being responsible for the quality control of products I buy.This GSI pressure unit came with loose handles that I had to tighten, and parts that needed to be replaced.The box came with two spare pressure valves which I initially thought was nice until I had to use the spares to find one that worked. I finally got the pressure cooker to work after making adjustments, but I don't think you should have to fix new products to make them work. My guess is that GSI just buys these from China with very little real interaction or quality checks at the factory.Most disturbing is that when I trial ran the cooker with plain water, I got a pure white talc substance lining the inside wall of the pressure cooker. I never had this before with other pressure cookers using the same tap water from my home. It does not appear to be minerals from the hot water. It is some kind of slick, almost pasty white talc. I assume it is aluminum oxide which I was trying to avoid when I bought this anodized GSI unit. Chinese anodizing has been known to be plagued with frauds that are more toxic than not having any anodizing. I suspect this might be the case with the GSI unit. I will attach a video and some pics of the unit showing the residue that concerns me. Note that this residue was worse with the first trial and by the fourth run, was negligable... so the residue was leached from the cooker, NOT from the water.GSI cleverly only gives the pressure information as 80 kPa rather tnan in psi. This is because 80 kPa is only 11.60 psi which is puny by pressure cooker standards which are usually between 14 to 16 psi which means it cooks slower and you won't be able to follow any standard pressure cooker recipes. You will have to learn as you go with ruined meals as your guide.The truth is, this "GSI" pressure cooker is the anodized version of the Basic Essentials brand of pressure cookers available at big box department stores for 40% lower price All in all, there are too many quality flaws and concerns about toxic coating materials for me to use this with confidence to feed my family, friends, and myself.

Good, but pricey

Pressure cookers are so energy and time efficient that it only makes sense to use them for camping. I won't carry in a cast iron dutch oven for beans, but I would carry in a lightweight pressure cooker.

It is good that GSI offers a packable pressure cooker with stubby handles rather than the traditional heavy cookers the long gangly handles.

Apparently to save weight (a good thing), this pressure cooker only generates about 11.4 psi. Most standard pressure cookers create about 14 to 16 psi. A reasonably good instruction manual is included, but if you want to use pressure cooker recipe books based on standard higher psi, then you will have to learn how to make adjustments. The difference between this GSI pressure cooker with 11.4 psi and others is only a few more minutes wait - literally maybe three extra minutes compaired with traditional pressure cookers.

I am not convinced that the special coating adds much value to this pressure cooker. The "coating" seems more like a colorant than a noticable coating and I have not found it to have any real release properties.

The pressure cooker weight jiggler screws on and off the pressure stem which is good for keeping it from getting lost.

Cons include the low temperature plastic parts such as the handles and the jiggler weight. These parts will clearly melt and burn if exposed to heat or flame. Thus, the use of this pressure cooker is limited to controled and focused heat; ie, a camp stove or very focused trench fire or portable fire box. If flames lick the sides of this pot, the plastic handles (with integral pressure valves) will melt and burn, no question about it. This is not heat resistant plastic by any means. For the premium price GSI is asking for this unit, they should have used better materials.

Another disapointment is that the plastic handles are screwed on with cheap, short, stainless wood or sheet metal screws that need to be tightened regularily.

The truth is that this pressure cooker is an exact model (except with the addition of the coating) that can be found in houseware departments at big-box stores for about half the money. Considering the premium price, GSI owes it to their customers and to themselves to upgrade the handle material.

This 2.8 liter unit is appropriate for feeding two or three big eating hungry men a nice big bowl of bean or pea soup. Would probably hold a chicken or small roast. The size is perfect for my needs.

Keep in mind that the slight weight disadvantage of this pot over a standard thin walled aluminum or steel pot are quickly overcome by the fact that you can bring dried beans with you and cook them tender in about fifteen minutes rather than four hours. This not only saves fuel and weight, but greatly enhanses the variety of foods you can prepare while camping.

Bottom line is that this is a useable pressure cooker with your camp stove or very control designed fires. The benefits of pressure cooking to the camper far outweigh the disadvantages of the unit that I explain above. Thus, I would recommend this pressure cooker.
