Keen Winthrop boot in black is all leather shaft on the outside, wool lined on the inside. I have wide, flat, over pronate feet (always feet/shoe issues) and have to be picky. I own several Keen shoes. The fit on these boots is like the Bronx or Keen Newport sandals. Where toe box is wide, soles flare out on outer and inner side to help if you over pronate. Very comfortable for me on the width, may be too wide for narrow feet, normal width would definitely be able to wear thicker boot socks if you wanted to, but they are not necessary. They were comfortable out of the box. Now the calves, well, they are a bit tight, not restricting but certainly cannot tuck pants in and kind of tight in that a ring would be left on my leg after wearing. Otherwise they would have been great funky looking casual boots to wear with jeans or with skirt. When you have wide feet and shoes are comfy when you first put them on then you know these are good for the long run. Too bad my calves are a bit too big otherwise these would have been keepers. The zipper did stay up with them partially zipped. Don't know what the elastic bands on the shaft in the back are for. Certainly would be hard to use these to further adjust leather shaft for tighter fit. They did give the boot a good look, though.

So happy with my boots

Rating:*****
I have been pining for these for some time and finally went for it. I just received these today so I can't speak for their performance yet but I am extremely pleased with their appearance. This is my third pair of Keens - I have the Portola shoes in red and Portland mary janes in bison. I got these boots in Cordovan and am very pleased with the color - it's a nice deep maroon; the picture is an accurate depiction. The beds do have a different feel than my other Keens but I'm sure they'll form a bit to my feet or I'll get used to it. The height is great, they hit about mid-calf. Since I haven't seen an actual measurement while shopping for this, I measured the exact height and it's 12.5 inches from the bottom of the sole to the top of the boot. Also, I ordered these after business hours on 11/17 and selected free shipping - I received them this morning on 11/20 via FedEx. I do live in the Pacific Northwest, a state away from Altrec, but still...that's some fast shipping for free!

Keens keep my crabby feet happy -- I think I will get many years of good use from these very comfy boots!\r\n\r\nPositives: The oiled leather on these is exceptionally rich and supple, and the wool lining is cozy but not itchy. I love the shaft height -- these go up a little higher than most "middy" boots. (I was worried that these might be tight on my calves, but they are very comfortable for this size-12 lady!)\r\n\r\nI usually wear a 9, but am happy I sized up to a 9-1/2. Arch support is very good, removable insoles are nice, and my orthotics fit in with no problem. The outer sole is nice and thick with a good rugged tread.\r\n\r\nCons: The style is definitely "rugged," as is typical of Keens. Good with jeans & pants, not-so-good with a skirt. But I bought these as a nice-looking snow boot, and who wears a skirt in a blizzard?

Great "around town" boot!

Rating:*****

I live in Minnesota and was looking for a boot that could take me on errands around town and sledding with my kids. The boots kept me warm around town and even snowshoeing in northern Minnesota. However, when I shoveled the driveway and went to an outdoor wolf preserve, my toes got cold after about 30 minutes. (I guess that's what clompy Sorels are for.) But I still give it 5 stars since they are very easy on & off (they have a zipper) and are very cute. I normally wear an 8 1/2 shoe and I bought this boot in a 9, which is perfect for adding a pair of thick socks. Keep in mind that unless you are super-skinny, you won't be able to tuck in your pants, so the cute criss-cross detailing in the back may be hidden from view. But you will know it is there...

Love 'em!

Rating:****

I love these boots! They look so rugged yet not goofy! I wear 'em everywhere; with a skirt to church, with capris in the winter & you can wear them with jeans of course! Unless you have 'skinny' jeans, there is NO way you can tuck your jeans in the boot! It's too tight otherwise. They look great any way you want to wear them, but I would really recommend trying on a pair physically before you buy online. The meta tarsal area is somewhat loose but it tight on the calf when you zip up even without tightening the pull straps on back. They take a little breaking in & are crazy warm! Watch you don't over heat yourself; my warmer socks are too hot w/ these boots! I got the cordovan which is more red than the picture shows I think, but they still go with everything!

