Reliable and Convenient Water Treatment

I have two Katadyn water filters: the Base Camp and the Hiker Pro. Each is at least four years old. I love being able to carry one replacement cartridge that will work in whichever of my filters needs replacement. This year, I carried the spare into Quetico and didn't need it. Both filters continued working with the cartridges I installed last year (the Base Camp) or the year before (the Hiker).

I hate to pump! this is great!

It is lighter than a pump, and it works by itself!

I'm not sure why, but last year I took it for 10 days in BWCAW and after a week its flow was very slow, and backwashing didn't seem to help.
This year I got a new cartridge and it has worked flawlessly on two trips...

Clean drinking water in the wilderness!

The filter worked great in combination with a small hand-held pump and a gravity filter bag. We had plenty of clean water to drink while on our 6-day Boundary Waters canoe trip. I highly recommend adding a pre-filter (you can make your own out of cofee filters) to prolong the life of the filter cartridge.

Years of great Quality Water

Packaging fails to mention the filter's carbon core which removes a variety of chemicals. Had to contact Katadyn to verify the carbon core was still a feature of this replacement filter. Aside from that packaging gaff, this filter is the same great quality filter. I get lots of use out of one filter.

filter

Make sure to pump about a quart of fresh water through a new filter before taking into the woods. It will clear out the factory residue. Fill sink with clean water only and pump into other side of double sink or bucket. You will see what I mean.

Hiker Pro Cartridge

This is the ONLY filter that fits my Hiker Pro water filter. I gotta' buy it. I use it in the Adirondack Preserve of NY State where the water has loads of tannin so the filter gets stained and clogged readily.

worked well in my old PUR voyager

I filtered about 10+ gallons of water a day on a 4 day backpacking trip with a group. No problems, but I do cover my acorn filter w/ a coffee filter that prevents sediment from clogging the filter.

Hiker Pro Replacement Cartridge

I have had the pro hiker many years; I like that the company has improved it's replacement kit by including filter screen, sponge, and lubricant. I wish the little acorn prefilter was still available.

Excellent, but expensive

I use this filter for backpacking trips. It works excellent, the quality is good. I've had not problems with these replacement filters. My only real issue is that they are so darn expensive.

Safety in every sip

From streams to watering holes, you get safe and ready to drink water everytime. Small and light weight but filling up takes no time at all. Every backpack needs one of these!

Negative Reviews:

In the wilderness with no water.

We have found that the filters typically only last about half as long as they should (even though they are used in very clean water which some people drink from the lake.) On our latest trip, we put in a new filter one day into the trip. It didn't allow any water to flow. We eventually forced small drips, but found water filtering to be a job that had to be done full time anytime we were in camp. Also, no way to backwash this with our Basecamper model to extend the life. When it works, it works well. However, we have had our frustrations.

Use accompanying screen

Was surprised to see filter discolored after only one use. The accompanying screen was not used. however, I did not use a screen for my previous filter and it did not discolor for several years.

It arrived without the plug and despite

The filter itself is great. But it arrived without a plug, and despite the "O-ring" lubrication, it leaked seriously.
