Sensitive feet Loves Keen Venice

RE: KEEN Footwear Venice Sandal (Women's) - Color (Size): Bossa Nova/Black Olive (10.5)Let me start by saying - I LOVE going barefoot; my toenails and feet are sensitive to everything. I bought a cheap pair of Teva-like sandals a couple of years ago. Fortunately, they fit very nicely and I loved those sandals to death till they wore out. I have looked for something similar for a long time to no avail. BUT THEN I saw Keens!! I accidentally came across a website where Keens were featured. I took a look, they’re kind of expensive and almost bought a pair right then. But something told me to wait and read more reviews, I’m glad I did.The best thing about reading reviews is that someone has tried them out and made comments, good or bad. 98% of the reviews said Keens are comfortable, practical and very, very stylish. So I was sold, however one review pointed me to Rock Creek website. Low and behold, my KEEN Venice Sandal was on SALE in size 10.5 (I actually wear 10, but that’s OK!!!) I couldn’t believe the price offered YES, YES, YES; these sandals are what everyone says they are. The color is the pretty Bossa Nova/Black Olive, looks like the picture and not at all bulky as the Keen Newport according to reviewers. The sole is cushy like marshmallows, the fabric is not scratchy but soft and the width is roomy at the toes yet still guides the foot. I will be using this shoe to workout on the elliptical machine and for looong walks. I'll be back to comment after I’ve worn them a bit!

sizing has changed!

Over the past 6 or 7 years I've owned 3 pairs of Keen shoes (2 pairs H2 Venice sandals and 1 pair of maryjanes). I've found them to be comfortable and readily wearable from day-1. I recently purchased a new 4th pair of Keen's (jade green H2 Venice; same size as the previous ones) but the fit was a half size too small. When I compared their size to my older Keens and they were clearly smaller. The length was measurably shorter and foot-bed was cramped and uncomfortable. I exchanged the too small sandals for a pair that's a half size bigger and the larger size fit just fine. REI's blurb about these sandals should include a notation indicating that Keen's sizing system has changed and they now run a bit smaller.

Also, these new sandals (fresh out of the box) have a very strong plastic smell (kind of like a "new car smell"). I imagine this will go away after a while. I'm going to put em outsidefor a few days to air out. Nevertheless, it's not pleasant and I don't feel good about those out-gasing chemicals escaping into the environment. None of my previous Keen's smelled strongly of plastic. Seems like Keen's manufacturing process could use some additional attention to detail.

Good sandals for medium-high arches

I have medium-high arches and a recurring plantar fasciitis problem due to a collapsing arch in one foot. I must wear shoes with good arch supports at all times to be comfortable. I wear a size 8 and have wide feet -- so I have a hard time finding good supportive shoes that are wide enough. Dansko's are great, 1803's are great, and Keens are wonderful for more casual wear. I have 3 pairs of the Venice H2s in different fun colors and wear them everywhere. They have good arch support, don't chafe my feet, and can withstand a light hike on even terrain. They aren't supportive enough for a tougher hike where it's rocky, but then I wear a pair of Keen hiking shoes for that. I also have 2 pairs of the Keen Zerraport shoe that appears to be discontinued, but you can still find them on . They have a similar fit, but are cuter, and look better with skirts and such. I love Keen shoes and recommend them for their arch support, width (for wider feet), and overall different/innovative looksl

Hate to say it, but: Better than Teva

I admit I've been a devout Teva sandal wearer for more than a decade, but I have to say, I've been disappointed with two previous purchases (blisters!). Wanting to get closed-toe hiking/water sandals for my Rocky Mtn./Teton/Yellowstone trip, I tried several on in two different stores. These Keens felt the best, so while at REI I bought them (of course, NOW they're on sale... after my trip!!). They were great! Used them for trail hiking/walking, rock-hopping, etc. Very comfortable, breathable, nice fitting, easy on/off, and no blisters! Wore socks with them on a couple of cold nights and my feet stayed warm. Haven't worn them enough to gauge durability yet. The only complaint, like others have, is with sand and small pebbles getting stuck; but that can be said for almost any sandal.

Final note: Had to buy a 1/2 size larger; it's definitely best to try shoes on in the store.
Kamz at REI on 09/09/2009
I ordered this shoe, a Keen Whisper, a Teva Omnium and a Merrell Cambrian Emme. Tried them all on and walked around the house for a while comparing each one. This was the easy winner. The whisper was fine, but a little bulkier, not as attractive. The Merrell was probably the cutest one and comfortable insole, but the straps and mesh over the toes was itchy. Felt awesome with socks but I don't want to wear socks with my sandals! The Omnium was very bulky & just didn't feel good. This Venice H2 felt like I was barefoot, but better. The color goes great with jeans. I've put my summer-shoe-quest on hold because I'm pretty sure I'll be wearing these almost every day. Sending the others back. I have a narrow foot, usually wear an 8 or 8 1/2. The 8s are too small for me in Keens but 8 1/2 is perfect.

