Great sandals and not just for hiking!
I bought these sandals originally for a trip to Kauai where I knew I would use them for hiking,kayaking and snorkeling. What I didn't expect was to be wearing them after my trip for every day use. The sales guy said he owned 3 pairs and used them like slippers and daily sneakers. I have been wearing them often at home and have found them to be so comfortable, while also providing support. I end up on my feet a lot during the day and they often are so achy at night. I have been wearing the Keen sandals and have noticed a dramatic reduction in aching legs and back at night time. Now, while they may not be cute and fashionable little sandals that you could wear with a sun dress, they actually look great with shorts and jeans. It would be nice to see them add some more color options for women that would go with more items, but the blue has worked out for me so far. I would definitely recommend these sandals to anyone, both active and non active people. The support is great and the traction and stability never let me down on the wet and slippery trails in Kauai. I will definitely buy another pair when the time comes to replace these. One other note....these shoes tend to be wide at the toe area, which for me worked great because of a bunyon problem. Due to the ability to tighten and loosen for a perfect fit, I do not think this would cause a problem for a person with narrower feet.

I live in these shoes now!!! After making the mistake of wearing another shoe one day & my poor feet suffering tremendously from this, I haven't made that same mistake twice. These shoes fit to the tee in every way possible. As if your feet were poured into them creating the perfect fit. I own a lot of shoes & these are the most comfortable, durable, well-designed & thought out shoe I've ever owned or tried on. My poor, aching, sore feet from walking on cement floors for many years @ work, no longer hurt whatsoever. I was so impressed that I bought 5 more pairs of different colors to match my clothes. My boyfriend tried a pr.on & was so impressively pleased from the feel of them that I surprised him with 2 pairs. I wanted him to feel good on his feet like me, plus I was concerned for his well-being especially that he has medical issues with his back, hips & ankles. He loves them!!! Says they have helped him feel better. He also has wide feet & says he can't believe how well they fit & they're the most comfortable shoes he's had. I have recommended them to family, friends & co-workers. They are definitely worth the money. You can't put a price on a pair of great feeling feet. Thank you so much for producing such a wonderful shoe. I will be a loyal customer for sure. For those of you that don't own a pair, at least try a pair on. You won't be disappointed.
Durable, Comfortable... but chafe!
I have had my Keen sandals for 4 years now, and I love them. They're especially great for short hikes on really hot summer days, when just the thought of lacing up hiking boots makes my feet start sweating. And whenever I go to Lake Powell, UT (every year or so), I don't even bother packing another pair of shoes because with all the rock climbing, cliff jumping, and swimming, I won't be wearing any other shoes. I've even worn these on overnight backpacking trips without any major chafing or comfort issues. I usually strap them to my pack on backpacking trips anyway because they're great around the campsite.
That said, I am on my third pair of Keen sandals, not because they wear out or break (they don't!), but because the first two pairs I purchased were just TOO SMALL. I wear an 8 in everyday shoes, and I've had to size up to a 9 for these because they run so small and the ankle strap starts to chafe after only about a mile walking (or after tehy get wet at all).
Bottom line: these sandals are super comfortable, don't require any breaking in, and slide off and on pretty easily (getting them off is a bit more challenging when they're wet, but they do dry easily). Just be sure to buy a bigger size than you think you need!!!

the lime green arrived today, and felt comfy straight out of the box! I saw all the reviews online, tried a pair on in the store. They seemed true to size length & width for me. My feet are slightly wide, but not wide enough for wide shoes but tend to feel a bit squeezed in some brands of sneakers. These felt perfect in width. They seem to have a firm sturdy base and sides. And are cushy for your foot in the bed part if that makes sense. very cozy yet supportive too. And no foot farts. I can't wear crocs because they make horrible unflattering sounds when I walk in them....these, no problem. I liked them so much that now my 2 little girls own them too for this summer.I tried on the Whisper that is similar to this when I was in the store. The whisper wasn't as comfortable to me. The straps are thinner on the whisper, but seemed to hit my toes at the wrong spots. The Whisper seemed lighter on my foot (just slightly), but this one seemed better for activity and use. I don't think the Whisper would have provided comfort after a long day of playing and walking. The Whisper just didn't seem as cozy.
Fantastic
I love my Keens, they have become an all-year round shoe; even in the snow! They are exceedingly comfortable and dry very quickly. I wore them rafting on the Colorado River last spring and they stayed put and did not give me blisters even when wet. I also wore them hiking throughout the SW US. One thing to remember is that they are water sandals, but not necessarily beach sandals. They do have holes in the sides which makes them awesome for rafters and kayakers and the like, but as for walking down a super-sandy beach, stuff will get in.
I will say that when I first tried them on I thought they were horribly tight, but after wearing them for a day, they were much easier to put on and the material relaxed enough that they fit perfectly.
The only negative is that my feet do sweat while I am wearing them, I think the foot bed material is so synthetic that it just makes my feet really hot. And then, since the material does not absorb the sweat, my feet smell super-sour after even 20 minutes of wear. The good news is that the smell hasn't been transferred to the shoe.
I will say that when I first tried them on I thought they were horribly tight, but after wearing them for a day, they were much easier to put on and the material relaxed enough that they fit perfectly.

