The Only Shoes I Wear
I am amazed at how quickly I have fallen in love with these shoes. I have had them for seven months but could not have parted with them after one week.
I was looking for a shoe that I could wear all day, which I begin on my feet managing a coffee shop, and end on my feet working with horses. These shoes last me from 6:00am to at least 8:00pm with absolutely no problem, and I often have to remind myself to take my shoes off when I get home; I NEVER feel anxious to pull them off and rest my feet.
Outside of the pure comfort from day one, the shoes also look great at work whether I'm wearing jeans, kackis, or nicer slacks, and they transition well to going on short hikes or hanging out on the weekend.
I have found them great for working with horses: they are comfortable enough that I can run for short distances on uneven or loose terrain when I am exercising a horse from the ground, and the classic Keen toe keeps me safe from the occasional horse mis-step. When my shoes get too dusty from the barn, I simply wipe them clean with a damp towel and they look good as new. Because I do this often, the leather is probably more likely to dry out, but with occasional light conditioning I've had no problems.
I wrote that they do not feel true to width because I have wide feet and these shoes fit me perfectly. So I'm happy with them! But I wonder if someone with a more average or narrow foot may find that they are too roomy in the toe.
Another slight inaccuracy is that the "black" does not really look black; rather, it looks more like a dark chocolate compared to the more brown version that is offered. It doesn't matter to me because I think they look great, but an online buyer may be surprised. They actually provide a good alternative to the more standard brown that you find in boots and trail shoes (like the brown that is offered.) If you are still a brown-shoe type of person like I am, these still work in essence.
My only other warning for a potential buyer is that they lack a heavy tread, which you can see from the picture. This is a trend with Keen; you either get a heavy sole or a nearly-smooth one. So far they have worked well for me. My biggest concern was slipping at work when I walk quickly through areas with spilled water, but I haven't had an incident yet. But if you're looking for something with a more rugged sole, these may not the shoes for you. However, these soles can also be a plus because they do not hold and track in dirt as much as a pair of boots.
The bottom line is that these are a very versatile and comfortable pair of shoes. I often have to force myself to wear the other shoes in my closet, just so that I don't feel bad about having spent the money on them.
don't want to wear anything else anymore
I'm really picky about my shoes, and need to have at least one very comfortable pair for lots of walking and time spent on my feet. This means they need to have adequate contouring and a moderate amount of rigidity. While the look had to grow on me, these shoes fit the bill. I love them so much I wear these shoes pretty much 7 days a week which wasn't my intention when I bought them.
I'm also impressed by how well they manage my foot sweat. I have excessively sweaty feet (hyperhydrosis) and while the sides of the shoe are waterproof leather, the combination of the top part of the shoe being breathable leather and the linings material being chosen for good wicking keeps my feet surprisingly dry and odour free.
Although I said they were true to size and width, I bought them in person, so I knew how they were going to fit. That said, they were the size I usually buy for casual footwear. I like plenty of room to wiggle my toes, and they have plenty of toe room. I did find the rear of the shoe was rather deep after my first day of wearing so that it rubbed the back of my ankle a bit, so I added my custom molded 3/4 insole which served the dual purpose of raising my heel just enough, and making the shoe even more comfy. This is to say they were comfy before, but my use of insoles make them so comfortable, I hate wearing any other shoes now. My other shoes are not as wide and don't accommodate the insoles as well. I'll just have to buy more Keens!
Anyway, bottom line is that these shoes handle walking all afternoon, or 9 hour days on my feet in a workshop with comfy dry feet.
Best shoes *ever*. I'm serious.
I love these shoes so much I literally have three pairs of them in different colors. I have high insteps but no other foot issues. I've also got, um, six or seven other models of Keens with which to compare the Presidio, and they're my favorite, with the Targhee coming in second.
The only shoe I have that might compare is a pair of Vasque hiking boots in which I've walked nine or ten miles at a clip. If I had to be on my feet, I'd grab the Vasques or one of my pairs of Presidios.
I've just about beat my first pair to death. I've had them for three years and they've been to London, Peru and Egypt. Also many places in Nashville, Tennessee. You'd never know it - they don't quite look new, but they certainly don't look as well-used as they are.
The Presidio has a vaguely orthopedic look, which makes them maybe not the best choice for folks who are super-fashion conscious, but they're not ugly - I have a pair in black I wear for work occasions or anytime I have to do a lot of walking and to look presentable.
Every now and then REI will put different colors of these on sale. My favorites are a shade called 'Pool' that REI doesn't make any more, but I can certainly tell you you can simply not go wrong with these shoes. Oh, and I've gotten mine soaking wet before as well...they simply don't show water or stains.
I have to go up half a size in this model, and the inconsistency among models is my one complaint with Keen...but overall I'm thrilled with their products, especially when they're on sale :)
One of my favorite shoes ever !
A couple of years ago, I had seen several people out and about wearing these shoes, and had admired how they looked. We then booked a backpacker style trip to Japan, Vietnam, and South Korea. We were pretty much all packed up and ready to go, when I had a panic realization that none of the shoes I was planning to bring would really do triple duty in the 3 countries we were visiting. I wanted something that would be "city" enough to go with dark jeans, scarf and sunglasses in Tokyo, and sturdy enough to hike in the Marble Mountains of Vietnam.