Great for camping & day hikes

These are great for camping, day hikes & general wear. I dragged them through the Badlands in South Dakota and Glacier Nat'l Park in Montana, and wore them pretty much everywhere all summer. They go in and out of the water without a problem and dry quickly. They have great traction and seem quite durable.

My only complaint is that I was hoping they would breathe a little more. My feet are usually hot. Despite the seemingly open construction, my feet felt a bit "stuffy" on those hot & humid days.

Another great point to these shoes is that I have a wide foot & these fit great. The adjustable elastic strap makes a huge difference - these will work for wide, regular & narrow (my daughter's feet are narrow & they fit her just as well as me after adjusting the straps).

Best shoes EVER!

I bought these shoes three years ago for a trip to Lake Powell, which would include hiking. I wore them every day, for every reason and was ALWAYS happy with them. I bought my father a pair for his birthday. I recommended them to my sister. They have lasted through three years of me wearing them every chance I had - which in Utah was quite a bit. They are extremely comfortable, especially for someone like myself with wide feet, high arches and a tendancy for tendonitis. I never had ANY problems with my feet or lower back while in these shoes. I am on my way today to buy a new pair, actually. I've worn these so much and on so many hikes - I've worn right through the soles! Luckily, it took a long time!

Love these sandals

I bought these shoes for a trip to Puerto Vallarta and I fell in LOVE! They were all I wore there (except for flipflops to the pool) hiking, strolling, and exploring. I've worn them almost EVERY day since. Sincerely - like 80% of my life since then! I've had them for 1.5 years and they are just now about ready to replace - only because the tread is smoothing out. I wear them with and without socks. I have NO foot discomfort in them - though occasionally, my jeans may kick up a stone off the playground (I'm a teacher) and into the sandal. AND - to clean them I just toss them in the washer! :)

They feel like wearing tennis shoes in a sandal format. They have been/ are perfect for me!
misty416 at REI on 02/02/2010

Love these!

I bought this to bike in during the hot, humid east coast summer using toe clips on my pedals. I wanted something with a closed toe but breathable and this shoe is it! It slides right in and out and I always feel safe in case of emergency stops. I did try to wear them hiking once and it was ok, except the bottom really doesn't have a lot of tread, it's pretty smooth. I also played tennis in them and got a wicked blister on the bottom of my toe, so not best for that either. When I went for walks over an hour long my shins started to hurt but for casual walking and wear around they are super comfortable and cute.

Great active sandals

I love these sandals. I have had Tevas for many years but as I get older they don't seem to give enough support for long days on my feet anymore. These Keens are cute, comfortable, waterproof, and they protect my feet well. I bought these for a trip to Key West where I was going to be sight seeing, biking, and going to the beach. These were perfect. Also, I personally like this style better than the other style because it is a bit more open and stylish. The only problem is the cost, however these are really THAT good and worth the cost. Also, keep an eye out for sales and you may be able to save [$] (I did).

Negative Reviews:

I tried on a pair of Venice H2 sandals in a shoe store, and liked them, but they didn't have the color I wanted. So I was excited to find them on Backcountry.com, and for $20 less than the shoe store. I already knew I needed a half size larger than my usual, because I had tried on the identical shoes. What I didn't realize, though, was that trying them on with socks on in the store was different from wearing them barefoot at home. There is a seam that runs the length of inside of the top of the shoe, and it left a painful indentation in the top of my foot. To be fair, I am very sensitive to seems (I wear all of my socks inside out) so this may not be a problem for those with tougher feet. But for me, the bottom line is that I'm glad Backcountry.com had a good return policy, because these shoes definitely need to go back.

Did I buy the wrong shoe?

I bought this shoe (a half size bigger as advised) based on the raving reviews on here. I just checked the box to make sure I bought the same shoe everyone is talking about here. I decided to put them to the test in San Francisco since I will need them for a month long trip later this year. By the end of Day 2 (I had to use them to walk for 4 days), I was limping on both feet and had chafes all over my heels and ankles- I even wore band aids from Day 1 just to be proactive. I am returning them and going to look for a pair that I can wear longer for 2 days without being in pain- and hopefully the next pair will actually be cute! They were comfortable the first day. But things went downhill very quickly after that. Very disappointed in these shoes.
Sammyt27 at REI on 09/09/2008

stinky

This shoe is very comfortable, but I have three major problems with the shoes:
1. They STINK! Honestly, my other shoes don't smell bad, but the stench on these after I wear them for a trip is pretty awful.
2. They are hot and they are so open that they're pretty useless unless you are on a paved road, because your feet get so dirty with them.
3. They get sweaty during use and your foot inside them begins to slip around.

