Footprint

Rating:*****

These things are great. It's much easier to clean the footprint than to clean the bottom of your tent. Not sure yet if it will extend the life of the tent floor, but it can't hurt. It's very easy to lay out and doesn't weigh much or take up much room. Peace of mind for me. Hard-core backpackers may not wish to carry one, but casual campers would benefit (particularly if you're the one cleaning it when you get home).

Ya need a footprint, but....

Rating:**

I got the footprint and in so far as being functional it works well, but at the price I find that it would have been just as functional and a lot less expensive to use some rolled plastic or maybe a tarp from a hardware store. The goal is to keep sticks or rocks from tearing the bottom, and to help keep the bottom dry and a less expensive means works great.
Another thing that helps is to rake the area before you lay down the footprint to remove any loose sharp or hard items.
As far as quality goes it seems good so it is not a bad thing to have, just a lot more expensive than doing it yourself.
If using a tarp or plastic just make sure that the edges do not extend out from under the tent so that water will not get between the tent and the footprint.

Yellowstone 6 Footprint

Rating:***

Upon seeing the price of the footprint for the Kelty Yellowstone 6, I really thought I could just purchase a tarp from a hardware store for the same amount of protection. Since Backcountry had it for a percentage off the MSRP, I purchased it. It works great and attaches perfectly to the tent. I've only used it for a 3 day camping trip so far, but it kept the bottom of the tent protected from the terrain and provided a decent barrier from the wet ground. It was easy to clean when we returned home as well. I'd recommend it, I just can't believe I bought a footprint that was 1/4 of the price of the tent.
