Swiss Army Knife of Tarp Shelters
| Rating: | ![]() |
| I've used this shelter for car camp/base camp setups over 7 years, totaling about 2 months actual time in use. My favorite uses are to set it up as a picnic table shelter, gear tent, and as a huge vestibule over smaller tents (like Eureka Timberlines) during week long Boy Scout summer camps. It also works out well for snow camps: set it up in the snow (bring long stakes/tie to deadman or tree) and then dig down on the inside, piling the snow on two of the three sides to make a good communal or cooking area. It's much faster than an improvised tarp rig in the snow and the roof pitch can be adjusted to shed snow. Tie it down in the wind, however, and in 40 mph gusts it will roar! The worse features are the overall size and weight (base camp, remember). It is difficult to set it up by yourself, but even a small kid can help a lot by guiding the pole as it makes the setup arc. I'd like to see Kelty make a similar lightweight version with lighter fabric and poles. | |

Kelty Sunshade | |

I used the Kelty Sunshade when camping in hot, sunny conditions in the desert. It was so nice to escape the sun! We had the medium size, and fit 6 people in chairs set right next to each other along the shady edges. Some sort of side wall or two would be nice, as when the sun is at certain angles it comes in from the sides it doesn't provide all that much shade. Most of us had to duck slightly to get under the medium, but we were very happy to have it. The sunshade sets up really easily, and has a nice simple design. Winds were pretty calm, and we had no problems with it blowing around, and we staked only the bottoms of the poles, not the extra lines coming off of it. This sunshade is nice and simple, and gets the job done. Much better than no shade at all!

LOVE THIS SUNSHADE! | |

| We bought this product specifically for a 4 day music festival (Bonnaroo!) We admired our neighbors last year and had to have one for this year. The sunshade was very easy to set up. I would consider it lightweight and compact for traveling, but not backpacking. We have a small two person hiking tent which we set up every night under the sun shade for extra protection against the weather and it worked out perfect. We spent most of the early day at our campsite and the Sunshade provided perfect shade. We also bought a wall accessory which provided not only extra protection from the sun but privacy from other campers. We were able to change clothes and everything inside the Sunshade because of the low to the ground design. I can't see anything to change with this shade its perfect!!!! | |

Prefer over the car shade

Finally broke this out and love it. Had a big backyard party over the weekend and decided to provide some shade for the food. It unexpectedly began to rain. We moved the tables in a little closer and there was still room for a handful of guests to sit at one of the tables and eat. I got the large and am glad I did since it allowed all of the tall guys to walk right in and stand without hitting heads or ducking. I also got the extra wall that is sold separately, which provided shade when the afternoon sun finally reemerged. I debated between this and a car shade and am glad I got this since it is more versatile.

set ups for suckas | |

| The first time I used this I was setting up camp for my friends at a disc golf tournament. It was raining and windy after dumpiing the contents of the bag out I simply spread it out looked at it and began to set it up imediatly. No instructions required self explanitory set up. This thing easily covered the picnic table and provided shelter from the storm as we ate and drank sharing stories into the night. Great for music fests can easily set up small tents underneath so you don't need your rainfly and you don't have to sufficate. | |

| Of all my camping gear this has proved to be one of my very favorites. I've used one for many years. I spend a lot of time drift boating/camping on a beautiful river in the high desert of Oregon. It gives me great shade when there is no where else to escape the sun, which often hits the 90's and 100's. It works equally well when it decides to rain, offering full protection. Other campers who are getting scorched or wet are always envious. | |

Nice. . . | |

This is great to keep in the car. I pulled it out after a bike race last week and we fit a bunch of sweaty cyclists under it. It is hard to stand under though and watch what is going on so I may need to make some extension poles for it. (I only have the medium.)

Windy Conditions | |
| Rating: | ![]() |
We bought this specifically for use at the beach after reading the reviews. We put it to the test at Hilton Head island and I was immediately disappointed. Now we did have a decent, steady wind coming across the beach, but my experience with past Kelty products told me that this sunshade should have been fine.

Windy = No Kelty | |
| Rating: | ![]() |
| The Kelty is great to use on the beach when it's not windy. Unfortunately, unless we just have very bad luck, that's pretty rare when we go to the beach. We've used this about ten times, and the last time was the final straw. Truth be told I wanted to set it on fire. The cords always get tangled in between uses, despite all the clever tricks we've devised. In the wind, one finds oneself chasing the tent around the sand, restaking it and restaking it like Sisyphus, greatly detracting from the whole beach experience. One our last beach trip, we gave up and let the damned thing blow wherever it felt like going. It's also extremely heavy to carry. On the plus side, when it's not windy, on that rare day, it's a great place to hide from the sun to protect your skin, but still enjoy the beach all day. I think it's best used perhaps at a campsite (in a mosquito free zone, of course). | |

Kelty Sunshade | |

Do not buy this if you expect it to last more than one season. It was great the first season--oh by the way, we used it for only two weeks during the season. One of the poles cracked during the second season and we sent it back for a replacement. Instead, Kelty 'fixed' the pole rather than replacing it. Imagine our surprise this year when we arrived at the beach and discovered that the pole was now about 6" longer than the others, making the tent unusable. We called Kelty to get a replacement pole and were told that they were out of stock and also, that they could not take my name and call me when the new poles arrive--they don't do back orders. Extremely poor customer service and product!

Rotted in the sun | |
| Rating: | ![]() |
| This product was worthless. I purchased and used it last summer. When I set it up again this spring it ripped in two places. I sent it to Kelty [...] only to learn that it had rotted in the sun and I only then learned that the product is not guaranteed and can be used only for limited periods in the sun. They did offer to sell me another at a discount. I could find no reason to buy another since it is not sun resistant. | |

The sunshade is easy to set-up and does a great job of shielding its occupants from the sun without baking them via the hothouse effect that some shelters cause. Mine is very durable and has lasted years. Buy the large, the meduim is too small to stand under. Here are the downsides. 1. it is a bit short, i think it is designed for sitting under. 2. The poles are a little on the weak side. Other than those two issues, it works great. I like the irregular design because that allows you to but it up against trees or other fixed objects.

Pretty good sunshade | |
| Rating: | ![]() |
| A good sun shade in it has a large surface area and the legs can be adjusted closer or farther from each other to keep the sun out. Relatively easy setup, except like all 'tents', you have to lay it out. This makes it kinda messy if you are at the beach in the sand. Also, in a moderate breeze, it will sway and lay down on you, so you have to use the guy lines. The poles are solid fiberglass, which makes it heavy. Aluminum poles would be nice. All-in-all it's a good sunshade. | |

No sunburn, but... | |

We used the sunshade to provide shade for our picnic table while camping in the Sierra at about 5500 ft. The sunshade provides a good amount of shade, but that doesn't mean it is cool underneath. It seems to transmit a great deal of the sun's heat. A shady campsite is preferred.

| the kelty sunshade is easy to set up at the beach or over a picnic table when car camping. just watch out for wind. it takes off like a kite so really tie it down well. and if you think you,ve tied it down well, tie it down some more. its pretty durable too. mines been in barbed wire and survived with just a few snags. | |

| I love this product. It allows me to spend time at the beach without wearing excessive clothing. I felt like a king underneath the dome of this shelter. It allows great sightlines for viewing waves, birds and walkers. It is a [*] to set up though. The poles get to the intersection and get stuck. It would be really easy for two. | |

Works great on the beach on nonwindy days. I thought is was fairly easy to set up, but having a helper helps. It will sit over a picnic table pretty well too if you are car camping. Fairly compact when broken down.