This shoe is a really fun color and it's great that you can wear them in the water and that they feel comfortable, but I would suggest that you find another shoe, because the cons on these outweigh the pros.

falling apart already

I had these sandals for 2 1/2 years now and I wore them on a couple of water backpacks and around camp probably 20times.The soles are already unglued, the elastic on the right one wont stay snug around foot anymore.I'm not sure what the life expectancy of these types of sandals should be but for [$] a pair I was expecting more than 2 years worth of wear.On the other hand, they're comfortable and cute but I wont buy another pair

No quality control

These shoes were terrible! The sole on one shoe was so warped it wouldn't sit flat on the floor. I thought it would even out when I put them on. Boy was I wrong! After about 15 min. of wear it pinched a nerve in my foot and my big toe went numb. I have friends that swear by these shoes. All I can say is they must not have very good quality control.

Reflections on Rafting on the Rogue

I bought these for a Rogue River Rafting trip. I felt very hip all decked out for my adventure with these good looking water sandals. My toes were protected and they dried quickly. What I found frustrating was after being in the water and then trying to hike they were darn right dangerous! I would not recommend these for rafting or kayaking.

The shoes were too wide, and when I tried to tighten them up, the toe then curled up and the shoes were then too short.

Me Love Keens

I have been an enthusiastic fan of Keens since 2005. I currently own six pairs and I have thrown out two pairs of sandals that wore out. For awhile, I was thinking I'd never wear any other brand of shoe. After all, with their Calistoga-Mary-Jane line, you can look like you're working.

The best thing about Keens was that they were comfortable from the first step and they stay comfortable. Back when I first 'met' Keens, I weighed 100+ more pounds than I do now. My feet were large, size 12, and I had a hard time finding comfortable shoes that fit me. My first pair of Keens were male sandals but, hey, they fit and I was desparate for shoes.

Now, I am back down to size eleven and I have lots of shoe choice.

I might not buy any more Keens. I like Earth Shoes, Naot, Ecco, Merrell. True, the Keens are cheaper. . . but you know what? They wear out extremely fast. I think if you are someone who doesn't actually do a lot of walking, like most Americans, like you get in your car and drive from door to door. . . maybe a pair of Keens would last you a long time. But I don't own a car and I walk quite a lot, at least five miles daily. A pair of Keens don't last more than a few weeks of daily, five-mile walking. The soles wear down super fast. At first, I reasoned that replacing a walking shoe once a month, for someone who easily walks 150 miles a month. . . that's not bad. . . but then I began to notice that the other shoe brands, um, don't wear out so fast. It seems like quite a waste, that the heels wear down so quickly.I don't think I'll buy anymore Keen sandals. . . but I will always buy their Mary Jane styles to be my 'dress' shoes.
TreeMarie at REI on 02/02/2009

I was excited to try out these shoes. I have had other keen shoes and loved them all. These did not have the immediate out of the box fit that my other keens have had. Keens are generally fairly generous in their sizing but these seem to run spot on for sizing. They took a bit of breaking in but now I love these shoes. I can wear them anywhere and they now have that comfortable keen fit I look forward to. I love that my toes are covered ( I'm a big klutz) but it's still a sandal!

Amy R at Backcountry.com on 05/17/2011

comfortable but not good for kayaking

I bought the Keen Venice H2 to replace a pair of Teva that went kaput only after a few month's wear (a strap broke). The Keen sandals are comfortable and good looking, but they are underperforming for what I bought them for -- kayaking. Every time, the sand/pebbles/debris would collect in the foot bed of each shoe. Because of the strap design and the contour of the foot bed, it's hard to get all the sand/pebbles/debris out. The sandals are good for trekking on streets and well-worn trails, but not for some water sports.
OtterGirl at REI on 09/09/2007

Comfortable, cute, but stinky

So I loved these shoes and bought them for backpacking around Asia. I really don't have stinky feet and have alot of shoes I wear without socks, but after a month, these sandals smell aweful--hands down worse than any shoes I've owned for years! The foot bed is soft (and very comfortable) and all sorts of dirt and junk gets imbedded. I've tried scrubbing it out, but no luck. I'm guessing that's a major culprit.
letcy at REI on 03/03/2010

The shoe was really nice, but I just couldn't get it to fit right. One size was too loose the next smaller was too tight. I was really disappointed that I couldn't manage to have one or the other fit. I have to say though that the return policy is great and I was pleased with the service... just wish the shoe fit.