Off we ran to REI. I bought these shoes in the darker color (I think they go with more clothing), with 2 days to spare, and one day to break them in, before our Asian walkathon began. I wore them to work the next day, where I walk around all day. Note to Special K, the reviewer from Nashville: I experienced a pretty bad pain from the tongue on one shoe that first day, and I was really nervous about taking them on our trip. However, that's all they needed. The next day on our trip, they fell completely broken in, and I have worn them on so many occasions since, in rain, sun, and even snow!
I'm about to buy another pair with my member coupon! Yeah!
My Feet Are Happy!
I purchased these Keens as my first pair for work. I need shoes that are supportive in the arch, non-slippery sole, lightweight, comfortable, durable, and being super cute doesn't hurt either. These shoes fit the bill! When I tried them on in the store they felt just a hair too big, but now that I've worn them for a week or so they actually feel just perfect. My feet have room in the front but the shoes definitely are not too big; I believe it's just the cut of the shoe. The only thing is that since they are made out of this suede-ish leathery material, they are not as stain/water resistant as I would like, but they are so comfortable and lightweight it's not a big deal. The pads of my feet used to get so sore and achy after work (lots of hours in a huge cement warehouse with cold floors) but haven't been sore at all since I began wearing them. They are extremely well-made, high-quality shoes and fit as if they were molded just for my feet. The cushiony insoles are the best I've felt by far over all other work shoes I've tried. The rubber toe is durable and protective. Will definitely buy another pair. Buy these with confidence as you will love them. Not cheap but absolutely worth every penny.
very durable and comfortable
Okay these have to be one of the best pairs of shoes I've ever gotten. I am a size 7 so I buy a 7.5 shoe, and these fit me like a dream the second I tried them on. I've worn them in the city, in the country, on day hikes, on multiple geocaching trips, in rain and hot weather. They hold against water very well if you accidentally step in water for a moment, and clean well. The leather soles surprised me with how adaptable and comfortable they are. In August I went on a weekend hike in the Oregon Jungle doing some geocaching where there wasn't a trail other than where we made it, and these carried me through some fairly gnarly places. I logged maybe twenty hours of serious backpacking that weekend, with a 45lb pack frame and didn't get a single blister. I haven't tried them in snow or serious hot weather, but from what I've done with them so far in the last three months they have been worth every penny.
The only trouble I have with these is that I can't buy fifty pairs of them like another reviewer said, and that the tread wears down fairly quickly. I'd love to see Keens start using Vibrams.
I second that opinion!
I've only had these shoes for a couple weeks but I wear them almost every day. This was the best purchase I could have made! I'm on my feet a lot at work and these are as comfortable as my running shoes but don't look dumpy.
I wear size 11 and was a little nervous about the "half size up" recomendations since I had to buy the men's Keen Targhee II for my hiking boots to be comfortable. But these shoes are great and fit me true to size.
Yes, the "black olive" is a dark brown but I tried them on in the store first and the color was perfect, even the blue/teal stitching. I love the toe guard on all Keens b/c I'm always bumping into things.
I can't speak to the durability yet but if they are anything like my hiking boots I've had those for 4 years and they're still going strong.
The only thing I had to break in was the top of the tongue rubbed the top of my ankle, but after a couple days I didn't notice it any more.
I wish I could afford other colors but black olive is pretty versatile.
Best Shoes I've ever tried on
Wow! The first time I have ever tried on these shoes, I just knew right from the beginning that these would be great! I have never had a pair of shoes feel so good on my feet when just trying them on. Usually you have to break in a pair of new shoes until they feel just right, but these shoes are so comfortable and really make me feel great! They are very cute and stylish. I am planning on recommending one of these pairs of shoes to my mom. These shoes are wide enough and very nice and snug. They don't make my feet look big (and I purchased the 9.5!). Although these shoes a little pricey, I know that it is worth the price. My mom has always said that it is better to pay for the expensive pair of shoes so that your feet do not hurt and that these shoes last, than to pay for a cheap knock off that will cause pain and you'll end up buying another pair of shoes within a few short months! This is one of the best purchases that I have ever spent!
great trekking shoe
I purchased these shoes last year specifically to wear on a 3 week solo backpacking trip around the Middle East. I was traveling in December so needed shoes that would be warm but also comfortable. I have a history of plantar fascitis and was a little worried about it flaring up on my trip. Fortunately, I didn't need to worry. Except for a pair of flip-flops for the shower, these were the only shoes I wore for 3 weeks straight and my feet didn't hurt once. I purchased them in brown which stood up great to the desert dirt and sand. These shoes have been inside pyramids, on camels, on horses, hiking through the ancient city of Petra, and all over downtown Cairo. I even climbed Mt. Sinai, an elevation of 7,500ft, in them. When I got home I rinsed them off, wiped them down, and they're good to go again. I would recommend these shoes to anyone with foot problems who needs a comfortable shoe but doesn't want to sacrifice style.
I bought these shoes with almost one thing in mind... the width. I have semi-wide feet and I hate having my feet crammed into shoes. These are perfect with plenty of wiggle room. The rubber toes are great and offer and added ruggedness that improves the life and look of the shoe after a lengthy time of abuse.
I am buying a pair for my sister who is always twisting her ankles. I had her try them on and she said that they felt more stable than almost any other show that she has tried on.
This is a well designed shoe that I absolutely love besides one downfall. They dye my socks brown. Now I have many pairs of socks with brown stains covering the sole of my sock. One upside to this I suppose is that I know can tell a right sock from a left sock, not that I ever needed to care. :)
