The silicone impregnation keeps the fabric waterproof to a pressure of 1 pound per sq inch (2 ft water pressure depth). Which exceeds the pressure generated by a hard rainstorm.

Integral Designs Silcoat Stuff Sacks
I prefer these to the granite gear stuff sacks, because I like the silcoat material as opposed to the granite gear material. It seems to be a little tougher. I have given these some serious abuse and they have held up great. I have a large sized one in yellow that works great for a bear bag.
