Keen Targhee II

Altrec

While the most important characteristic in Keen's Targhee II trail running shoe is the stability, the innovative breathable comfort steals the show when you're on the go. Unlike other trail running shoe manufacturers who opt for using the same waterproof membranes found on practically every running shoe on the market, Keen took a route less traveled and used a new eVENT® membrane fabric with Dry System Technology for better breathable comfort in wet weather. The difference is one that you can feel--most waterproof/breathable technologies require that perspiration condenses to moisture before it can pass through the membrane. eVENT® membrane fabric allows sweat to pass through in vapor form, so your feet don't feel soaked in sweat like you would in other weatherproof trail running shoes. Besides the dry socks, the Targhee II is exceptionally stable. In the heel you'll find Keen's S3 heel support structure, a special shock-absorbing design that's engineered to support your foot on impact, minimizing your chances of twisting an ankle on rolling terrain. Keen's Targhee II is a great shoe for covering big distances on damp days throughout the spring, summer and fall.

Features:

  • Aggressive blown rubber traction tread for all-terrain stability
  • Groundbreaking Keen eVENT waterproof and breathable membrane
  • Impact-absorbing S3 support structure along midsole
  • Named the Best Value lightweight hiking shoe in the 2007 Backpacker magazine Gear Guide
  • Rugged and waterproof leather upper

Nice comfortable shoes!

Rating:****
I've been wearing a pair of Keen Newport H20 sandals for the last 3 years and they're my favorite pair of footwear for Southern California. I bought the Targhee II for my 6-month trip coming up in March. I'll be to Europe, Asia and NZ. There'll be lots of city walking and a few alpine hiking trips with distances over 100 miles each. I'll be carrying a light backpack (25-28 lbs). Since my 3-yr old Keen sandals are still in good shape, I expect these should last the trip w/o a problem. The quality is typical Keen, which is superb. The mid-section is a tad tight with hiking socks. As they're relatively new, maybe they'll stretch more with time. The foot bed is stiffer than my Newport H20 but still comfortable, which is what I want for this long trip. As for the waterproofing, I've yet to test it. I'll give another review upon my return next Fall. Happy trails...

Better than average shoe; good looking. I am size 11.5. The people at Zappos knew their business and recommended a half size larger. When I got them, they were a perfect fit, with a medium weight sock, and a perfect width at D medium width standard. I have only ever had one pair of shoes fit this well before, and that was a pair of sneakers when I was a child. The reason I put four stars in the look shouldn’t deter you from buying; it is me blaming myself for the wrong color combination. Service and delivery were great. Please understand that the rating I give are a bit off, because I bought the shoe larger based on customer service recommendation, and I'm glad I did.

Great Shoe

Rating:*****
I bought these shoes to replace a pair of Merrells that I've had for about 4 years. I haven't taken them hiking yet (we'll be hitting some trails in Germany in September), but I've been wearing them at least once a week to break them in. They feel great and I look forward to getting them on the trail. One thing that drives me a little nuts are the loops on the back heel - if you're wearing pants they'll occasionally get hung up on the loops. No big deal, though - I could always cut them off if it becomes an annoyance. So far love the shoes and Altrec had them for a great price.

Nice outdoorsy shoe! Great looking shoe and the waterproof aspect is top notch. The sizing does tend to run a bit small...so you'll probably have to size UP from the size you normally wear. The heel adjustment strap (attached to the top lacing) doesn't seem to work as designed. The shoe does tend to have a little "play" in the heel...allowing your heel to move slightly. It can feel like the shoe will slip off unless you get it really tight. I do have a relatively new pair so I am hoping that will go away once the shoe has been "broken in." Other than that, it's a really nice shoe.

great shoes but size them for fit carefully

Rating:*****
I just bought my first pair of Targhee II low cuts after having good luck with my pair of Targhee II high tops. My normal shoe size is a 10, but my high tops were a 10.5 -- and were still a bit snug if I wanted to wear thick socks, but nothing I dwelled. For my low cuts, I decided to try an 11 and really like them much better. I need a bit of room. I have a pair of Keen Austins that are a 10. Pretty difficult for me to predict Keen sizes, and that makes it tough when I'm trying to order online.

This is my 4th pair of Keen Targhees. I'm a real estate developer and need a good strong waterproof shoe on many job sites. They are also the only shoe I'll wear while flying coast to coast. I've literally worn the soles off these shoes and then retire them to outside work shoes at home. Order one size larger than you would normally. The comfort is awesome. I have a narrow foot and have never had a problem with any Keen product (I have several pairs). In fact these shoes have helped my heel spur problem. My children also wear Keen now. Overall, a great product!

Great shoes!

Rating:*****
I'm a nurse and work on my feet 10-12 hours a day and needed a pair of shoes that didn't make my feet ache at the end of the day. I also underpronate and have plantar fasciitis, and since my other Keen shoes work really well, I thought I'd try these shoes. I am SO glad I did. I feel like I'm walking on pillows and no aching feet when I get home! The only 'bad' part is my feet get pretty hot, but they still feel great! They are very worth it...thanks Keen and Altrec for sending these great shoes right away!!!

Incredible comfort and looks... Just size up.

Rating:*****
I love the comfort of this shoe. I am a high school science teacher and am on my feet all day. After wearing these shoes all day, my feet felt great! They work great in class and for a casual night out as well as on the trail. On the trail they are sturdy, grip well and feel like the extension of my foot they should be. I am a 10.5 in my New Balance runners. I go with the wide foot model. The Targhee II size I bought was an 11.5. So, if you have a wide foot, size up.

Great shoes - These fit great, have great arch support (I'm getting to where all I buy is Keens now, great cushioning and good looks. My feet k-i-l-l me at work, 12 hr. shifts on concrete. Finding shoes that get me thru the day with the least amount of misery is always a challenge. My only complaint is the laces loosen up too much and you lose your support, so I need to get a new pair of them. No biggie. I end up getting new laces with almost all the Keen shoes I've bought: great shoes, cheap laces.

awesome shoe!

Rating:*****
The first time I bought this shoe, I paid full price at a shoe store at my local mall. I loved the shoe in every way; it is the most comfortable footwear I have ever owned! I wear them to work, kicking around my yard, and on my weekend outdoor excursions...in every situation they keep my feet dry and comfortable. When it came time to buy a new pair I found your site and was happy to find I could buy the same awesome shoe for a much lower price than I paid at the mall. Thanks!

DO NOT BUY THESE BOOTS!

Rating:*
In the 5 months I've had these boots I've had to glue the soles 3 times and now the stitching is coming apart. I don't even do much serious hiking. I could have paid half the price for High Techs or Merrells and they would be showing little wear at this point. Keen is highly overrated and an inferior product.
Pete at Altrec on 09/23/2009
Rating:**
I got these shoes today, and took me about 5 minutes to realize that the fit is horrible. They are way too wide, and they feel real loose around the heel. Plus, the upper could be a lot nicer. For the price, stay away.
Anonymous at Zappos.com on 09/15/2009
Rating:**
I have had two pairs of these. The first was replaced when, after about a week, a lace loop blew out. The second is failing prematurely due to delamination of the toe cap. Otherwise, the shoes are very comfortable.

wore out fast

I had theses shoes for about three months and they were very comfortable at first. Then the soles wore out.

Watch the size when ordering! I tried some Targhee II's on at a local outdoor shop. They had my size, 11 1/2, but they didn't fit, too tight, they didn't have any 12's in stock. So, I got on Zappos and bought the 12's. I never wear 12's, and yet they're still too tight, may not work out. My wife has owned Keen's for many years and has been very pleased with them, my first try.
