Kuhl Rydr Pant -

The men's Rydr Pant by Kuhl stands up to many years of daily use. A jean style pant cut and designed to give you freedom to move in comfort. From the euro-twill brushed cotton with a hint of stretch to the articulated knees and gusseted crotch your constant choice will be the tenacious yet luxurious Rydr mountain pant. Cut roomy for athletes. The vintage patina dyed Rydr is river washed, uniquely giving your pant an individual look as your wear and wash them in your own style. So tough even the pockets are reinforced in those high wear areas. The Rydr stands up to many years of daily use. The Rydr may be the first mountain pant stylish enough for the office, but it longs for weekends in the pursuit of purple mountains' majesties

Fit:

  • Another hallmark of Kuhl design, this feature incorporates the Kuhl Yoke Waistband –it follows the natural contour of the human body. The hips rise in the back and so should your pant! The Free Ryde Waist provides a contour fit to keep the pant in place as you move! The Free Ryde Waist also has a longer length from belt top to crotch for extra room to extend your range during crag hops and bouldering maneuvers.
  • Built for the outdoor athlete with a need for pants with roomier thighs— skiers, bikers,  hikers and rock climbers. Outdoors persons who need extra room to accommodate powerful legs benefit from the wider pant leg for exceptionally functional movement.  Athletik Fit is a foundation of Kuhl’s pant designs for unconstricted movement.
  • Original Kühl yoke system offers unprecedented fit and comfort

Fabric:

  • Made from brushed cotton and stretch suede twill
  • 98% mercerized cotton, 2% stretch suede twill: 10.3 oz./sq. yd
  • The art of joining things in such a way that motion is possible.  Where the knee bends, the elbow crooks, and the shoulders join the trunk and arms, articulated construction builds movement into the design.   This includes gusseted panels (shoulders) and darts –on knees and elbows, darts gather the fabric to articulate those body parts’ natural range of motion.
  • Some of their fabrics feature a fiber that allows for stretch for added flexibility and range of motion: Spandex is a synthetic fiber known for its exceptional elasticity and strength.  Spandex is the preferred name in North America; in many European countries it is referred to as "elastane", and is known in Britain mainly as Lycra.

Wash and Care:

  • Machine Wash
  • Vintage patina dyed and river washed
  • River washed for the “lived in” look.

Weather and Wind:

  • A stealth pocket lies behind the pant leg.  Only two closely-met seams reveal the opening.  Keep your smart phone in place without adding the silhouette of a pocket to the pant leg with this feature.

Sizing:

  • Sized generous

Pockets:

  • Reinforced pockets and bottom cuff reduces wear.
  • Cell phone pocket helps keep you organized

Features:

  • Double needle bar tacks at critical junctions for reinforcement
  • Gusseted crotch for those crux moves
  • Gusseted crotch for freedom of movement
  • Rugged yet luxurious—stylish enough for the office, tenacious enough for mountain pursuits
  • Athletikfit

Kuhl Rydr Pant Reviews:

Positive Reviews:

I'm an athletic 5 feet 10 inches, weighing 187 pounds. I normally fit in pants that have a 33 or 34 waist in order for the thigh area to fit comfortably while the waist remains somewhat loose. Upon trying these pants at an REI, I tried both the 32 and 34 inch waist and opted for the 34's. A week later, after trying it on at home several times, I decided to return them as the waist and overall fit seemed too large. As soon as I learned that Zappos had a 33 inch version, I ordered two pair. I washed them both and used low heat to dry them. They fit much better as they shrunk a bit but not enough to make them tight. I suspect had I dried them on high heat, they may (and still may) have shrunk even more, but again, not as much as you may think. So far, I'll say you can expect some shrinkage based on how warm the drying method is. But overall, a 33x32 fits me nearly perfect although the length is borderline too long (rather have too long than too short). Sorry about the long rant but felt the need to clarify the shrinking issues. The pants wear incredibly well with time and you'll notice their comfort, quality and ruggedness from the first time you wear them.

I have 2 pair of these. They are the only long pants that I wear. One pair the snap comes undone far too easily forcing me to wear a belt which I do not like to do. Maybe there is a way to fix them? I sent Kuhl a message. We'll see if they have an easy fix. Other than that I love them. The rise is right where I like it. Nowadays the rise on most pants is so big that the crotch is half way to my knees and I can't stand that. These fit me perfect in that regard. They have a pocket on the side of the leg that my cell phone slips into and stays put. The material is pretty soft yet tough. The "graphite" pair faded from wear and washing pretty quickly to a very light grey but they are now my work pants so that's cool. I haven't washed the brown pair enough to have them fade yet. Overall they are very nice pants. Oh yeah, in my experience with them at REI I had to try on lots of different ones to get a pair that fit in the waist and length. The size varied quite a bit on them.

I bought a pair of these over a year ago, and I wear them very frequently. The are fairly durable, though I have had the same issue as the review below me, though not as severe. About six or seven months into owning them I could see the fabric around the rivets at the rear pockets (same spot as the photo below) beginning to pull and fray. It hasn't created a hole... yet. I would like to see these resigned a bit to solve that issue, because, aside from that problem, these are easiy my favorite pants I've ever owned.
They do have a stiff, thick quality to them, and are relatively warm because of that... but they are very comfortable, and I frequently get compliments on them. The brown is a great color. It starts off a deep rich brown with a little red in it... and will fade over time into a light clay color.
All in all I love these pants, but for the price I'd expect the durability issue around the rear pockets to be solved.

