Exceptional Product

I shuttle skiers around Vail, jumping in and out of a bus on packed snow and ice all day. The Microspikes never interfere with the job of driving and provide flawless traction on any outdoor surface. They pack and unpack easily and they clean up with just a rinse. If you buy them, carry them all winter and you will be amazed at the value they provide. If they prevent one injury, they will pay for themselves. Working in a ski resort, I see injuries every day from slips and falls that could be avoided by using Microspikes. They Rock.

Finally, take the time to center them carefully on your feet or they will shift under the weight of your stance, leaving a feeling that your ankle can roll in or out. It is easy to install them properly each time, but I needed to sit to get them just right- I couldn't do it hopping on one leg. Once they are positioned properly they stay that way until removed. I run on the shoulders of roads and they are light but provide a powerful toe-off for running on snow, ice, mud or cinders.

This is the product you want.

Bottom line: this is the best non-crampon traction product on the market. They may be a little extreme for shoveling a dusting of snow off your driveway or a walk to the grocery store. But get off the pavement and there's no equal. You could comfortably hike 95% of New England trails in winter in them. Plus they're light and small, you can easily put them in a jacket pocket or toss them in the bottom of your pack "just in case."

A word of advice, size down. If you're wearing them on boots, use the shoe size chart. They are very stretchy. I have the L and they can stretch to fit my mens size 13 Scarpa Koflach Arctis Expe (double plastic) and my Baffin Mountain (pac) boots, but also work on my trail runners.

Probably the best $60 you can spend on this website (unless you live in perpetual warmth)

If you ever find yourself hiking in an area with snow, slush, sleet, ice or the like, then you will quickly realize how awesome Microspikes are the first time that you climb right up some steep, icy rock on a trail. You barely even notice that you have these on while you're hiking, unlike front-pointed crampons. I've had my pair for a couple of years now, and have used them on hikes in NY, VT and NH. There's no doubt that they've prevented twists, sprains and possibly even broken bones on the trail. Seriously, they're the best $60 outdoor product around, even though they look like they're cheap and not going to last. Just buy yourself a pair already and join the rest of the smart kids.

Outstanding product; perfomance is unmatched in category

Recently worked in a snowy region in Afghanistan (elev. 8900m). I used these things constantly and they took all kinds of abuse. Prior to getting these slip on spikes, I was of the opinion that this set would only be good for occassional use. I actually left these spikes on one set of boots and used them for about 2 months straight. I live in a snowy region in the states and will keep my set in my truckbox. I had yaktrax 2 years ago and found that the springs only really worked on a snowy improved roads. Rocks, debris and sticks could get stuck in the springs routinely; the Kahtoolas don't have that problem.

Holy Canyon Climber

I bought two pair of these for my son and I to hike in the Grand Canyon over winter 2 years ago. They held up wonderfully for the ascent down and up when there was ice and slush on the trail. I tested before we went hiking on our icy black top and knew they would be wonderful.Since the hike I have keep a pair in my wife's car and mine. It has come in handy when things get icy. Now 2 years after the purchase, I am planning another hike down the Grand Canyon and my son and I will be wearing them again. They hold up great and worth every penny.

They work if you keep it mellow

You aren't going to climb or run in these (at least not for long), but they will keep you going on an icy trail. Lateral movements and steep inclines get sloppy fast.Unless you've got an extra cinch-bag made of heavy nylon, get the pouch for them, cuz those spikes are . . . spiky -- and they will go through or rip most any of your gear and the upholstery in your car. These also are the ticket if you want to get even with a greenskeeper or lawn fetishist without risking the ankle turns that come with using crampons on turf.

Work beautifully

Used for the first time last weekend and what a great improvement versus just using trekking poles. We waited to put them on until the trail became solid snow/ice and it felt like we had boosters on our feet. Didn't realize until we put them on how much traction we were losing. Seem to be very well made. Noticed almost all the other hikers on the Mt. Si trail were using the same ones. Would never hike without them again in the winter. Great on snow/ice mix.

essential

My first journey on these was a winter hike in the blackhead moutains of the Catskills last winter. We didn't have much snow that winter, but the peak was a solid block of ice. I kept them on for 90% of the hike on ice and mixed rock and ice and was totally in control the whole time. I was only wearing trail runners too. Crampons probably would have been better at the top but some French technique did the trick on the steep spots.

Really grip the slick ice!

I would recommend these to hikers on groomed or ungroomed trails. I have a pair and gave a pair for Christmas last year. The review I got back was that they never fail like the yak-trax that the person had previously. Ok, it's my mom, but hey she is safe from slipping! Mi use them on treks in Wisconsin when there is packed snow in jan and feb. it is a step down from snowshoes, but then not all situations require or allow snowshoes.
brent at Moosejaw on 01/05/2012

Amazing

I hike extensively in the White Mountains, and these are absolutely in my bag any time there is a chance of ice or snow. With these and a pair of snowshoes, I have always been happy. Unless you are climbing with an axe, these will replace the need for crampons. I have size 14s and XL is a bit loose, so adjust sizing accordingly. These are not for walking on slippery sidewalks, but if you hike or head into the mountains, an absolute must.

micro spikes

They worked great, the hike was 12 miles. by mid day I felt the pressure from the spikes on my feet. A shorter hike I believe would have been easier on the feet. But you needed them all day .