Couldn't love them more
I got my first pair of Keen Newports 5 or 6 years ago, and have been a fan ever since. When I first got them, I wasn't impressed because the bottom of my heel kept blistering. I tried completely loosening the elastic cord, and the problem went away. Since then I have never used the cord to snug the fit, and have had no troubles. Never had an issue with stinky feet, either, but don't normally. I wear my Keens just about every chance I get. They are wonderful for walking around town all day, light trail hiking, scrambling around on rocks, wading in rocky streams...except for work, I can't really think of a situation where I couldn't wear my Keens. I would recommend wearing light socks if going through sand, because the toe guards make it impossible to just shake the sand out. However, those toe guards have saved my toes several times. The sandals keep my feet cool in hot weather (I live in southern California), and haven't had a problem with sweaty, slippery feet in them. Sadly, I managed to leave my last pair at a campground in Yosemite, so I will have to get me a new pair!
Great all around sandal
My first intro to the Keen line, these are amazing sandals. I have a wide foot and really high arch and have never found a sandal with the right amount of support. The sole moulds to your foot quite well and in a seemingly short period of time. This sandal had little to no break-in time. I have also walked many miles in these sandals with no blisters.
I have put these sandals to the test in extremely varied conditions. Some of the stitching between the nylon fabric and the neoprene looking foam material has completely blown out. However, the shoe still works just fine if you can handle aesthetic defects.
There are two major issues with these sandals. First, they stink terribly and embarassingly. I've surveyed many others with the same sandal who gave the same feedback. Expect to wash these sandals periodically. Secondly, the toe traps sand and small pebbles, more than your average sandal, which usually can only be removed by taking off the sandal. I just recently purchased the Keen Venice sandals (which I actually recommend over these) and the pebble/sand trapping problem is not as significant.
Overall a great sandal and highly recommended.

Just Bought Them Today
I'm a seasoned hiker/backpacker and have in depth knowledge about sandal/shoe quality from being a runner/hiker since the late 70's. Have wanted to get Keen's for many years and finally got them with my dividend today during the holiday sale. Love the color (Black). Tried on a different right foot to get the proper fit (The toe box was too tight), walked out of the store with them (Street shoes in the Keen box), and went home to clean the pool cover that has been sitting outside with a tarp over it all winter.
The Keens got soaked during the pool cover cleaning, though my feet felt stable in them and they were easy to clean after all the junk got in them and in the sole's. This was about 5 hours ago. I am wearing them in the house to dry them off. Today has been a very high humidity day and the house is extremely damp so they were still wet when I returned home. That's not unusual though, the Teva's I own often take overnight to dry.
Will update this in a few weeks if there are any issues. Doubt there will be.