Darn tough

I got these pants last Christmas. I loved them immediately. I'm very hard on the pants that I wear, and I work outside on the side of a mountain all summer. I put these pants through their paces and then some. I had only a few complaints: The pocket in back ripped where the above reviewer posted a picture of. I think putting my wallet in and out just stressed them out. They then ripped across the top in back where the belt area is. I just wore the threads down there. Sadly, the coup d'grace was then the crotch ripped. It started as a hole, but by the end it had torn all the way down to one knee. They were good pants, but I would have liked to see them last longer than 8 months. It should be noted that I was REALLY, REALLY tough on these pants. I would, and WILL buy them again.

perfect pants for your outdoor adventures. i got the espresso color

I was looking for a pant for mtn biking. I was shy at first given the price but these are now my favorite pants. The articulated knees are awesome! The fabric is durable and sharp looking. The patina is really cool. The black on these pants has started to fade from use and show brown through from the inside, making for a neat weathered look. The reinforced pockets are weird. The extra fabric makes it difficult to carry a pocket knife with a clip by far the biggest draw back for me. Otherwise the fit is great and comfy. These pants will hold up for a long time. Just don't let these get wet, they take a long time to dry but that is expected of a cotton pant.

My first pair of KUHL pants and I am surprised by just how much I'm liking them. The fabric and construction really are incredibly comfortable as of the first wearing, and of quality. From the reinforced pockets and hems, articulated construction, functional snap closure, inside pant description, it's clear that a lot of thought went into developing this product. I feel the sizing is accurate and highly recommend them.
I do have one small reservation/suggestion and am reluctant to bring it up because I really do like these pants, but I'm not into 'label's and would have preferred a little less branding. These are branded three times - the small front tab, back pocket embroidery and back belt loop logo. Otherwise, they are nearly perfect!

Good tough comfortable pants

You can tell Kuhl is doing something right!
These are my jeans replacement going forward.
The pants seem durable but with a supple feels to them. Although it will take a few (like about 10) washing cycles to get them to loosen up a bit.
Keep in mind that these are not slim cut by any means. They are a little loose but not too baggy either. I wear 38/30 jeans and these Kuhls fit a lot better but still have room in thigh area.
I have been using them for cool weather hiking and just around town.
The cell phone pocket is what brought the rating up to a 5.
Hey Kuhl....Make more colors!

I fell in love with these pants the minute I put them on and have only grown more fond of them with time. They fit like they were custom made and the weight of the mercerized cotton makes them super comfy all year round. The high-quality stitching, the attention to detail – like two layers of fabric at the cuffs and pocket hems and the brass rivets – shows that the brand's priorities are in the right place. The smart phone pocket along the right thigh is another ingenious design feature that I really miss in my other pants.
I can highly recommend these if you're looking for a comfortable, durable, great looking pair of pants.

My go-to jeans now. Kuhl does a great job of design and manufacturing. Re-enforced where they need to be, gussets on the knees.
The BEST feature is the little hidden pocket on the leg. The pocket doesn't show, but it fit my iPhone perfectly. Slide your phone in there and you can get to it on the plane, sitting, standing, laying down. No need for fumbling.
Ok, maybe iPhone compatibility isn't what Kuhl is going for, but who doesn't carry a phone and have to hassle with getting it our of their pocket?
These pants look very nice as well. Can't go wrong. Get a pair.

Such a clever way to spell cool....

These pants are the reason why I don't like wearing jeans anymore. I was originally put off by the high price of these but gave them a shot anyways. I love how strong the material is in these pants, plus I'm a fan of how much room is provided in the crotch and thigh area. The slit pocket in the side of these pants is perfect for holding my iPhone as well, it's a neat feature I feel they don't advertise. If you don't have a smart phone though you could put an ice cream sandwich in there I suppose.

Negative Reviews:

Nondurable and Overpriced

I purchased these pants one month ago. They fit true to size and have a nice cut, but I have issues with the fabric and dye. I purchased a 30" x 30", which fits good as long as I'm careful with the dryer setting, but I would have preferred a 31" x 30" which is not available. After wearing the pants 8 times and only 3 times in the washer, there is a gaping hole through the seat of the pants from the rivet in the left rear pocket. It is unacceptable for any pants costing [$] to fall apart so quickly, much less ones that are supposed to be designed for mountaineering. This material is not rugged or durable at all. I also noticed that when the pants came out of the washer, they had permanent light streaks where the dye washed out in areas that the material creased during the cycle. Again, after only 3 washes I have a pair of [$] pants with a huge hole and light streaks. I would not recommend these pants to anyone. While they are comfortable and fit great, they are not made from quality materials... and from my experience will not last. Luckily, I can return them for a refund.

I'm rather disappointed with these pants. While Kuhl makes a big fuss over being born in the mountains of Utah, these pants are made in China. The fabric is way to stiff. The cell phone pocket is too far back and ends up being under my leg when I sit down. The pants lost an inch in length after three washes. The Kuhl name just covers these pants, on all buttons, other fasteners, the front and back pockets. They should pay me as a walking billboard. I would not buy these pants again knowing what I know now.
Anonymous - customer at Zappos.com on 04/30/2010

Not the best...

Purchased this product as I own several other Kuhl items which I really like. In the store, these pants looked great! However, after one washing, they looked like I had washed them in a river between two rocks. Every place where the fabric was bent or twisted in the washer, the fabric took on a worn, whitish appearance. They DO NOT come from the dryer in a non-wrinkled state either. Basically, if you want to wear pants that look like you slept in them for a week, buy these. For [$], I would have expected far more.
