Great Camping Pots

We have used this set for over two months now on at least 5-6 car camping trips. The set is compact and easy to stow. Pots are well made, light weight, and hold the heat quite well. Although I have never done any real comparison, it feels like boiling water takes little time (hence propane). I have to say, however, that they scratch quite easily so we use only plastic or wood utensils with the set. The other big problem is that the hands on the largest 5-liter pot must be open while cooking. Otherwise, you will melt or burn the orange wrapping. I learned that the hard way. GSI should do something about it as those handles even when completely open get very hot, often times too hot to lift the pan during cooking. They should use different (more resistant) material and/or improve the design. Also, I cannot imagine that anyone can use the bag, which holds all the pots, as a sink. It is way too small for that. Despite all those small problems, we like this set for its light weight, ease of packing, and perfect pot sizes for our family of four.

Great for large groups

I've been using these pot almost every weekend for about 6 months while car camping. I needed large pots to feed 4-6 people and didn't want any extra weight.

The 3 and 5 liter pots are perfect- durable non-stick surface, strainer built into the lid, sturdy handles. A little wear shows on the non-stick surface of the bigger pot because the handle attachments rub again the small pot when nested, but it doesn't really affect the cooking surface and you could use a cloth to protect the surface.

The cutting board protects the cooking surface when nested and is useful and sturdy, but I usually bring a bigger one as well since we car camp.

The fry pan is too small to be useful and will melt the lid.

Other reviews have complained that the lids melt easily. The lids are plastic; do not set them on a hot burner and they won't melt. I had no problem for months until I tried to use the fry pan, which will melt the lid.

Great for groups

The pots are large enough for serving groups.
The non-stick surface makes for easy cleaning.
The handles on the larger pot allow for easy lifting and support while stirring/serving.
The case works great for holding water during washing.
The smaller pot is able accommodate the GSI Teapot that we bought separately.

Nesting is nice, but the handle slot on the smaller pot can rub against the inside of the larger pot causing damage to the non-stick surface.
The cutting board can also cause scratches to the bottom of the pot during travel.
Handle for smaller pot slides around inside smaller pot during travel and can damage the non-stick surface as well.

Issues with the scratches can be avoided by adding rubber shelving liner between pieces.

This set rocks!

Got to use this for the first time on a weekend outing with my son. We were well fed and the kit worked like a champ. Used in conjunction with the Dualist kit, life was good. One word of caution, the aluminum in thin compared to my kitchen pots (iron and stainless) so you will need to manage your stove output. No need to crank the heat unless boiling water or heating soup. All in all, for light backpacking/car camping this set will serve you well.

Would recommend to a friend.

All You Need-Grab And Go!

Everything works like it should, though I have two cautions:

Fold OUT the handles on the large pot when cooking....the plastic will melt onto the pot!

If you are using the lids for straining will take some talent since the lids do not latch onto the pot.

Other than that....these work great!

Decent cook set, needs some improvements

I ordered this cook set to accommodate 6 guys on a 5-day canoe/camping trip. It was not available my local REI store, so I ordered from the website. Shipping was fast but GSI's packaging is flawed. Inside the box, the metal handle (located in the small pot) dented and scratch the teflon surface. (see pictures). REI's customers service sent out a replacement that day and the new cook set did manage to come before the trip.

Things to improve:
* Improve packaging so handle does not damage cooking surface
* Replace plastic lids with metal ones
* Include a 2nd collapsible handle
* Improve Sink -can only hold about 1" of water before spills

This cookset did performed awesome during our trip. We were able to make spaghetti with meat sauce for all of us at once. It browned 2.5lbs of hamburger and boiled a whole box of noodles like a boss. When straining the noodles, the plastic lid did work, but the steam and hot water starter to make it a little pliable. This is where I think a metal lid would work better.

We also made bacon and eggs a couple of mornings. We had to tear the bacon in half to fit into the frying pan. Eggs did not stick and cleanup was a breeze.

I would have rated this cookset 4/5 stars if the first one had arrived unharmed. It is a solid cookset if you will be preparing food for a medium to larger group of people.