Awesome Shoe
I absolutely love this shoe. I have put off buying a pair for a while because I really hated the look of the shoe. They ain't pretty, that's for sure but for functionality they can't be beat. For my job, I am constantly wading in and out of the water and walking along trails. They are supportive and when they get wet they don't rub and leave blisters like my Chaccos tend to do. Some have commented about rocks, sand, and debris getting into the shoes. I don't find it to be a huge problem; no worse than any other shoe and better than most. I don't know that I would wear them in deep sand like a beach area but some of the areas I walked in today were sandy and it wasn't annoying at all. I would highly recommend buying a half size up. Many reviewers commented about this and I am glad I took their advise. If I hadn't they would have been too small. I love these shoes and will buy another pair when I can afford it.
Great all-around Urban Hiking shoe
I have had two pairs of these shoes and I love them. They look great with jeans, capris, and shorts. They're the perfect shoe for walking around my city, San Francisco, where it rarely gets too hot but you can wear shoes w/o socks for about half the year. They're also great to wear to rock concerts where you're on the floor, dancing....they offer great protection from careless concertgoers who step on your feet! However, I don't recommend them for the beach (even though I know they're designed to go in the water) or sandy hiking trails; because the footbed is designed to cradle your foot and has slightly curved edges, stuff gets in the footbed and doesn't slip out. Consequently, I have to stop every so often to take the shoes off and shake the dirt out. But it's a minor issue compared to the degree of pleasure I get from wearing them. They're funky and fun and I'm proud to say I was one of the earlier adopters of the Keen Newport when it was the only style Keen offered.
Negative Reviews:
Would not recommend anymore
I had a pair of these two years ago that held up great for a summer of farm work and them a semester of stream ecology research, but the new pair I got is terrible. They get very uncomfortable when they are wet (rubbing blisters into my feet), they don't dry well, and they smell absolutely awful when they finally do dry. Since they are a "hybrid" shoe meant for some use in the water, I expected them to hold up better. I'm currently using them for farm work, same as my old pair, and these have barely made it through the first month. They get more uncomfortable every week and the seams at the back of the shoe are coming apart. I'm really disappointed because I loved the old pair I had, they were perfect, and this current pair is a complete dud. I'm not sure if Keen has changed how they make the shoe, but I'd only use the current ones for walking or light hiking; anything where your feet will stay dry.
Footbed leads to callous under big toe
I have had three pairs of Keen shoes. I have WANTED them to fit me well as they cost a lot of money. They ARE nice and wide in the footbed and are quality made. HOWEVER...the footbed is not good for my feet...My big toe gets a callous build up from these as well as the "Mary Jane" style. I also developed severe Achilles tendonitis after using Keen walking shoes for two years so that I couldn't walk more than five minutes without significant pain. I switched to a Teva walking shoe and the problem is largely resolved and I can walk an hour a day now again. Also, again though they LOOK like they should be utterly comfortable, the reality is that my feet get tired from walking in them. I don't know if it is the insole or the material, but they don't support my feet well for some reason as the Teva's or the Vasque shoes have.
Ummm, not so good
I bought these shoes specifically for the Kalalau Trail in Kauai. It's 11 miles one way with moderate terrain. I had done it 2 times prior and thought these shoes would be best as there is varied terrain, water crossings and potential of walking in mud the entire length. We were fortunate and had good trail conditions. About 3/4 of the way IN I noticed my heals slipping. I synched the lacing and they just kept slipping. I then noticed that the shoe was falling apart on BOTH feet on the outside stitching where it says "Keen" Anytime I had to push off my foot was moving. Not good!! I wasn't even to our campground yet AND I still had to come back out. Duct tape to the rescue. Returned the shoes. Very disappointed as I was really looking forward to putting many miles on them.
Great shoe ruined by lousy construction
My husband, son and I all purchased this sandal for a river trip through the Grand Canyon. I love the footbed and toe protection- excellent features for hiking, and a big plus since we spent as much time scrambling up trails as we did in the water. However, we were all very disappointed when the stitching on all 3 pairs began to unravel on only the 4th day. We had barely worn these prior to our trip. The thread that was used was very light weight and totally inappropriate and unable to bear the stress of regular hiking. I mean really - 4 days into a trip? These failures could have had a very negative impact on our trip. Good thing the river guides had an awl - we had to sew our sandals back together.
comfortable but not durable
First I need to say that I am really commenting on the men's shoe, but that is no longer available through REI. I had no complaints at first, they have great traction, are easy to put on or take off. But by 7 months they started falling apart, stichting coming loose, and this has been progressive. For three or four of those months I was in tropical climates in wet season, so they did get a fair amount of use, but the majority of the time I was wearing sandals and I never was on a long hike (short hikes, walking in streets in heavy rain, river rafting and canoeing) Perhaps they would have done better in a dry climate where they would have had a chance to dry out more rapidly.
Don't plan on actually walking in these
I splurged and bought these thinking I could use them hiking on some of my favorite trails that cross through streams. Wrong! I was so exitied to get them that I put them on to take my dog for a walk. The heel strap begin to irritate my foot immediately. No amount of tightening or loosening helped. We didn't make it half a mile before I had to take the things off and walk barefoot! If I could have gotten the blood stains out of the straps, I would have returned them. And did I mention they're ugly? There is so much rubber around the toes, they look like clown shoes! On the plus side, I can wear them to wash the car and they look like they will last forever!
I honestly don't like these sandals
I know most people loves these shoes...but I don't. I've had a pair for over a year now and I think I've worn them 10 times at most and each time they hurt my feet. I have wide feet with flat arches and they feel narrow, the toe box rubs my big toes in a not very comfortable way that causes my toe nails to actually hurt and getting them on and off is not the easiest thing to do. I really wanted to love them because my kids love theirs, my family members love theirs...but I don't love mine. I'm sticking with Ahnu's which are a much better fit for me.
Comfortable for perfect conditions, but thats it!
I bought these sandals 1 year ago, I love hiking in them as they are super comfortable. But that's where it ends. They are already tearing around the ankels for one and if you plan on being around water walking over stones and such they are super slippery, I was very disappointed because I fly fish. They also get pebbles in them and you have to literally take them off to get the pebbles out from under your feet. So in perfect hiking conditions, yes, I love them, but I want an all around sandal and will not be buying these again. I hope this helps, as they're not cheap.