I like them fine. A little stiff at first but they seem to be breaking in okay. I believe they will be warm enough for winter and I can already confirm that they are waterproof and that they do seem slip resistant so far. I find that I like tucking my jeans inside them versus hanging out, as the wool chafes the top of my calves a bit. I suspect that this will happen less as they break in more and become a bit more ergonomic. I think they look nice and a couple folks have stopped me to ask who made them. The fit is good, and they are comfortable on the ball and heel. Think they are well made and will last a long time.

Coming from California, I wasn't sure what boots to buy. I read reviews for many boots. I was cautious about purchasing because of all the warnings about the narrow shaft not fitting muscular calves. I am a petite 5'4", size 6.5 feet, and have well-developed calves. However, when the boots arrived, they fit with no problems! They zipped easily, had toe wriggle room and felt super comfortable. I could even squeeze a pair of jeans into them and thick socks. The boots fit true to size. Super comfy and seem really well made. While they may not be the most stylish boots to wear with a cute winter skirt, they're pretty great compared to some of the bulky ugliness I've seen out there!

Pretty Boots to Shovel Snow In

Rating:****

Hello,

Well, I read over the other reviews and seem to agree with what most have to say: these are funky looking and functional boots. I can shovel the sidewalk and then go to a local art show opening and still maintain a level of rural-chic.
I can't wear short socks with them, though. When I walked to the store in them (2.2km), the top part rubbed on my legs and I now have two red burn marks that circle the front half of my legs. Lesson learned. I don't let my other boots touch my bare skin, I don't know why I thought I could get away with it with a pair of Keen boots.

I love these boots. I already had the Winthrop clogs, which I wear constantly in the cold (for California) weather, so these are like an extension of those. I am a 7 or 7.5 in Keen, depending on style. These I got in 7.5 and wear them with medium weight socks and Dr. Scholl's Tri-Comfort orthotics. I am narrow at the heel, but somewhat wide at the top with small bunions, and this style fits me well. They look good with skirts, and you can tuck skinny jeans into them, too. I don't mind that they don't come all the way up the calf. That way you can wear knee socks that peek out the top.

great boots, neat looking too

Rating:*****

I got the cordovan and love the color-- it's unique. I have 2 other pairs of shoes from Keen, sandals and sneakers and they fit the same way, perfect. At first they feel wide, but once you get used to them the fit is fine. I agree with others that the top of the calf can be tight... they did stretch a bit and fit fine now. I walked through IKEA for 2+ hours and didn't have a tired back from walking slow. Haven't tried them in slush yet... it's been too cold for the snow to melt here in NH! They keep you feet warm too.

cute boot

Rating:**

I ordered this boot in hopes for more comfort and style for the winter months in Minnesota! I was excited to try them on! As I did the zipper did not reach the top, my calves are too well shaped at the top for it to close!! I also noticed when i walked with the boot the heel pressed into my achillies tendon, making it uncomfortable experience, I wished they would have fit and have been more flexible!

Rating:**
I have about five different pairs of Keen shoes and these boots were a disappointment from this company. The shaft is super tight and they are very inflexible at the ankle. I sent them back.

looks aren't everything

Rating:*

The boot looks great. Unfortunately the footbed is not comfortable like Born or Merrill an the calf is so narrow I could barely get them zipped.

Didn't work for me - Keen- Winthrop Boot. These boots are very nice looking and should have been great for inclement Pacific Northwest weather. But the shaft of the boot if very short. Which is not attractive. And the shaft of the boot is too small for my calf. It pinched me. So for both those reasons I returned them. Still looking for a hardy winter boot.

Okay, but not the best - This boot was alright except for the calf area. The top of the boot rubbed the back of my legs raw, even with taller socks. Also, they weren't too warm in anything colder then 25 or so. I ended up wearing my work boots for the rest of the winter.
