best kitchen kit out there
First of all-these tools are plastic, which for the most part means direct contact with flame or sustained pressure on hot objects will eventually melt them. If you are picking stuff out of a fire or turning it on a grill over a fire, bring metal tools. But with that out of the way, I absolutely love this kit. Being the camp chef, this kit is phenomenally well thought out. Excellent design and immensely useful items included. How I cooked in camp for decades without tongs is a mystery.
True, the cutting board is too small to be all that useful, but its a good addition, and you can use it as a base for a fuel canister. The bag itself is my favorite part of this whole thing. A half-circle with plenty extra room at the top allows you to absolutely cram it with tools and it still easily fits into a bear can-it fits perfectly in any of the large mouth models or in a cooking pot. I added a whisk, MSR spoon/tool, a compact fixed-blade knife, two extra GSI spice containers, lighters, match case, bandana and it all still fits. Genius.
All that being said, I usually don't bring this backpacking as I like to travel pretty minimally. But for car camping, kayak/canoe camping or backpacking with 3+ people, this can't be beat.
A Place for Everything...
One of my favorite parts of camping is when everyone gets together and eats after a long day of hiking/canoeing. I love to cook and I also love having the right utensils in my repertoire to execute great camp meals. I had been looking for a pair of plastic tongs at regular retail/grocery stores that were also small enough to pack with my camp kitchen. I was so excited when I saw the Crossover Kitchen came with a pair. I initially bought this JUST for the tongs, but after I opened the package I realized what a find this was. Everything is compact, without being annoyingly small and too hard to use; and fits nicely in the zippered case. The spatula, tongs and ladle are all useful as is the spice container that has four chambers so you can carry a variety of spices without needing four separate vials. The small detergent bottle is the perfect size for a week's worth of camp dishes, too. I would highly recommend this as an addition to anyone's camp kitchen. The only thing I could gripe about is that the Crossover doesn't nest in my GSI Dualist Kitchen, but apparently does in the GSI Bugaboo 4 Person Kitchen.
Great mobile kitchen
I bought this because i was head into a more backcountry gourmet style of cooking and away from boil and fill freeze dried meals. It is rather light weight for everything it comes with and does a great job of covering all your bases fro the things you need to cook. I used this to prepare a meal for 15 people using two stoves and several pots and pans, it did a great job of providing me with all the tools i needed to cook sausages , prepare and fix potatoes and to make several omelets all at the same time. The only thing i had an issue wiht was the fact that the tools are not more heat resistant, i had several of the point on the spatula melt while i was using ti to stir and flip potatoes i was frying. Over all a great set of backcountry cooking tools.
Great Mess Kit
I have used this mess kit on several trips, and it really comes in handy. It has all the essentials you need for camping, and it's a great way to keep it all organized. There's a little extra room in the bag to customize it for your kitchen needs. I personally added a bottle of hand sanitizer, and small bottle of hot sauce. All of the utensils will come clean very easily.
The only cons I have are that I've noticed some discoloring of the spoon after frequent use. Also, it would have been nice if the top of the bag, where the scour pad and towel reside, was perforated to help with drying.
This kit has everything you need to make a dinner while you're out, and I would recommend it to any new hiker.
Great Kit- worth the money
We just used this kit for the first time (car camping) and it worked out great. the utensils were great, although there is potential for melting if you are not careful. It held everything we needed to cook. We did not use the salt/peper shakek nor the other containers it came with. The cutting board is small, but for veggies it works out fine. If you are trying to filet a big fish, you could have problems.
there is plenty of room to add your own containers, gadgets, or small knife.
Cool set minus the spice container.
Great set. Everything that is in it is cool except for the spice container.
The spice container and the bag everything comes in are over designed and way too heavy for their functions. I took a star off for that, tossed the spice container and put everything else into a lightweight bag.
Otherwise, the set is good for car camping. I wouldn't really recommend this for backpacking unless you are doing glamour backpacking and splitting gear among friends.
Overpriced but still happy with it
The only complaint I have is the price. I am a fan of GSI Outdoors products and think this one is about $10 too much.
love the pivot; surprisingly sturdy and stable; bottles for soap and oils are great addition; only got a 2 section spice holder, not four as described; Very compact and light. Overall, a good buy.
This is a wonderful addition to anyone's camp kitchen! The scrub pad is just big enough for a ladies hand & dries quickly. The bag everything comes in even has additional room to hold my sporks. I can imagine if you were backpacking this would be a great tool kit to have and its extremely lightweight.
Got everything I need
I use this product mostly for backpacking and car camping. I can't say one bad thing about it, because it has everything I need to cook with. I love it to pack everything in one bag and keep it compact. I will buy it again. It's nice that you can pack in the bowl.
I do small group backpacking and this works perfect for me. It has not failed in any manner. I did add a wisk to the kit. I did compare the other brands and after a lot of research I found this was a good quality product for the best price.