At first I really liked these, but after wearing them a few times, I realized that they were annoying to get on and off, that rocks and dirt would get in them easily and not come out unless I took the whole shoe off (which, like I said, was a pain), and that they hit my little toe in such a way that I'm always afraid they're going to hit the toenail wrong and bend it back. So, they're going back. Bummer. I love Keens, but this is the second pair of shoes from them that I haven't liked much.
Too hard to put shoe on. Opening small
Good, solid shoe, but opening for putting shoe on is way too small. Quite difficult to put the shoes on. Perhaps my pair is defective. I'd tell a friend the shoe is good but to be wary of buying the shoes if they are hard to put on. I thought the opening would loosen up with time, but several weeks later, it is still small and tight.

New blue neoprene lining looks faded
I bought these for white water rafting and hiking under waterfalls. The arch on one of the shoes had a seam from the factory mold that rubbed into my foot and caused a blister within 5 minutes of wearing it around the house. I was also disappointed in the blue coloring of the shoe. I love the blue and brown color combination, but the blue fresh out of the box looked like it had been set out in the sun for weeks and faded. It was also difficult to get them on and off which was frustrating. When I'm camping, I don't want to struggle with getting shoes on and off. I do like the reported durability of the the shoe and believe it would have had good traction. I also liked that the toes were protected on the front of the shoe and on the sides. With many sandles my little toe tends to pop out of the side, but they were fine on these shoes. I bought Keen's after reading lots of reviews and I do believe they make good products, but they have a few kinks to work out. I returned them to the store and am hoping to have better luck next time.
Great but does it stack up to competitor
The Keen is a good shoe - but I find myself NOT choosing to wear them. I bought them about a year ago and have only worn them a few times. When I am grabbing a travel/hiking/adventure shoe, I continue to grab the Chaco Z/2. My feet tend to get hot and sweaty in the Keen, and if you are in water or loose dirt of any kind, you'll get a rock in the keen, and getting it out is obnoxious - You have to stop what you're doing and fish the sucker out. I work as a river guide in the summers, and simply couldn't handle the hot and rock-holding keen. Whether hiking, rafting, traveling, etc - I would ALWAYS choose the Chaco over the Keen. If you're just doing pavement pounding maybe they'll be a good fit - that is if you don't mind sliding sweaty feet.
The keen is a good shoe - I can't fault it that - but it seems that there are simply better options for the same price range.

Comfortable but clunky
The Newports are comfortable like most Keens, and I love the toe bumpers. Also, they are pretty durable and easy to clean off. However, they feel clunky and heavy if I wear them for very long. Also, they are NOT great shoes to wear to the beach. I made that mistake and it was irritating to keep taking them off to get the sand out (they take a bit of work to get on and off, so it is not easy to keep taking them off to get stuff out of them). Also, my feet tend to get hot and sweaty in them when I use them for hiking unless I wear them with socks to wick away the moisture, which kind of defeats the purpose of wearing hiking sandles.
Nice but not for all activities
These sandals are great for water activities; whether it's getting in and out of a kayak or playing on the beach with your kids. I do not recommend them for any sort of hiking activity though. It is very easy to get small stones, pebbles or gravel into these shoes and VERY difficult to get them out. I would basically have to remove the entire shoe, shake it out and put it back on, only to have it happen immediately again. I'm not totally disappointed in them they just don't suit what I bought them for.
Slippery when wet
Good for Costa Rica-- EXCEPT for walking on wet, hard surfaces. You'd think shoes touted as water sandals would have better traction! Bordered on treacherous in rocky river beds. Fellow rafters complained of the same problem with their sneakers however. Worked adequately for hiking during the frequent showers. Dirt & rocks do get into the shoe, but easily removed by dunking you foot into the multitude of streams & swishing around.
Little rocks are annoying...
Bought this for a trip to costa rica a few years ago. Very comfortable, no break-in required. However, for being "river" shoes these were terrible! Super slippery and tiny little rocks get in the sandal from the back end and get stuck under your toes and the balls of your feet. You have to keep taking them off to empty them out. Really annoying for outdoor use, great for casual.
good for some not for all........
I bought these thinking they would be my hiking, biking and water shoe.Turns out they are not great for hiking or water.They trap rock and debris and take a long while to dry out.Great for biking and around town.I bought black and extended my wearing season by wearing them with black socks. If you need that all around shoe, look at another shoe.
