The Katadyn Hiker Pro Replacement Cartridge replaces old, scummy cartridges from your Katadyn Hiker or Hiker Pro microfilter. The Hiker Pro Cartridge uses the same awesome microfilter element, but wraps it in a protective membrance that makes it a snap to service in the field. Clogs will be less common and easier to fix if they do. When you're out in the wilderness, you just need the water, not the nasty things living in it.

Katadyn Hiker Pro Reviews:

Positive Reviews:

I had the old Pur Hiker and bought this replacement cartridge. I was able to screw the top off and replace it with the new cartridge. It comes with a thin layer of plastic to wrap around the cartridge for more protection. The lub helps slid on the tube. I pumped some fresh water and its working. Instead of buying a brand new water petrification kit this replaced a perfectly fine working item but now its brand new because the cartridge is fresh.

This filter lasts a long time, and is easy to clean. The replacement comes with a small tube of O-ring lubricant to help ensure that it does not leak. There is a fine mesh "filter protector" which filters out larger debris before it gets to the actual filter. I use this in the Katadyn Base Camp (gravity bag) system, and it works wonderfully. This is indeed the correct replacement filter for that system.

Reliable and Convenient Water Treatment

I have two Katadyn water filters: the Base Camp and the Hiker Pro. Each is at least four years old. I love being able to carry one replacement cartridge that will work in whichever of my filters needs replacement. This year, I carried the spare into Quetico and didn't need it. Both filters continued working with the cartridges I installed last year (the Base Camp) or the year before (the Hiker).

Doesn't last long in Boundary Waters

I use these with the gravity filter in the Boundary Waters. I always paddle out 50 yards or so from shore to avoid shoreline gunk but only get about 15-20 gallons per filter. Basically it is one 6-7 day trip per filter. I would recommend to a friend that has already has the gravity filter or hiker pump. Otherwise I would recommend going with a brand that has a cleanable filter.

clean and tasty water, no diarrhea... priceless!

The new cartridge looks like my old one, but is much cleaner. I am tempted to not use it so I can keep it clean so it should last a really long time. My previous filter cartridge bit the dust, actually it was glacial silt, on a recent climb. The protective sleeve that now is included with the cartridge should help prolong its life in this 'extreme' environment. Time will tell.

Good filter. Easy to change.

This is a great easy to change filter. It lasts quite a while as long as you don't try to filter water that is too murky. It comes with a tube of silicone lube that has way more than you need for the filter. If you are resourceful, you can figure out a good way to put the rest of it to good use.

The Katadyn Hiker Pro makes a great long lasting replacement cartridge, but even the best have to be replaced sooner or later. When I hike solo on the Appalachian Trail one filter will last me well over 1,000 miles. They are quick and easy to replace and because they have a great reputation they are sold at most outdooor stores along the AT.

Willy Syndram at Backcountry.com on 01/03/2011

This is one long-lasting cartridge but it does have to be replaced every once in awhile. The best way I determine replacement is the difference in color. Labored pumping doesn't occur until later. Works great until the very end. Dry out as good as possible & store in a plastic bag in the freezer when not being used for long periods of time.

moroni at Backcountry.com on 04/10/2008

I've used my filter now for about three years and it is one of the best systems that I have ever used. It is lightweight and efficient. I do a lot of tough hiking and it is a very good system. A buddy of mine bought one before deploying to Afghanistan and he swore by the filter. That's what got me looking.

I work for a YMCA Camp and this is the product used to take 10+ kids into the backcountry and depend on for water/survival. It is a great product and serves up the best mountain fresh water I have ever tasted.
I have just purchased one for myself and friend!
Can't wait for another trip to taste the best water ever!

Negative Reviews:

In the wilderness with no water.

We have found that the filters typically only last about half as long as they should (even though they are used in very clean water which some people drink from the lake.) On our latest trip, we put in a new filter one day into the trip. It didn't allow any water to flow. We eventually forced small drips, but found water filtering to be a job that had to be done full time anytime we were in camp. Also, no way to backwash this with our Basecamper model to extend the life. When it works, it works well. However, we have had our frustrations.

Neutral Reviews:

Use accompanying screen

Was surprised to see filter discolored after only one use. The accompanying screen was not used. however, I did not use a screen for my previous filter and it did not discolor for several years.
pops at Campmor on 02/02/2011

It arrived without the plug and despite

The filter itself is great. But it arrived without a plug, and despite the "O-ring" lubrication, it leaked seriously.
